Review-Off: Virtua Tennis 2009 VS Grand Slam Tennis on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Both SEGA and EA appeared to see the stars align with the introduction of Wii's MotionPlus around the time of Wimbledon, and so opted to support it out of the gate with tennis titles. Which is the most successful, though? Now there's a tricky question...

On one side of Centre Court we have SEGA's Virtua Tennis 2009. It's backed by a legion of fans loyal to the long-standing series and is famed for its arcade roots. On the other side we're got the unseeded newcomer, EA's Grand Slam Tennis. Taking a stylised approach, it's an outsider to win, but has the mighty EA Sports label behind it. Is there going to be an upset?

There's only one way to find out. Below are links to the two reviews. It seemed only right to have both games taken on by one person, and that person was James Temperton, resident features editor and sometimes tennis player. Read on, then, for Cubed3's verdict on two of the big openers for MotionPlus.

I was going to pick up Virtua Tennis but the game wasnt in stock so got Grand Slam instead. So far I am not impressed with the motion plus. The thing comes unpresonsive at time and some time even the slightest movement with the controller your player starts spazzing out before hitting the ball.

Trust me when I say Wii Sports Resort has no such issue...I'm loving every mode I play on the game! Smilie

MotionPlus for GST was decent enough and far better than how it was used in VT2009. If the character starts juddering around (happened to Mason when I was playing against him), the controller simply needs to be recalibrated. Also, we both found that smooth movements work better, with Wii Sports Tennis sharp flicks messing up the calibration...

One question Jesusraz, is Wii sports tennis in the Wii sports resort?

Nope, it's Table Tennis instead - and damn is it addictive! Smilie I'm really enjoying the Wakeboarding and Jet Ski games as well - makes me wish for a proper Wave Race sequel.

Ah shame to hear both aren't as good as expected, especially Virtua Tennis. Might hold off for the eventual sequel to either where they would have had more time with MotionPlus to refine it a bit.
