Rumour-ton | Wii 2 Features Mentioned on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Wii 2 where art thou? It's rumour time with proposed specs and features from a supposed "internal source" at Nintendo.

According to MaxConsole, information has been leaked on what Nintendo - could - be putting together for its next home console, what many have dubbed "Wii 2".

As with any rumour, take it with a pinch of salt. In this case, perhaps as much salt as found in your local chippie.

  • Wii2 would feature a Blu-Ray disc drive with a focus on trying to stop/reduce piracy.
  • Support for 1080p resolution for blu-ray movies and games.
  • Said to be due Q3 2010, same day release worldwide (our sceptic radar explodes at this point)
  • Supposed trade-in scheme for existing Wii owners to receive a discount on the new hardware.
  • If true, an announcement would come a month before release date, after riding on the back of viral marketing to build hype.

What do you think of the rumoured features? Is Blu-Ray a route Nintendo may go down? Although some sound highly unlikely, what approach do you think Nintendo will be taking in the Wii's successor?

I actually don't think the trade-in thing is too far-fetched at all, IF this speculation is regarding not a new system, but just an enhanced Wii.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that the motion control things Sony and Microsoft are doing are just add-ons to their current systems. I doubt Nintendo would EVER want to be the only company saying "too bad, so sad, you get to buy a new system entirely."

Is there any way they can make something that would enhance Wii graphics that just adds on to a current system? I'm not a huge tech guy, but I don't know that I've ever heard of such a thing. There was the 32x for Genesis and the expansion pak for N64, but those don't seem anywhere near the level we're talking of upgrade for Wii. Not to mention, Nintendo will most likely want to have a way for people to carry their save data over.

Maybe Wii owners can send in their Wii, pay $100, and get it upgraded for HD capability? That seems far more likely, to me. A new system entirely just sounds like it's too much. It's too much tech, too much cost, too much over-compensation compared to what the competetors are doing. It just doesn't sound very efficient at all.

One thing I would like to add is that this info supposedly comes from a Nintendo of France marketing employee.

However, (to the best of my knowledge) there is no Nintendo of France. There is a Nintendo of Europe that covers all European operations, but that is based out of Germany.

I beleive, that the wii 2 will be not be able to play game cube games, however, it will still be able to play wii games as well as wii 2 games. Bluray compatable? Please, Nintendo has never, in it's existance used formats like - cd & dvd, nor do I think they will use Bluray formats, yet, like the bluray discs, I think it'll have a clear teflon-like cover, to protect the disc from getting scratched, that is if they even use discs? What if they use a new advanced form of the ds game cards as the're discs? There might be an application you can subscribe to, through the wii 2, that enables people to get internet from anywhere in the usa, just like cell phones & usb internet sticks. HD & exelent surround sound compatable I bet. I'm sure that, places like gamestop will allow wii trade ins for the wii 2, and hopefully, it'll be at least $75 off the wii 2.
