Iwata: Everyone Should Own a DS

After disappointing hardware sales during Q1 2009, Nintendo's Satoru Iwata is hoping to remarket the DS as more of a personal device.

According to Techradar, Iwata is hoping to market the DS as more of a personal device, one for each person, instead of one or two shared between members of a family.

The company's Japanese division has noticed improved sales near outlets, like McDonalds, offering free wireless internet and download play services for free game demos.

What do you think Nintendo needs to do to improve hardware sales for both the Wii and DS?

For once I agree with him. The more people own a DS the more games it'll get, and then it'll prolly take over the PS2 for the "best console with most awesome games" award.

Heart Gold and Soul Silver are on the way!

Going by this, I presume they are going to give DS users the ability to customise their DS\'s giving each DS their own identity i.e Mii\'s in DSi format? The clocks on the DSi were a start (but I wouldn\'t pay for one lol) but they should totally change the home menu for the DSi is looks like shitty homebrew or something, and then give us options to customise the menu.

Personal device? What does it do really well beyonds games? Internet experience isnt that strong. Apps are still underwhelming. I heard you have to pay for a clock app. DSi ware games are few and far between. I cant see everyone in a household purchasing one. Its the perfect sharing device.

Yeah, DSiWare is a great opportunity to offer ways to personalise the DS, and perhaps offer some free PDA-ish apps, basic text editors/readers, calendar etc would be nice. The photo thing is a great start. Without mp3 support, the music player is pretty much useless though. I think it's stuff like that which will persuade those that don't already have one.

The DS already is, like, the best console ever.
It has the selection of games/support the PS2 did AND it has a few quality Nintendo titles AND its portable.

    Seriously, best console ever.
Especialy if you factor in some excelent homebrew. (Puzzlemanik, for example).

I wish the DSi would get more/better downloadable apps. If it was more like the iphone, I'd never put it down.

Can Iwata buy me a DS Lite then? I really would like one of those. I think the DSi is a good handheld, but its just not worth the extra $$$ for me.

What do you think Nintendo needs to do to improve hardware sales for both the Wii and DS?

7 words. Black Wii Smilie Also the wii in other different colors including Franchise-themed wiis and customizable wiis. Nintendo is probably saving that for later though. I don\'t know why. Everyone and their grandma has one of those things.

I have the same advice for the DS I guess. Even more colors.

Nintendo should look for an audience that they haven\'t been too much in contact with in terms of sales. They know who that audience is that they\'ve been neglecting. If they reach out to this audience then sales should go up. That audience is the hard-core audience. It\'s a no-brainer. Nintendo probably knows this already.

They also need ads for said hardcore games and step-up their online network. Online gaming isn\'t going anywhere and the sooner they embrace it the better.

EDIT: The conduit is a nice start. Also the games that Sega put out for the wii is good too. They should try the same thing for the DS.

This stance is such a world away from their previous attitude of being only about the games.

I'd say all this success has gone to their head. Good times are over and have been for a while now.

I could see this working if Nintendo opened up the tech a little more and vastly improved the internet capabilities.

They need to release good games, and possibly improve the system\'s Internet and download-related capabilities. They\'re never going to win if they try to market it as a multimedia device, because their competitors are simply in a better position in that regard - both Sony and Microsoft are offshoots of multimedia CORPORATIONS, of COURSE they are going to be in an inherently better position to put multimedia into their devices. Nintendo should come back around to focusing on what they\'ve always done, with the simplicity which has always appealed to me: making GAMES, for people who want to PLAY them. The better they can make games and create an enjoyable and expansive interface within which people can enjoy them, the better off they\'ll be. They might want to pay attention to some of the GAME-RELATED innovations of this generation that they\'ve missed, most notably online networking and systems such as Xbox Live. That is really the critical area in which they are most deficient this generation.

A slight correction to Teetrab: Online gaming isn\'t going anywhere but UP.

I completely agree with you Gatotsu. That's what I meant when I said that online gaming isn't going anywhere. I meant that it was something that I felt that Nintendo was neglecting and they needed to improve in that department. I was sort of making it like an elephant in the room where Nintendo didn't want to face it.
