E309 Media | New Super Mario Bros Wii Announced on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo have announced New Super Mario Bros. for Wii, due out all over the world this holiday season.

The game is a 2D platform title which can be played alone or with up to three friends. The emphasis is certainly on co-operative play, with puzzles and sections that are far more fun to solve with a friend. It features all the typical 2D Mario elements such as coin blocks, warp-pipes and the like, but also chucks in some new ideas along the way.

Demoing the game on-stage at the conference, Nintendo showed how item blocks produce more than one mushroom to allow multiple players to power-up. New items include the 'propeller suit' which allows you to become a little human helicopter, drifting back down to earth, killing all in your path. You achieve this by simply shaking the Wii-mote. Classy stuff.

If a player dies (by falling off the back of the screen or getting killed or whatnot), they respawn in a bubble, which can be popped by others to release them back into the game. The whole demo had a very 'traditional' and retro feel; coin blocks, green hills, pipes and all that classic Mario goodness.

At the end of each level is the infamous flagpole, which all players have a couple of seconds to reach once the first player makes contact. As the level ends, all coins and points are added up to bring a really nice competitive edge to the co-operative play as you're ranked on how well you did. Exciting times.

This looks great, but I'm not sure why it's on Wii. Would probably work better on DS.

That's just because you're used to it. I think it could be a lot of fun, and it is the best thing apart from a new galaxy which obviously wasn't coming. Great start for a nintendo conference so far Smilie

But Super Mario Galaxy 2 was announced. Didn't see it coming, I have to admit.

true, lol that's what I meant. It was unrealistic but it's here. in my opinion, quite a good start to e3!

I was really hoping for a New Super Mario Bros. 2 based on Super Mario Bros. 2, but this isn't bad. I'll take all the Mario platforming I can get.

Awesome - wasn't a major fan of the SNES Marios, but really enjoyed the DS New SMB! This is looking good, and awesome news on the ol' co-op!

Really wish they would make a new super mario world like the snes version. That was 2d mario at its best. Plus the sprite work looks better then this 2.5d incarnation.

This needs to be online.

Looks cool, I'm not sure if i'll buy it/get it for xmas, but still, looks solid. Hopefully it won't be as easy as NSMBDS.

I hope there is some team based puzzles thrown in like in Zelda 4 swords, would be a bit crap if it's just you and a friend acting like spastics as you progress through the level.

Yes, this really needs co-op specific landscapes to work.

I am certain I will buy this game, because it oozes platforming love and looks like an insane amount of fun, playing with advanced and rookie players alike.

Yep, I'll buy it. It should very well be online, that would sooo be the best thing yet.

Looks so awesome and the co op seems like it's gonna work really well. Can't wait to throw superlink round the screen Smilie

Okay, I\'m a little slow on the uptake sometimes Smilie. I agree that it is a great start for Nintendo at E3.

I was hoping for one in the style of SMB 3 for the NES. Still love that Racoon Tail.

I'm happy with all these new games and such..but both Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are just their original games with different levels.
Then came this heartrate thingy.
And that was pretty much it.
This E3 was MUCH better than last year.
But Microsoft's visual bar thing pretty much OWNED Nintendo's ideas.
It seems that Microsoft is the only one taking E3 by a real storm.
The bar thingy is epic.
Nintendo could do the same thing but better and hit the casual crowd they want even more if they started thinking and innovating again.
That demo of the bar Microsoft had was OBVIOUSLY directed at the casual crowd.
Nintendo seems to be losing pace with their ideas.

You forgot Golden Sun DS. Thats a HUGE game for some of us, (myself included). A Lot of people are also interested in Sin and Punishment 2 as well. And that Metroid title sparked significate interest too, so you kinda forgot a lot there Smilie

And I wouldnt discribe NSB as merely a new level pack when its on a different platform, different levels, assets AND its multiplayer.

Galaxy2 being effectively a level pack, I would agree with, however.

Yes, but unlike the Wiimote they have yet to show it work well with traditional games too.

They really need something like a wireless nunchuck for charecter motion.
The Wii+Nunchuck is great because its good for pretty much any genre (save fighting).

At the moment, ironicaly, I can see Microsofts thing being best at fighting games, but not much else.
(I dont buy the \"pretend your holding a stearing wheel\" concept....that would just feel wrong)

Nintendo could do the same thing but better

But why should they?
Maybe Microsofts idea will prove great, maybe it wont.
But it would be foolish and silly for Nintendo to do a nee-jerk copy now. Especialy with MotionPlus is getting some very good feedback.

Nintendos taken one phlopshy of design, Microsoft another.
It remains to be seen which is more usefull, but the choice in the market is good for gamers.

Unfortunately, at his round-table event, Miyamoto confirmed that this game isn't online.

Per IGN's live blog:

If this has as good a Single Player mode as NSMB DS, then I'm sold. Smilie

I agree that NSMBDS was easy but Nintendo probably planned the difficulty to be quite a low level so it was ''pick up and playable'' for a wider target audience range. Definitely needs to move away from the 8 worlds rule, why not more....LOADS more?!?!?!?
