Nintendo Makes Wii Internet Browser Free

From today, anyone can now access the Wii Internet Channel for free, allowing many more households to get online via their Wii.

By connecting Wii to the internet, you are opening your living room up to a world of possibilities! The Wii-specialised web browser enables people to connect wirelessly to the internet to surf the internet, do their internet shopping and even watch online catch-up TV services via their console. The fast-booting internet browser will create a new relationship between the family, the TV, and the internet. This Channel uses the full internet browser from Opera Software, which also supports Adobe Flash.

Surfing the web with the Wii Remote is simple for the whole family. It lets you zoom in on areas of interest with ease and browse your favourite websites at leisure. The Wii Internet Channel previously required 500 Wii Points. For those Wii owners who have already spent 500 Wii Points on the Wii Internet Channel, Nintendo will be offering a NES title from Virtual Console worth 500 Wii Points and will be launched in late October.

Further details on how to get the channel will be announced on the Wii Message Board and on the Nintendo website.

This is good news, but it should have been free originally, in my opinion.

A free NES game for those who paid 500 for it? I got it free but my dad paid the price. Smilie Maybe I can use his free NES download and send it to my Wii as a gift? Smilie

I had the original for free, but this is meant to be an updated version. When I tried it just now, I couldn't tell the difference though. Smilie

People that got it free at the wii launch also got the update for free, from what I remember.

Still, free is good. Opera did a great job on the browser, I just wish Nintendo used it a little better. (like letting you cache pages, and have them automaticaly updated using WiiConnect24).

In theory Wii internet could let you have =instant= access to those webpages.

I got it free already from when it was free anyway... but, offering a free game for those who spent the points? leaves me a little confused and curious to why nintendo charged for internet channel in the first place only to loose their "profit".

It probably has something to do with the fact that the DSi Browser is free. Makes the pricing of the Wii browser seem a little ridiculous when a handheld gets quite a nice browser for absolutely free.

Now if only Nintendo sorted out the whole Nintendo Points rip off, as well as the ridiculous Wii Prices themselves. Smilie

They're not losing profit. Unless all those people were going to download that NES game anyway, which is unlikely.

I never got it, never will.

On a slightly related note, I wish Nintendo would have given every new Wii user a couple of free points. Enough for a NES or SNES game. That might have gotten me started on the whole VC business, so it would have been good for Nintendo too.

On Joystiq, they're saying that the Flash has been updated from Flash 7 to Flash Lite 3.1.

They also say that (in Japan starting Oct 21st) if you help 10 people connect their Wiis online, you get access to all Nintendo-published Famicom games for free. If you help 20 people, then you get access to ALL virtual console games for free. Again, I think this is Japan only.

Nintendo have always been generous towards Japanese people. Smilie

I\'m not sure if they gain access to all VC games or just all of the Nintendo-published ones.

Thank goodness - at least they're getting somewhere with this whole Nintendo internet setup.

Really should have stayed free though, just looks a little strange, but fortunately they're realised it really shouldn't have been charged.

On a side note Nintendo points really should have been bridged between DS and Wii. One account, one set of points, games collection etc.

    Jees, even C3 does that!Smilie

Giving away all Nintendo NES games if you get 10 new people online...

Both aspects are pretty unbelievable. Smilie Where do I find 10 people with an offline Wii?

I paid for the internet channel. Pretty cool to see a reimbursement. Very nice, on Nintendo's part.
