No Additional Characters for Super Mario Bros Wii on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

More Nintendo Power tidbits have highlighted a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto - there won't be more playable characters in New SMB Wii.

Revealed at E3, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was hailed as one of the company's better announcements, blending co-op play for up to 4 players to the classic side-scrolling Mario formula. The trailer and gameplay snippets showed Mario, Luigi, Toad and another Toad jump their way to victory however didn't show any others.

Wario? Luigi? Peach and Daisy or a whole host of other much loved Mario Land folk? Miyamoto's answer to your burning desire to partner up with the king of farts: no.

When asked about the playable characters being Mario, Luigi, Toad and Another Toad, Shigeru Miyamoto says "That's it."

That said - he might, might, be referring to what's been officially announced, but don't prepare for shades of purple and yellow just yet.

Thanks to Infendo.

Damnit!! I want Wario, Waluigi, DK, Diddy, Peach, & Daisy as playable characters... Smilie

Chance favors the prepared mind.

I think that's crazy. What happened to Nintendo talking about how it used to take polls of gamers' favourite characters? I very much doubt people like playing as random Toads...Bring in Waluigi Smilie

Yeah... this is stupid. Two characters in a multiplayer game being recolours of a character you can't even play as? Just pethetic really... >.<

well it not be that hard to do

Wario/Waluigi would have made things so much different, DK as well - come on Nintendo!

Nah seems pretty obvious they were too lazy to more more than two new character models.

"Hmm, how can we have 4 player characters, and rideable Yoshi?"
"Yoshis we can recolour, Mario and Luigi can have reused DS models and... we can recolour Toad! We won't even put the original Toad in, because I hate him!"
"You're a genius, now we can have an E3 demo ready for E3 next week!"
"Better start making it *puts DS cart in Wii*."

understandable. the goal is to save the princess, if she was on the team, wtf is the point, and also, wario, although appears in alot of mario games like gold, tennis or kart, has never been a real character for the vagely relivant mario series, hes always been more his own franchise who makes apperences here and there. DK and diddy the same thing, own franchise, this is more more "marioy" game than others. it makes sense, though i would rather something other than 2 toads too, even if just 1 toad and make a new character all together. still, i understand why and like their keeping it old schoolish. Daisy would of worked though, make a character select screen like mario bros 2 with daisy as peach, sense the goal is to actually save peach.

If Peach is a secret character then that's not really a problem.

As for Wario, Mario 64 DS?

Of course there could be more. He could have meant "That's it" by the characters you choose in the begging.

Maybe he didn't want to spoil the surprise...or maybe..charge you Wii points to play as different ones SmilieSmilieSmilie

I was going to insert a "Print money" joke in there, but it was really corny. If you guys want to go on ahead Smilie

And maybe we shouldn't take everything this guy says seriously...I mean yeah he could bend the truth a little.

Even with the character selection the game looks like alotta fun! I can't wait to play it with my friends. It does look like this could be on the DS though lol

I would flip a sh*t if that happened. Smilie

The former top user was Keven! You'd probably give birth to yourself 1000 times over until you sprout wings to fly away into the fading sun, that or you'd just turn into a lesbian. Who knows @_@ - L, 12/06/09

The reported 80 levels is MASSIVELY, insanely and monumentaly more work then adding two more sets of character sprites.

No, its not lazyness, its something else here weirder.

I would be very surprised if they did not add in a character other than a recoloured Toad - i.e. Wario, Waluigi, DK, even Daisy! Who cares who rescues the Princess in the end, but a second Toad just screams "laziness" and "wtf?".

I simply wouldn't understand Nintendo's idea behind this if that is how the final game ends up. What is the problem behind adding another character instead of a second Toad?

I like the names (a visitor of) IGN gave the toads: Yvan and Wolley. It's yellow and navy backwards. Smilie

Most Mario Bros games have around that number of levels anyway =_=

I don care...even if they only had toads to play as the game will play the same, it's just a platformer. I'm gettin it regardless....probably yeah.

Most "new" platformers would get more effort than just new levels, new levels are a GIVEN, but hardly any new character models either? Seems pretty lazy to me.
