Ashes 09 set for Nintendo Wii on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The Ashes is now in full swing and riding off the back of it like a money-grabbing limpet is the official game of the series, Ashes Cricket 2009. The Wii version, developed by Gusto Games, is out on August 7th 2009.

The game features all the players, all the stadia and lets you play through the whole test series, one day internationals or 20Twenty games. Whilst the XBOX 360 and PS3 versions will feature online modes and HD whatnots, the Wii version will feature...waggling! Or, as the press release puts it:

The Wii edition will have players using the Wii Remote to perform batting and bowling motions in single player or local multiplayer games.

Hopefully good news for Wii-owning cricket fans. We'll try and bring you a review before the release. Until then, there's a bit more info and some screens and a video (though not for the Wii version) over at the official website, www.playashes.com.

Without motion plus, I dont see this working that well.
Unlike baseball, the yaw of the bat would make quite a difference to the shot. (in baseball, the bat is a cylinder, so its less of an issue)

In principle though, motion controll cricket would be great. It just depends how well they cna interpret the wiimotes data.

Time to smash the POMS virtual cricket style, sounds enticing

I'm crossing my fingers it turns out okay, about time there was a decent cricket game...on any console.

Trying to think of a witty signature after 'Hacker-gate'...

Its is actually guaranteed to be crap. How could this work without motion plus. It just cant. You need to know at what angle the bat makes contact with the ball and the regular wii mote cant cope. Bowling will also be a hideous mess with just motion control. Thank god Im not into cricket waiting for a good cricket game or I would be screwed

Hitting, yes, certainly.
But I dont see how bowling would be any worse then any other cricket game ever made.
Even what WiiBaseball did was better then the normal systems done in games. (which are mostly digital based with no analogue speed sensitivity)

Speed input is something that has been little explored with motion control so far. Even in grand slam tennis there seems a very limited input to read (thanks to the devs). I cant see the standard wii remote interpretting a wide range of speed. Infact we know it cant. So it doesnt have an advantage over digital input. Will probably have to used the d pad for different spins. It will be another example of motion control for the sake of it.

WiiBaseball can sense rough speed, I dont see why this would be different. Theres also some effect for spinning left and right as you get near the end.
(a bit like spinning in bowling, actualy)

It is only rough speed,of course. Its not physicaly accurate. But then, most cricket games dont have speed settings at all, so I'm just saying its not going to actualy be worse. (or shouldnt be)

Infact we know it cant.

Not quite.
Its accelerometers can sense magnatude of speed ok, but they are fairly useless at seperating out the direction of the speed.
As far as the wiimote is concerned, it cant actualy tell the difference between certain types of rotation, and certain types of displacement. It can only make guess's about which is happening.

Between this and Tour De France on XBLA developers are really churning out the "sports games 90% of the world doesn't give two shits about" this summer. Smilie
