    Nintendo Brings Translator to DSiWare

Nintendo has issued the latest updates for DSiWare and WiiWare in Europe. This week there is just the one new release on the DSi's download service and a solitary game from Konami on WiiWare, with the Virtual Console being sadly ignored.

Check out details on the two new titles below:

    NINTENDO DSiWARE

Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function (Nintendo, 800 Points)
Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function is no ordinary dictionary; it transforms your Nintendo DSi into a unique language tool. Enter a word by hand, or simply snap a photo of it, to receive an instant translation. Thousands of everyday words and expressions in six different languages are included: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese.

Use the Touch Screen to enter a word via the on-screen keyboard or write the letters by hand using the stylus. Alternatively, use the camera to take a photo of a word - such as in a magazine or on a sign - and the software will do the rest and translate it. Dictionary 6 in 1 with Camera Function is useful when travelling, for casual study, or anytime you need to brush up your knowledge of foreign words.

    WiiWARE

    Contra Rebirth (Konami, 1000 Points)
Contra Rebirth is packed full of explosive, action-packed shooting for one or two players. Take control of the Contra soldiers Bill Rizer and Lance Bean and protect Earth from an alien invasion. Arm yourself with powerful weapons and blast your way through hordes of deadly enemies and gigantic bosses. Destroy the evil Chief Salamander and his Neo-Salamander Force with you weapon of choice - select from machine guns, shot guns, homing missiles and the laser.

Dictionary does sound very good - though wondering how good it is at picking up the words using the camera?

Very interesting, I must say this is one of the more handy innovative ideas I've seen from Nintendo in a while. No more trying to figure out what something means- just snap a picture of it and presto! Smilie

Same here. It sounds good in principle, but how well does it pick up the words. I have Wario Ware Snapped!, and it has a hard time picking me up properly most of the time.

Just got Contra. Its a pretty damn fine game that can sit proudly along the others in the series. If you like side scrolling shooters I advise you purchase it.

Meh, I will not spend 500 points on this. If I need to translate a word, I allways use the FREE Google Translator. Smilie
And my language isn\'t included in this DSi-Translator ... Smilie

Smilie English isn't my main-language, so I will possibly make some grammatical failures sometimes. But shit happends. Smilie

Just curious, what is your first language? Because I have to say your English is excellent. Smilie

I just downloaded the translator, it\'s AWESOME, definitely get it if you travel a lot or if you\'re trying to learn one of the languages featured. Smilie

I tested the camera feature, seems to work really well. Smilie

I\'ve bought the translator.Smilie I love cool little apps like this. Smilie

As Ikana said, it works very well. Not perfect but as good as I expected.

One problem I have with it is concerning japanese. In keyboard mode, you get 2 Japanese keyboards. One for hiragana and one for katakana. Looking at some japanese words, there are loads of symbols that don\'t fall into these two keyboard layouts. It would have been nice to see a list of all symbols you can select from. I know they are in there because they get picked up when I hand-write them and appear as suggestions when I type a word.

Some are too messy to write on the handwriting pad (which itself isn\'t too great) and end up not getting recognised so a library of symbols was needed. Still, I\'m very happy with it. Smilie

Smilie You want it to list all the kanji, are you kidding? There are thousands and thousands of kanji. (~10,000 kanji are considered to be required for the most basic proficiency in Japanese). And there\'s really no need, as the handwriting/camera picks up kanji, and you can just write it in the hiragana if you know it.

Normal Japanese keyboards don\'t have kanji on, software just converts hiragana into kanji as you type. The translator does the same thing.

Smilie you make a very good point (I know NOTHING about the language) but it still wouldn't hurt to make them selectable.

The camera isn't perfect and doesn't work too well if the writing isn't perfectly clear. Also, the handwriting pad is quite awful at recognising japanese symbols. Smilie I drew one of the T shaped characters and it came up with one that looked like a K fused with an L. Smilie 3 attempts and 3 different results. Smilie

Yeah, I had a lot of trouble writing こ, it kept coming up as 二. Oh well, it\'s still cool. Smilie

EDIT: C3 doesn\'t like Japanese characters? Smilie Bah. I said that the hiragana \'ko\' kept showing up as the kanji \'ni\' (as in \'two\').
