The Fourth DS Emerges - DSi LL / XL on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Many believed that it would be too soon for a new DS, with the DSi being released last year after all. But Nintendo disagree, with the showing of the DSi LL.

As previously speculated, the unit will primarily be a DSi with larger screens (4.2 inches to be exact), and a previously unknown larger touch pen, alongside a standard stylus. The DSi LL will be 50% heavier than its predecessor, and will last 1-3 more hours on a charge depending on lighting conditions. Seeming confirming the unit's target audience of those with partial sight, the Dsi LL will come pre-installed with A Bit of Brain Training: Arts, A Bit of Brain Training: Science, and Kiyou Akira Rakuhiku Language Easier.

When closed, it looks closer to an original DS than anything else, and for the Japanese 20,000 yen release on November 21st, it'll be offered in three colours: red, white, and black. No word yet on an overseas release.

When comparing this new DS to the DSi, there is surprisingly little difference in form factor, or screen-stretching damage;

Would any DSi-less gamers here consider this upgrade?

Thanks to GoNintendo.

Update 1 - European release, Q1 2010 - DSi XL
European fans can also grab hold of the bigger, more accessible DSi with a release in the early months of 2010.

Details are sketchy at the moment, but it's been officially confirmed to hit stores in the first quarter next year under a different name - "Nintendo DSi XL".

Update 2 - Also due to release in North America
According to IGN, the DSi XL is heading to North America as well - during Q1 2010.

Hell... Only if you didn't get the damn DSi already! I'm quite content with mine thank you.

I guess it's safe to assume that the "DS3" will be out next year then? Sheesh...

It's huge! I like the screen size, but the size of the DS is too much of a compromise for me. My mother would love it though. She has a DS Lite and has dificulty reading the text on it.

I like it and old ppl will see Smilie

DS Lite is fine with me Smilie

Add me on anything. I'm always looking for new friends/opponents/town visitors/chances to appear more popular than I actually am.

I would only like one if the D-Pad was larger than on the DS-Lite and first DSi.

My original DS is growing old so i may need to buy a new one soon. But the D-Pads on later models are so SMALL, i barely can snake in Mario Kart DS on them Smilie.

If the D-Pad's not larger on this one, i'll take a DS Lite (Don't wanna lose my GBA-slot Smilie)

Same resolution but bigger screens would be downgrade in my book.
I'm still using my original release day DS and am perfectly happy with it.

As long as quality games keep coming, which theres been a bunch recently, I'm quite content.

Wow good thing I haven't bought mine yet! Yay for bigger characters! Fire Emblem would be getting lots of love, I'm in savage mode, I gotta finish up all of them hard difficulties!

Wow that's big. Smilie Even if I didn't already have a DSi, I would never have chosen this large model over it. I like how the DSi fits snuggly in my pocket. Smilie

This seems like a smarter move than I thought it would. Looks like it's catered for elderly people who have trouble seeing the screen and holding the tiny pen.

It's a little annoying, but the name says it all, "XL". It's the big design for elderly people. I don't have a DSi yet but I don't plan on waiting for this since it doesn't have a GBA slot anyway.

When my DSP finally bites the dust I'll be getting a lovely blue DSi. Finally a coloured handheld for this gen that actually looks awesome.

I would like to compare these two, but since I wanted to buy a DSi anyway, I'm waiting for this one and see how much difference in handling an price there will be. Depends on that, I think. If you want to have an easy portable DS, then grab a DSi, if you want more screen and don't mind the bigger bulge in your pocket, then grab a DS3, methinks.

I am tempted, especially the color is great!

I find your lack of faith disturbing!

The D-Pad on the DSi is a lot closer to the Phat models than the Lite; not bigger per se, but comfortable. And I'd recommend hunting down a Micro for your GBA games.

Niiiiice screens, but since you can\'t move DSiWare purchases into a new unit I\'ll have to pass since I\'ve already invested 5000 Nintendo Points (Plus the 1,000 free ones I got upon purchasing the unit) and won\'t like loosing those.

It will easily sell 1,000,000 units between the elderly and those that wanted a bigger screen before going from DS or DS Lite to DSi.

And as far as GBA games goes, I own a GBA SP and Micro so I\'ve been set for a while. They\'re cheap too, so those that say \"no GBA, no sale\" just buy a Micro. It\'s for the best.

Figures it doesn't have a GBA slot...Doesn't sound like much of an upgrade at all.:-x

It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

No it's not; Nintendo don't consider it an upgrade either. It's simply to expand on the whole "for everyone" thing by making screens for older people with sight problems.

DSi and DSL will still be sold, for hardcore gamers there really isn't much to see here.

This be a fine treasure for me! My eyes have fazored with too many blowgobs so I must be buying one. ARRRR! How many golds ye got?

That's pretty awesome but I just wish they thought of it before. I'll think on the positive side I guess: At least you have two options in sizes for a hand held. It's kinda cool because if you prefer a smaller screen then get a DSi but if you prefer a bigger screen than get a DSi LL. I think Nintendo might more sales this than before.

Won't work with CycloDS, so no buy.
