Iwata: DSiWare Not Meeting Expectations in Japan

Despite the DSi being a roaring sales success around the world, sadly it seems its download service is still struggling - at least over in Japan. Although there has already been plenty of new software released for the DSiWare service (such as the fantastic Art Style: Code, Pyoro and Paper Plane, as well as the quirky WarioWare: Snapped!), Nintendo's Satoru Iwata has confirmed that the company's expectations have yet to be reached:

"We had a certain expectation as to the number of Wi-Fi connections for the Nintendo DSi, but our expectations have not been met so far in Japan. On the other hand, in the U.S., a relatively high connection ratio has been reported from the start...

"We have to wrack our brains in order to come up with smart ways to deliver our messages effectively to a wide variety of different consumers. This thinking applies not only to the Nintendo DS but also to Wii...

"In the case of Nintendo platforms, (because the company has been challenging itself with several measures), net connection ratios have gradually been increasing as time goes by. We are making efforts with the hope that it will someday reach and go beyond the tipping point. The current situation, however, is that we are observing only a gradual increase."

With Square Enix confirming strong support for DSiWare, starting with the Intelligent Systems-developed Dragon Quest Wars, what else do you think can be done to rouse more interest in the service?

Its the main reason I havent bought one yet. Listening to the podcasts at IGN there really isnt anything worth connecting to the DSi ware store to purchase. Also they are selling a clock application for £2. A rigid price structure and not strong enough support.

When it comes to basic elements like DLC, harddrives, online gaming/purchasing even using DVDs to play games on. nintendo are the slowest most backward company. Its a shame for a such a forward thinking company to be so out of its depth in really tried and tested waters.

Probably because only CASUAAAAAALS bought the DSi.

Most people already have a DS or DSL, I'm not surprised that most gamers would rather stick with them even though the DSi has DSiWare. We just get left feeling cheated of our money. :/ So we not only don't want to buy a DSi... we're sore! SORE I TELL YOU.

One day I will be a real life anime.

Its weird. Im sure in some way the DSi is a response to the iphone.
But nintendo sometimes should do what Xbox do so well. Steal ideas. For nintendo this is easier to do. They already have the innovation of how to push new hardware and where to take gaming so they dont need to look at its competitors for this. But looking at models of what works with regards to online gaming, DLC and so on. They are so lost and behind.

You dont encourage all you inhouse dev to put out even simple 8bit fun games.

Your not advertising or sending out posts of new games that have appeared, so good titles get lost in a sea of crap

    Your pricing structure is crap

you always need proper good launch titles

Get with the program or dont bother.

Something to do with no quality games from Nintendo on DSi Ware perhaps?

VC for DSi! Play old favorites in their original form or updated. Like Mario Land.

Yeah, obviously to do with the lack of games.

Still, I'm happy with my DSoriginal....not sure why anyone should feel cheated because they released a better model though. Its not like the life of the DS has been cutshort due to a upgrade, its merely another version.
There will still be plenty of DS games, and its already one of the best supported systems ever.

I'd be happier if they put out more apps like the iphone. We know that's what Nintendo wants as that's what they were begging other developer's to help them achieve a little while back. Couldn't be too hard to make some of those apps minus the motion sensor ones. That would make me happy! Smilie

He's not gonna admit that so far, DSiWare sucks !

Mini Games sold around 3€ each certainly isn't the most appealing thing they've ever done. The PSP allows gamers to download PS1 games directtly to their handheld, and Nintendo comes up with a console that's only providing uninteresting shovelware targetted at casual gamers.

They deserve their low amount of connections IMHO.

They really need to start getting either smaller DS games uploaded or start getting the GameBoy Virtual console going.

Maybe some more intersting software using the camera, no more clock apps...

The only thing I've bought is Pyoro and that is just a mini-game taken from WarioWare. I've got another 800 points with nothing but puzzle games and crap to spend them on.

The best thing Nintendo can do is release Link's Awakening DX. Smilie

The only thing worth it on the DSi Store to download is the Opera Browser, which is free and still not even that great.
I only use it when absolutely no computer is available but I have a wireless signal around.
They need to work it more like the iPod Touch/iPhone apps and see how that works.
    [Which will be great, btw.]
That includes a majority for free but the ones that would cost could be better made games and not games that are pretty much demos.

I just released a fairly advanced music sequencer product on DSiWare called Rhythm Core Alpha. Hopefully that gives you more reason to get one now!
