A fairly big showing for Nintendo on GTTV this week saw Reggie Fils-Aime discuss Mario, Zelda and HD Wii, with a new trailer for Spirit Tracks.

During the show Fils-Aime also reconfirmed the sequel to Mario Galaxy and the new take on Metroid, Other M, for a release next year. He also has very high hopes for New! Super Mario Bros on the Wii, claiming it'll outsell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare by January.

Wii HD? A big "NO" from Reggie, though it's likely that it's because the next console will probably not be called "Wii HD"...

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M confirmed again for 2010.
  • Feels New Super Mario Bros. Wii will outsell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 by January NPD data.
  • Yoshi can pick up power-ups using his tongue and spit them out for other players to collect.
  • Hopes to see more marketing and promotion for Dead Space: Extraction.

    Zelda: Spirit Tracks
  • A sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (as expected).
  • Link completes a train engineering course and graduates after being an apprentice engineer.
  • Link and his new Phantom friend work together in the Tower of the Spirits, collecting tablets to progress.
  • A new trailer for Spirit Tracks shows Zelda's spirit lingering around for a fair bit of the game, even taking control of the Phantom.

    Zelda Wii
  • Nintendo can't discuss the game at the moment, though MotionPlus has been reconfirmed to be an important aspect of the new game.
  • Unsure when Zelda Wii will arrive, can't confirm a 2010 release.

    HD Wii / Vitality Sensor
  • Reggie: "Wii HD is not coming". Believes ichael Pachter is the only one who feels it'll happen.
  • A little bit longer for more information on the sensor.

Wii HD? A big "NO" from Reggie

    Thank god for that.
It was a stupid idea that hugely lacked imagination.

Personalty, I dont think there is a need for a Wii 1.5
The Wii has a good few years left in it as long as the software comes.

But IF there was a Wii 1.5, then Id hope it was a whole bunch of differences, and not merely a improved gpu that can render wii games to HD (and a HDMI port).
Sharper lines just arnt that much of a big deal in themselfs.

Chuck in a 32GB internal flash memory though, motion plus built into the controllers, and a new range of channel software, netflick, cached internet site ability's, and the ability to go straight to a game without going ver the menus and I might be interested.

    But even then, probably not.
I just want more games, and I'm hoping whatever stuff Nintendo put in action about 2 years ago results in good games next year.

Geoff and Reginald definitely got it on after the "interview" I reckon.

And he actually asked the marketing guy "Are you excited about next year?"?
That should tell you enough about the value of that interview.

Zelda trailer looked nice though, although I hope that tower isn't like the dungeon in the original to which you had to return every hour and do it over and over again.Smilie

If it is I'm going to be even more certain than ever that Nintendo NEED Flagship/Capcom in order to make a great 2D Zelda. Because they obviously can't do it themselves :x

Regardless, I'm very excited for Spirit Tracks. I hope it tramples PH into the mud in self-glory.

Kinda wish I hadn't found out about Zelda though.... I mean, she's a spirit? Does that mean.. she's... y'know...? Smilie

I do have to say that the no to Wii HD just means that the next console will be something more. I don't want a Wii that simply plays HD games. I want something that is better in every way.

The new video shows the phantom tower being destroyed so I hope that means it will not be another Temple of Time like Phantom Hourglass.

According to IGN, that Tower is indeed like the Temple of the Ocean King... except you don't have to do the whole thing over and over, you can skip to where you got to last. And the puzzles look much more fun.

    And yeah.. Zelda's... y'know.. Smilie

They keep denying that there is going to be a 'Wii HD' because they will most likely call the next thing the 'Wii 2' or something like that, 'Wii HD' simply looks like a Wii with added HD output, which is shouldn't be!

Oh yeah... is anyone else concerned by the distinct lack of anything Golden Sun related?

    EDIT @ Ifrit:
Part of the plot is to revive her.

I\'m quite surprised to see Zelda get killed and come back as a ghost. I wonder if we\'ll see her revived at the end?

Pikmin\'s the game that needs mentioning. At least GS3 has had a trailer. Smilie

Darkflame says: no to improved wii console with HD graphics.

Darkflame says yes to: more games

Darkflame yet to understand: Quite a few devs will not waste money on a whole new team porting current generation titles. Some titles that are being ported have lost some of what made them big.

No Orange box, no Bioshock, no COD (the way it should be), No RE5, No proper Dead rising, No FF 13/14 (although FF CB looks good) THis list is pretty big

Phantom Hourglass was fantastic. Nintendo don\'t need anyone to help them make a 2D Zelda, they\'ve made the best ones themselves! I can understand the divide on the Temple, but I thought it was a great thing for the game. Gave it difficulty it sorely needed.

Anyhow, this is easily my most anticipated title of the rest of the year, and that trailer was great.

I\'m starting to fear they\'ll give us some vague \"2011\" timeline in the next few months. Smilie

It was great, but it was hugely lacking in feeling, music, character. Capcom\'s Zelda games completely own PH imo; the stories and villains are unique and memorable, and I bet half of C3 can\'t even remember the antagonist of PH\'s name, or the names of any character that isn\'t Linebeck.

Nintendo\'s last truly great 2D Zelda was Link\'s Awakening, lots of memorability and originality in that title.

I can understand the divide on the Temple, but I thought it was a great thing for the game. Gave it difficulty it sorely needed.

    Difficulty =/= Tediousness.
A well made game can be hard without being repetitive and frustrating.

I\'m starting to fear they\'ll give us some vague \"2011\" timeline in the next few months. Smilie

I\'ve been worried about cancellation since it was announced Smilie

EDIT: After my initial doubts that it would be exactly like PH, Spirit Tracks is definitely my most anticipated title of 2009 now.

The theme music is excellent, so it gives me hope for the rest of the game.

what some don't get is there won't be a HDWii it'll be a whole new console all together or have you seen nintendo release a home console a la sega? Think and read beforehand.
ever thought that to him nintendo titles could be bigger and/or better than those? They are to me at least.

You say that as if Nintendo games couldn't be improved with HD and bigger discs.

Usually when people say HD Wii, they MEAN Wii2, the Wii that will run HD, use high quality visuals, as well as much better online systems.

Although I get the SEGA thing, that is a bit of a predicament, releasing their next console too early.

What did Iwata say like a few days ago? Didn\'t Nintendo of Japan say that they Want to make a next console that is SD/HD capable HD for Games that will Benefit and SD for Games that don\'t need HD. Which would be brilliant because Smaller devs which need money to fund bigger projects can still make games without spending a heap of money.

I know what you mean but, for me, meaning in my opinion, Tp, MP3, SMG,SSBB where MUCH bigger than any game this gen for me so far. Yes I\'ve played CoDMW, Played Bioshock, Played RE5, DMC4, MGS4, LBP, Borderlands, GTA4, and a whole bunch more but, none of those outshines those Nintendo Titles, and what, they\'re SD Nintendo titles. SO did the lack of HD made those games worse? No.

I\'m a guy that still plays his SNES, SMD, N64, 2600, GBA, GC games til today and I don\'t complain that omg DK64 looks shit on my 32HD LCD. What I care is that the game is brilliant, and so many of these HD games have been nothing but shallow experiences, such as RE5, DMC4, MGS4. All of them are worse than their Predecessors. So what did HD help in these titles? Make them shiny?

That sort of excuse doesn\'t work on me, sorry. There wll be a HD system by Nintendo NoJ said so, and they\'re the heads of the company aren\'t they? But, HD for me will mean nothing if a game is shallow.

\"and bigger discs.\" CoD4 lasted me 5-6 hrs... MGS4 I finished on the second day and didn\'t even play all the time. What need to see is that, some games don\'t even use their resources properly. CoDMW2 doesn\'t even run @ 720p, it\'s a weird smaller resolution.

You're dodging the point at hand.

Would HD, better online and bigger discs allow Nintendo to make games better or not?

    The factual answer is yes.

SO did the lack of HD made those games worse? No.

Of course not, but they could have been BETTER with HD.

I know what you mean but, for me, meaning in my opinion, Tp, MP3, SMG,SSBB where MUCH bigger than any game this gen for me so far. And in someone else's opinion those games are miniscule compared to some HD games.

You're not better than them, Nintendo doesn't get let off for being any kind of special, because a lot of people consider their favourites to be just as special.

Hence why I said IN MY OPINION and that maybe in HIS OPINION those games are better than any HD offering. So what you want Nintendo to go broke? they need to make some money after 2 shit gens they had in terms of sales.
I don't care what they do as long as I get my good games. Could Nintendo Games benefit from HD? Yes, visually, but if they do push it to it's limits like MGS4, the game ends up that short, no thank you.

MY point is, I don't need HD games to fill me up, and Nintendo has shown me that this gen.

If the lack of HD didn't screw up the games then why this whole discussion? Don't fix what ain't broke methinks.

Nintendo have a money shortage? Please! Nintendo are by far the most well off of this gen's competitors. They're the only company making profits off of every console sale, because the hardware is such bad value for money.

If the lack of HD didn't screw up the games then why this whole discussion? Don't fix what ain't broke methinks.

I guess I should stop expecting gaming to improve.
Gameplay isn't the only important factor of a game you know. No matter how good the gameplay is, a game with gameplay that is just as good on a system with better graphics and features will be the better game.

Yep They\'re doing well THIS GEN. You forget that the other 2 make most of their money from other things they make? Nintendo is purely a gaming company.
Games do improve regardless of visuals. SMG looks amazing, MP3 is also amazing with awesome new controls. They\'re not improvements for you? Graphics aren\'t the only important factor you know? The HD games I\'ve stated none of those had so called \"improvements\" besides graphics.

I\'m not saying gameplay is the only important factor, I require all games to look gorgeous and the Wii games I like do look gorgeous, so where\'s that reasoning coming from? Because I don\'t need HD to classify a game gorgeous? I find LTTP Amazing graphically and what it\'s in 2D! :O For me Art Direction> pixel count. Simple as that, I think that\'s fairly logical...

Why are Nintendo fanboys so batshit stupid when it comes to HD? Shall we go back to the 256 x 240 resolution of the SNES? Or the awful cables with the N64? Of course not, so why is HD such a fucking crime? I just don't get you morons.

    Online!

Tacking on proper HD output to the current Wii wouldn't be beneficial not because HD isn't good, but because they should hold off and bump up the specs in a completely new home console and not tacking it onto the current Wii.

Sure I would love to see a smoother Mario Galaxy, for example, it is a beautiful game that would have looked nicer - imo - with the benefits of high definition.

When people say something like "Galaxy would have looked better in HD", others seem to find this an attack on the game - the key word here is "better" not that it's got crap visuals, just that working it for high definition would have given Galaxy that extra finishing touch.

People seem to think HD = seeing freckles and sweat lines, yes you do get far more detail, but for games like Mario and Zelda it would really just be for that finishing touch to give less jaggies and an overall smoother experience.

Anyhoo, a current Wii with HD output - no thanks. A new "Wii 2" with improved specs, HDMI output, better storage and proper non-gimped online = YES. PLEASE.

So well that they really don\'t have to worry about money atm.

Games do improve regardless of visuals.

I didn\'t deny that, but you\'re denying that improvements in visuals and size make games any better.

They\'re not improvements for you? Graphics aren\'t the only important factor you know?

I didn\'t say they weren\'t improvements. Mario Galaxy is my 2nd favourite game of all time. I would just love for the graphics of Mario to be as great as those of Sonic Unleashed, it would suit him really well.

Mario Galaxy in HD would make it an even better game.

The HD games I\'ve stated none of those had so called \"improvements\" besides graphics.

That\'s entirely opinionated. What do you expect considering Nintendo is your favourite company? Of course you won\'t pay as much attention to the evolution of non-Nintendo series\'.

I\'m not saying gameplay is the only important factor, I require all games to look gorgeous and the Wii games I like do look gorgeous, so where\'s that reasoning coming from?

It\'s coming from the fact that the Nintendo games you think look so gorgeous would look even more gorgeous in HD. Why can\'t you get that? You seem to think the Wii is just as well off for creative direction as the others, when HD and powerful machines gives you almost infinite extra \"creative direction\" to work with.

Why are Nintendo fanboys so batshit stupid when it comes to HD? Shall we go back to the 256 x 240 resolution of the SNES? Or the awful cables with the N64? Of course not, so why is HD such a fucking crime? I just don\'t get you morons.

Instead of throwing around insults, how about structuring a proper argument? That post hasn\'t helped the pro-HD case at all.

Mario Galaxy in HD would make it an even better game.

I don\'t think it would. It wouldn\'t make it a better game, it would just look nicer.

I played Super Mario 64 yesterday on my Wii. It\'s a lot sharper and there\'s no blur, like on N64. It didn\'t make it any better, it still felt the same to play.

I\'m not against HD though. I hope the next Nintendo console is in HD. I just thought I would bring that point up. Also, most of the games on PS3 look jaggy, so sometimes HD doesn\'t seem to be that good. The 360 on the other hand is much better at outputting HD.
