A recent survey conducted by Nikkei has indicated the differences between PS3 and Wii owners in Japan (thanks to Andriasang for the translation). Clearly there are some stark differences between why people picked up a Wii over a PlayStation 3 and vice versa, but although some of the reasons may seem pretty obvious, the results of the survey are still quite interesting.
800 people were quizzed between 7th and 11th May, both men and women between the age of 10 and 40. The first task was to see who owned what system, and the results were as follows:
- Own a Wii - 28% (average age: 32)
- Own both Wii and PS3 - 5.6% (average age: 29)
- Own a PS3 - 4.3% (average age: 26)
Following on from this, it appears 40.2% of the Wii-only owners have been playing games for twenty years and over, whilst a comparatively small 23.5% of PS3-only owners had been playing for as long.
Other facts extracted from the survey include how 78.4% of the Wii owners stated they play mainly with other family members, whilst 46.5% they tend to play alone. For the PS3 owners, 77.5% played alone mainly, but 47.5% did put 'with their family' as a high choice, so clearly there is some overlap there. As for why the Wii was bought in the first place, 52.0% of the Wii owners said their choice was swayed by the fact the system had games they wanted to play on it, whilst 45.4% indicated they wanted to increase family interaction, 39% wanted to try new control methods and 37.5% simply wanted a healthier way of living and having fun.
81.3% of the PS3 owners went for the 'game they wanted' choice, 66.3% opted for the system because of its graphical power, whilst 52.5% said the inclusion of a Blu-ray player played a part in their purchase.

Hardly fits the casual/new gamer-only depiction most paint it with.
To me this implies a lot of older gamers on the Wii, and younger ones on the PS3.
Id like too see a servy of previous system owned, because I suspect PS2>>Wii got more converts then PS2>PS3.

It should hopefully give Nintendo the signal to start making more 'hardcore' (for want of a better word) games, when there are more seasoned gamers on Wii than PS3.
I'm praying for an exiting press conference.
It's interesting that the average age of a Wii owner is the highest too.
I shouldn't moan too much. At least we're getting Silent Hill, The conduit and Final Fantasy CC among others. I just need Nintendo to release a good 'proper' game

As once, as before, I still state that the 4-5 casual games they made for the Wii hasnt slowed down their normal game release's.
I remember people moaning about the same infrequently during the Cube and N64 days too, actualy
Nintendos sure to have a few core games this year, but they would have anyway. Just the way these things go, if anything, it would be the market 3 years ago effecting release's now

81.3 + 66.3 + 52.5 = 200.1%. Haha. Obviously, they took many factors into account.

Those factors aren't exclusive though. Someone may have bought a PS3 because of its graphical power AND the inclusion of Blu-ray.
