Final Fantasy Nintendo Wii Starts Slow

Square Enix's latest Final Fantasy for Wii is seen by many as a massive release. But first day sales say otherwise. Famitsu numbers have been released for the first day sales across all titles that hit retail on Thursday, 12th November in Japan. Square Enix's biggest release for Wii since Dragon Quest Swords has only sold 26,000 copies, which equates to 34% of its initial stock.

SEGA's new portable football game is the big winner this week, with Sakatsuku selling nearly half of its stock straight away, achieving 56,000 sales. Capcom's reboot of the Megaman EXE series on DS disappoints, with 25,000 copies sold (41% of initial stock) - a far cry from the days when it was selling nearly a million with each release on the GBA. Finally, the obscure (in the West, anyway) anime tie-in, Uchi no 3 Shimai on DS from Culture Brain, sold a mere 940 out of the 9,400 copies sent out to retailers.

What are your thoughts on Crystal Chronicles' performance? Is it doom and gloom, or given the small shipment is Square Enix simply not pushing it enough?

I think no one knows exactly what to expect. People maybe don't want to buy a FF with kiddie-image, so they don't look into it and do not see how vast it is (I think). Maybe you have to give it time to bloom in peoples mind. I hope it sells, thou.
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

The problem with EXE is that Capcom need to make more proper MegaMan games methinks.

As for FF... I dunno, FFCC was never that popular in Japan.

One day I will be a real life anime.

The most recent NPD report (for the US) showed that game sales were down 19% from Oct. 2008 and a 16.4% drop from an already low September.

Now I don't know what the situation is in Japan, but this could definitely account for the lower sales.

Megaman EXE was milked till it died...now it\'s dead.
Though I still kind of want it for notsalgianess....

And I\'ve never managed to get into final fantasy before so I\'ve never understood the hype around it.

Hope it sells well in US and UK or I can kiss goodbye to anymore FF. Its really annoying the type of games that will sell on the wii. Not only sell but sell by the bucket loads. If games like Red steel fail next year I can imagine fewer new announcements by third parties interesting me at all. They might all be fitness/ sport/ mingames.

Monster Hunter 3 sold amazingly well. (compared to earlier games in the series)
So Id put it down to the fact FF is more western in terms of stronger sales.

However, its also because its a spin-off with the last game really not that great.

Whats the reviews been like for that mater?
While I much prefer Zelda-esq stuff, the traditional FF market is obviously more \"battle and level\" style RPGs.
Maybe Square Enix just isnt so good at this type of game.

\" Its really annoying the type of games that will sell on the wii. \"

Twlight Princess sold better then Wind Waker. (5.36m vs 4.55m)
Metroid Corruption sold 1.6m (Echoes only sold 1.3m, Prime 2.5...but prime has had a lot longer to sale)
Resident Evil 4...a old port...has already basically matched the cubes in sales (1.63m vs 1.69m).
Mario Galaxy has sold 8.2m, Sunshine sold 6m.
Mario Kart has sold 18m compared to just 8.5m

    All stats from www.vgchartz.com.
(Comparing sales graphs makes the picture even more clear, as some titles are still going up)

Don\'t believe the myth about Wii games.
Good games can sale well, at least compared to the Gamecube. In some case\'s far better.

Their is no justification for the lack of decent Wii support. There\'s been just as many flooped sales on the PS3/360, and it doesn\'t stop more releases.

If the Wii had a whole bunch of flooped major release\'s, then the argument would have weight.
    But that simply hasn\'t happened.

Some valid points. A worrying trend that when it comes to nintendos consoles companies will put out games that branch of from the originals. Then they declare that established brands dont work on the console (Im looking at you space extraction and your 2guided first person experience" nonsence)

Well, 26,000 copies sold on day one doesn\'t mean that the game didn\'t sell all stock (75,000 copies going from the percentage) during it\'s 1st week of sales. 75,000 for launch isn\'t that many copies, so it seems SE have set this game at 250,000 total sales in Japan and hope that Europe and the Americas pick up the rest of the sales to have a million seller.

Never liked the art style. Seems like a half hearted effort compared to the characters they used to push on older nintendo consoles. The difference in customers are those low numbers.

one other theory i've been thinking of... who are they selling to? "casual" gamers (from what i read) are those who have never played games or don't see eye to eye with their gamer friends. [already established franchises such as final fantasy won't sell because of their name]

those who are "gamers" in the traditional sense who play the wii are more likely to play those older games. The squaresoft fans have been split into two groups those who accept the new games (past final fantasy 7) and those who reject them and stick to the older games (final fantasy 6 and prior games).

These crystal chronicle games have mixed reviews...the final fantasy fanbase was split for a while now... anyone else seeing this connection?

I hope it doesnt do well, SE needs to learn they cant make average games chuck FF on the box and expect it to sell, FFCC series has been pretty meh and this looks no different, its received scores of 7, 8, 7 and 8 from Famitsu

Personally I think it looks like a great and huge game, I've always been a fan of FFCC (mainly the CoOp aspect, but still), I love the world and its races, its mythology, etc. It's the most fleshed out FF world so far (other than Ivalice)

I hope to see it fleshed out even further after this. If SE cancel the series I will be very sad to say the least.

Thanks for listing a lot of FIRST party games. YOu would make a great politician (selective fact sourcing) Now if only nintendo could put out about 15-20 games a year for me to select from. How many million selling games are on the wii and are not first party. ou cant argue that third parties are shifting more software on the other consoles. Look at the new COD. what third party game has had that kind of instant success in the past 3years.

There probably have been enough Final Fantasies. Should have stopped after the first one.
Come on, the word 'final' loses all its fucking meaning this way!

Or make one that's at least like the fantasies the kids who buy these games are having. I never fantasised about turn based battles, dwarves or airships, did you?

Stopped after the worst and smallest in the series? That would be depressing.

I was countering the "smartarse" bit Smilie

Besides every now and then they actually draw on the title and give it story relevance (atleast in FFI and DISSIDIA they do)

Well about those airships, I wouldn't...a bit too much wind you know, especially if you're travelling at such fast speeds!

Which is why you fantasize instead.
Imagine it without the wind, or just enough wind to have your hair and clothes blowing really dramatically and stuff. That's the stuff fantasies are MADE OF. Smilie

With the exception of maybe 5 of these games didnt the rest crawl along to their total sales figures. 1 million sold is 1 million but I think COD devs would prefer 4mil sold in a week then having to wait a few years. Also the original argument was regarding the type of games that will sell well. A lot of that list is drivel. There still seems to be a ceiling of how many titles can be shifted if your not nintendo. THe ceiling is a lot of higher for the other consoles. Ironic the best selling one is a game with mario as a main mascot is a mini game and has a metacritic score of 67%

I reckon that I'd buy it when it comes out here in the uk, it looks pretty good to me.

I don't really rely on reviews anymore, I just do what I did as a kid and say "Wow, that looks awesome!!" and I was right most of the time, I still love all 12 of my N64 games, and I judged them by ads and box art.
