    Activision May Ditch Sony Support

Activision's CEO Bobby Kotick has warned Sony that it might have to offer support for the entire PlayStation range.

Kotick has voiced concerns about the electronics giant's performance in recent times. Activision feels the PS3 is "losing a bit of momentum" and this might make developing for the console a tad difficult and that "games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation".

He urges Sony to cut the price of the BluRay powerhouse - if the attach rates for the PS3 continue to slow then Activision may have to stop supporting the console.

When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP too.

I think the PS3 is actually gaining momentum....

As for PSP support, why drop it? The PSP is awesome and cheap =_=

Sony now must face their ultimate decision: Blame the consumer even more or blame the developing community. Twats.

Sounds like a weak attempt at persuading Sony to drop the PS3 price to me. In which case I support this. Smilie

Gotta say, funny how this draws similar parallels with a certain Cuboid Console from last gen. Smilie

How is this Nintendo news? Have we fallen so low that we have to make fun at the competition?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's interesting. But it's not really Nintendo-related. I'll read about this on Eurogamer or so...

I think this topic is Nintendo-related. I don't know if you've noticed this, but these 3 consoles are in competition with each other and whatever happens to one will have an effect(affect?)on the other.

Its like if Rareware said something like that to Microsoft. This is news thats "fit to type"?

And there are lots of people who own more than one console.

How is this article making fun of Nintendo Sony? It\'s just reporting news. Not even the comments are making fun.

I like when news bits about the other consoles are reported here. I don\'t read other gaming news sites and its good to keep up on what the competition is doing.

EDIT: As Crocomire pointed out to me, I meant to say \"How is this making fun of Sony\" and not Nintendo.

I think it's related because it's industry news, and if Activision cut down on Sony development it could be a good thing for Nintendo systems.

Also, I don't go on other game sites either Smilie C3 is the only good one on the whole internet Smilie

Certainly this would be good for Nintendo is it happened.
The industary has infinite resources, dump spending on one platform, and it would increase elsewhere.

But, that said, this comment is almost certainly a tactical remark to prod Sony into doing a better job.

Sony will no dought come back with their normal

Making fun of the competition would mean making fun of Sony/Microsoft -- that's what he meant.

The game is called Guitar Hero. And its a pretty huge deal if Activision cuts Sony out of the loop on that.

That is completely irrelevant, Guitar Hero (and Modern Warfare as Simez mentioned) are some of the biggest (if not the biggest) franchises of this generation. Losing them is a major blow to Sony.

Again, whether you like the franchises or not is irrelevant. To have one of the largest third parties in the world say they're considering no longer releasing their titles on the PS3 is no laughing matter; its a big deal.

Simez, Jump - quit being such PS3 fanboys. Activision make good games, and they happen to also make a few excellent ones.

Anyway, at the moment it's just a threat. They haven't actually done anything in the way of pulling out from developing for Sony platforms, and the PS3 is probably due for a price drop sometime soon. This is just one more reason for Sony to drop the price, and I totally see them doing it for this Christmas. The PS3 isn't the pathetic console it once was, and now's the time for Sony to really hit Microsoft with a price cut. Stop 'playing catch-up', and really move in for the kill, so to speak.

Where's the fun making? The news I reported as factual as possible, and it is Nintendo related given Activision are finding it easier and more cost effective to work on X360/Wii.

There's no Sony "bashing" here, and the comments are fair imo. It is relevant as Activision are finding X360 and Wii development cheaper and gaining the most returns.

Leads you to ask the question - did Nintendo's cheaper development approach work out, especially for third parties in the current economic climate.

It would be an indescribably huge loss to Sony should AB pull support. Let's recap on the biggest selling games coming from this company:

---Call of Duty/ Modern Warfare- undoubtedly the most popular FPS series out there. Losing these two franchises on any console is a major turn down to the owners of said console who were hoping to buy this. Losing this will give Microsoft an even bigger edge in the online scene seeing as how CoD4:MW/CoD5:WaW are really popular online

---Guitar Hero: While not the first of its kind, this is THE series that brought the music-game genre to the masses. Sure, the genre has quickly grown stale after a short amount of time- what with the yearly releases of new entries. Despite that, this is a franchise that can always pull an ace out of their sleeves to surprise the gaming industry. Losing this franchise will also be a major turn off to PS3 owners, since losing this franchise will also mean losing any new DLC for any entries already on the PS3.

---World of Warrcaft/Diablo/Starcraft: While these are primarily only on the PC, Microsoft has already been trying to secure a deal with Blizzard to bring WoW to the 360. Let that sink in, an MMORPG that has over 11 million users, potentially heading to home consoles. Not only that, but Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2 are being eagerly awaited by legions of fans. Losing Activision also means losing Blizzard, thus losing these three mega franchises.

I agree that the PS3 has been in a decline since its launch, and Sony better realize this, and do something about it, before it's too late.
I don't post much, but I will appreciate any feedback on the posts I do make. Feel free to PM Smilie

I doubt Activision would drop PS3 support. Their games sell very well on the PS3. They might not do as well as they do on the 360 but they definately make a profit on the console. This is just their way of pressuring Sony for a price drop. Tis just a bluff.

Could be, but if you're honest you have to admit that you don't really know any of that. Activision games may very well not sell enough on PS3 to make a profit - or only make a really tiny profit or something. Who knows? He didn't make this threat for no reason, and to make it publicly as well...

You're right, the article wasn't unfair.

But since this is a Nintendo site, you could at least have shown the relation to Nintendo.

Something like "The PS3 has not been able to keep up with the Wii. One possibility for this is the high development costs for PS3 games, in contrast with the low costs for making Wii games."

Without that link with Nintendo, it could be interpreted in any way...
