Hints Mode In Wii/DS Games From Autumn on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Previously revealed as a feature of New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Nintendo will be rolling out their auto-playing hint mode in games from Autumn - and that includes DS as well as Wii, so you'll be able to get help with nasty bits in games even when you're on the move, too.

The mode, reported by Nikkei to be called 'Skip Functionality', allows players to pause their game and select an option that will play through sections for them if they're finding it a bit too tough. Or if they want to have their breakfast, or something. Presumably you'll be able to jump back into play whenever you want.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the first to use the mode, but apparently more select games will be using it in the future on both Nintendo's home and portable formats. It is said that action games will likely be targeted most by this feature. The purpose is to stop people getting frustrated and quitting games, so that everybody can get the full experience of titles.

Thanks to Nikkei via AndriaSang.

Have your opinions changed much on the Demo Play function since our last news on it?

I've been stuck a few times in Zelda games, mostly because it takes me many years to complete games. I remember being stuck in the City in the Sky in Twilight Princess for half a year because I forgot that Wolf Link could walk on ropes. I can still play that dungeon in my sleep because I explored it so thoroughly.

I know a lot of people are complaining about this function, but I think it's a good way to get casual player to play more hardcore titles. I imagine that a lot of casual players don't play hardcore titles because they are too hard, or they quit at a tough spot. This should be a good way to reel in Wii Sports Zombies.

If someone can't play it, they lack some sort of skill.
Games are not that hard to play and when they are hard to play, people should be given the opportunity to develop those puzzle solving and/or hand-eye coordination abilities.
It's enabling people to just stay on level one through an entire game and pretty much missing the thing that makes a game.
Which most of the time, is a challenge.
Nintendo, don't make humans dumb even in video games.
:/

I think its a fantastic idea, and theres no cause for any complaints at all, really.

Its incredibly hard to balance game difficulty for all players, this makes that how process easier as you dont have to worry about every player getting past every last bit.

Nintendo just need to learn how to implement difficulty settings. Smilie Give the gamers a hard mode in Mario and Zelda and leave the easy stuff for those that want it that way.

Smilie

I like the idea myself...it is only another option, afterall.

This feature is for people who are stuck and don't know where to go or how to solve a puzzle, not for people who can't beat a boss or whatever.

I also believe that games can appeal to a wide audience without relying on difficulty levels, especially when it just changes damage given/taken. From my experience, that does not make the game any more fun. Some games need difficulty levels, such as fighting or FPS games, but Mario and Zelda do not.

For Zelda, the bosses and enemies should be made harder with better AI, but allow less skilled players to use potions and stuff like that.

It\'s being used In New Super Mario Bros. Wii for those who can\'t beat a level. If there was an easy mode, then they might be able to beat it.

If there was an easy mode, they might then be able to beat a boss, solve a puzzle or complete a level.

I\'m not saying this isn\'t a good idea, only that Nintendo can satisfy those who want a tougher challenge or easier game by including difficulty settings.

The old schooler in me doesn't like it. "What is this? Hand holding for video games now? This is sad, sorry and just plain pathetic!"

The sensible guy in me thinks that its good for people like my grandma and my ma who are interested in the games, but don't have that veteran experience that most of us (on this forum) do.

Think about it. Who is this for? For veterans like us who play games often and have been for a very long time?
Or for people who have just found an interest in something that their son has been playing his entire life? They want to share, to be apart of something that their loved ones have been doing for a long time.

I think we can use common sense here Smilie
And if you haven't figured it out by now, I'm siding with my sensible side Smilie

Diablo II
"I'll make weapons from your bones!" - The Smith Paladin: I will cleanse this wilderness. Deckard Cain: Stay a while and listen!

This will be useful for me as i never always manage to finish story mode in games

It's a good option. If you don't like it, don't use it.
