DLC Considered for Final Fantasy on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Square Enix's Yoshi Kitase mentioned at Gamescom that DLC is being considered for future Final Fantasy titles.

As well as considering new items and areas in the latest main-line game, Final Fantasy XIII, Kitase mentioned plans to possibly make DLC a requirement in newer games, mainly due to the popuality of downloadable extras in the West.

As far as DLC is concerned, there is no solid plan at the moment for FFXIII. However, we've been listening to overseas fans in Europe and America and are aware that DLC is very popular and something that people really want. So it's definitely being considered for future projects.

Thanks to QJ.net for the tip.

Do you think games like Final Fantasy need DLC? If so, what sorts of downloadables would you like to see?

As long as it isn't like 'My Life as a King' where you had to pay an extra 800 Wii points just to unlock the other 3 races. Smilie

I'd like to see new areas. Until I know what FF13 and Crystal Bearers are like though, I'm not sure what DLC would suit them.

Yoshi Kitase also mentioned that any DLC would NOT be story related or extend the stories in any way.

Well, as long as they cut the price of the DLC off the then \"incomplete\" retail one, that\'s fine by me. The full price (retail disc + DLC) should not exceed 50~60 euros ( 43~52£ ) IMHO.

So far i\'ve bought most of my new retail Wii games for 50 euros at the max ! (roughly 43.59£ ). So i expect it to stay that way.

Of course they consider it, it's free money.

You develop a game, leave something out, sell the game and then months later sell the content separately for extra money.

I hate it.

Depends how much it costs them to develop the content that\'s left out dosnt it? Its not necessary free.
The value of a game is determined by its number of enjoyable hours of gameplay. If they choose to divide those hours up and sale some first, and the others later, it still cost them to develop the lot, the only question for consumers is if the *total* cost is worth them spending.

If a game gave me sufficient enjoyment with what Id already spent, I wouldn\'t feel hard done by to know the company has already spent money making more of it at the time of purchase.

That said, Id only pay for new content.
Not items, not new 3d meshs, not even new areas if its just the same as others (ie, just fighting).
New content, new gameplay.
DLC is seldom new gameplay.

I think the only dlc S-E have properly made is the DQIX missions. I can tell because it's free, and there's no point holding back content if it's gonna be free anyway.

So far S-E, as with most Japanese developers, have been infamous for holding back content already on the disc and making you pay for it. I'm certain that is what S-E are "considering", rather than proper dlc.

Yeah, I\'m not a fan of the whole DLC fad. Like Canyarion said, most DLC seems to be stuff that could have or should have just been in the game, but is being sold separately for extra profit. DLC is turning from a way for devs to offer support to a game to a way for them to be lazy and put less effort into the game in the first place. Then again, I suppose the notion of making a single game and then charging fans more for pointless add-ons should be a familiar one for SquEnix, given all their pointless Final Fantasy sequels and spinoffs.

I want to buy a game and get everything the developer intended to put into the game, not have it strung out over a series of money-draining downloads. And judging by how SquEnix is handling DLC for their two WiiWare titles, there seems little reason to be optimistic about this.

Wouldn't mind it so much if it did mean new job classes, abilities, characters, missions, areas to explores, additional bosses, new types of game play (ie fishing, flying/driving new vehicles)... Shouldn't be more then 200-300 points depending upon the content though.

I'm not sure how I feel about DLC.

On one hand, it allows players to buy more content to enjoy after they are done playing through everything in the game. On the other hand, it seems like you are buying an incomplete product with all the extras reserved for DLC nowadays.

Personally, I don't ever buy DLC since it is not worth it and I have enough to do in most games. Well, and because most Wii games don't have DLC at all.
