E309 | Metroid: Other M is Not Dread on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Long running Metroid director Yoshio Sakamoto has confirmed that the latest Metroid game, Other M, is not the rumoured Dread.

Since around 2006 a 2D Metroid Project has been strongly hinted at, through Easter eggs in Metroid Prime 3 and suggestions in developer/PR interviews.

With the Team Ninja Metroid collaboration sprouting 2D-inspired sections, fans have wondered if Dread has turned out to become Other M. However Sakamoto has said that they day may come where Metroid Dread does hit stores, but this new Wii game is something completely different.

He's very familiar with that [game]...No, this is different.

The day may come when Dread hits the stores, but this one is something that's completely different. This is other M.

Of course they denied that the stuff in MP3 were easter eggs. Said it was coincidence.

Wait so he means that Dread may really exist, right ?

Pretty sure that was Retro, who probably have nothing to do with Other M or Dread.

He obviously knows about the rumours, but even if it never was real then maybe he knows the rumour's popularity? A new 2D Metroid is still possible it seems.

I dunno, I don\'t see what\'s disappointing about it. At the same time I am skeptical as to how the gameplay will work.

The series developer hasn\'t worked on a new Metroid since Fusion, and he\'s always wanted to do a Wii game, so he hopes this will have the feel of the 2D titles.

\"Experiment status report update: Metroid project \'Dread\' is nearing the final stages of completion.\"
- Prime3.

Not a co-incidence in my book. Too unlikely.
Probably a canceled GBA game or something. In developed too long, missed the boat completely, and Nintendo dosnt want to own upto it.

Retro have nothing to do with the 2D Metroids, and they said so themselves that it was only a nod to the fans, nothing else.
