Report: Wii Most Reliable, Least Played on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

An independent report from warranty provider SquareTrade has found only 2.7% of Wii owners report a system failure.

The study was conducted by the independent provider, finding that the Wii is the most reliable console out of the big three, with 10% of PS3 owners suffering problems and 23.7% of Xbox 360 owners reporting a system failure. 11.7% noted issues other than the much feared "Red Ring of Death".

In a 24 hour period, figures suggested there was a 1.35% chance of failure, 0.50% for the PS3 and 0.31% for Wii users. Many of these issues were disc reading, output and Wii remote problems.

Whilst the Wii had strong reliability figures, it came 3rd place when look at usage figures over a period of 24 months. On average, owners used the PS3 for 19.9 days, 17.6 days for Xbox 360 and a mere 8.6 days for Nintendo's Wii.

Mines been been alright most of the time, but occasionally it doesn't read the disc.

The Wii is an annoying console. Mine crashes while loading various Channels (especially the Wii Shop Channel) very often. Also have had a few disc reading errors.

Ive only ever had my Wii crash a couple of times but never break down. I believe it crashed once during Brawl, otherwise i have found a few cube games that have crashed with it. Although only a couple of times, my 360 has crashed more.

The fact that i have had my Wii longer (albeit by 4days) and im still on my 1st Wii as oppose to my 4th Xbox 360 it says it all. I take care of my consoles and games as i do with any other product i own, i have never seen such a product fail and i refuse to trust Microsofts reliabilty in the home console market let alone their ability to be able to produce the Xbox 360 with very well known technical faults. A 3 year warranty is just enough. Products should be lasting a lot longer than 3 years if you are potentially paying hundreads of pounds for it!

My Playstation 3 has never broken down in the past couple of months since ive owned it. Neither has my Nintendo DS (Lite and Phat when i owned then) GBA, GB Micro, Nintendo Gamecube, N64, Sony Playstation or SEGA Master System.

I had a few issues with my Dreamcast but it was pre-owned when i had bought it.

In terms of clock time or most played then my Xbox shits on my Wii probably taking 65% of my play time, Nintendo Wii 25% and my GBmicro and PS3 making up the rest of the 10%

N64 used to and still is pretty dodgy for the old "dust" problem, but still works regardless.

Nintendo's always been incredibly reliable for me hardware wise though the Wii did get buggered up back in January. However we really didn't look after it so well, was in a shared place, people falling over it (can you believe?!), controller drags and a whole load of dust.

Fortunately Nintendo were able to sort the problem for me (pulling a few strings!).

Very rarely get disc errors - before and after the repair, definitely a reliable machine. Once saw a video of a GameCube being whacked with an axe or something - to where it was hanging half out of its shell and it still worked!

Brother's 360 seems to have held up (he's had it over a year now), has not booted up for a few days at a time though - no red ring, just stopped functioning - done that for a few days at least 3/4 times now. Infact I don't think he's physically touched the console (i.e. turned it on or tweaked the cables) since last year!

I've had to send TWO Wii's to Nintendo due to the GPU frying. Smilie

I've had some minor issues, like the remote not responding until I hard-reset the Wii. Also my disc driver makes a terrible noise, is that normal? I think it started with one of the patches...

I have more than double the amount of Wii games than 360 so I've spent much more time on it. Plus I've had a Wii for over a year longer than a 360.

My 360 got the red ring less than a year of purchase but thankfully was fixed and sent back to me in just less than a week.

My Wii has frozen loads of times. Mainly when I try to boot up a game, the shop channel or the Internet channel. Very annoying. Can't be arsed to get it fixed. My dad's WiiSensorBar has problems picking up his WiiRemote. He can't be sat more than 8 foot away.

My brother's PS3 froze on me last night. I wanted to rewind about 20 steps on LittlebigPlanet's level editor and it froze during a rewind. Smilie

Sent my Wii for a clean about a year ago, that's about it.

I've had my Wii since launch., and I've never had a problem with it, and i play it quite alot being my only home console at the moment. Only seen problems with certain games like sonic unleashed (werewolf levels sometimes leave what look like sparkling stuck pixels) or the conduit (online thing in which you get spawned in a wall). Infact, i'm using my Wii right now with the sensor bar neing annoying in the sunlight.

My Wii\'s frozen a couple times, mostly on the Web browser, but that\'s about it. The only time I had to send it in to Nintendo was to get it fixed so that it could play dual-layer discs (i.e. Super Smash Bros. Brawl). But all in all it\'s been very reliable in the 2+ years I\'ve had it.

Never had a problem exsept Batty problems but that's my fault :O though there is to much Nunchuck Sensitivity in my Wii games (other then Conduit cuz that's a major problem Smilie )

My wii just shuts downa all of a sudden thats some bullcrap:-x

I had to send mine in to Nintendo.
In its defense, this was most likely because of my mom's smoking (I used the official lens head cleaner, all FIVE pads, and they all came out completely yellow.)
Also, I have a hunch that one of my siblings dropped it and never told me, because one day it just suddenly couldn't read discs anymore, and when I listened, it sounded like the lens wasn't moving up and down like it's supposed to.
But, the fix was fast. I sent it in on a Thursday, I think, and got it back on Friday (not the enxt day, the Friday after that.) They fixed it and shipped it back the same day they got it.
As for the other systems, I never had a problem with my PS3 (though I only had it for a few months, I've had my Wii for over two and a half years) and I don't own a 360 but most of my friends do, and nearly all of them have had some problem or another with it. I can think of three friends whose systems constantly lose track of the controllers, to the point where two of them simply can't play it unless the controller is plugged in via wire. But I don't personally know anyone who had a system be completely unusable.

I had to send my disc drive to be replaced.

+ They sent it back ultra-fast (5 days)
+ They sent a whole new Wii
+ My Wii was out of warrenty, but as it was a known problem they did all this for free Smilie

- They didnt transfere my saves, Miis or even WiiWare account. They did give me the equivalent value of WiiWare points back after a phone call, but its still a pain, as I lost my Eleedees save game (which for some reason is one of the only games that DOSNT let you copy the save to SD card)

If you have disc-read errors with Brawl, or Trillogy, you can certainly send it back to be replaced for free.

My disc drive was noisy on some games (Okami) for awhile, but I only got disc-errors when using dual layer discs.
I think the noise is an indication of an older model drive.
My replacement Wii is completely silent on all games now. Just a very small normal humm. No clicks or whirling noisys at all.
