Sonic Classic Collection for Nintendo DS

Sonic Classic Collection for Nintendo DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Update: SEGA have confirmed that Sonic Classic Collection will be released in March 2010 on Nintendo DS. It will include all the original games from the Mega Drive: Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Sonic & Knuckles.

Not only that, but you'll now be able to save at any time - if the Chemical Plant Zone clashes with the end of your commute, just save, switch off and resume later. Easy! Plus, there are videos and artworks to be unlocked, as in previous collections such as Sonic Jam and Sonic Mega Collection.

Will you be tempted to buy and beat Dr. Robotnik all over again?

Original Story:

Eagle-eyed folk have spotted a listing over on the Australian ratings website OFLC that indicates SEGA is set to release a bunch of classic Sonic games on the Nintendo DS.

Considering how successful both Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure have been on the touch-screen portable system, clearly this cash-in could very well be a wise move. Following on from the revelation of the game's existence, though, more details have emerged from the BBFC, seemingly listing the entire contents of the package:

n/a SONIC CLASSIC COLLECTION
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG (GAME)
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GAME)
n/a SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 (GAME)
n/a SONIC & KNUCKLES (GAME)
n/a KNUCKLES IN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 2 (GAME)
n/a KNUCKLES IN SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 (GAME)
00:00:45:00 SONIC CHRONICLES - THE DARK BROTHERHOOD (VIDEO)
00:03:05:00 THE HISTORY OF SONIC (VIDEO)
n/a SONIC ART (IMAGE GALLERY)
00:05:15:00 SONIC CLASSIC COLLECTION CREDITS
n/a GAMEPLAY FOOTAGE

Does the prospect of six-games-in-one, complete with video footage of the Sonic RPG, plus other extras, entice you at all?

Can't wait for this, it's about time Sonic 3 & Knuckles was made available handheld! I have bad memories about the last time there were MegaDrive ports on a Nintendo handheld (lol Sonic Genesis) but hopefully this will be different.

Same it has been so long for S3&K to come out on a handheld console. But I dont want it to be like the Sonic genisis on GBA though.Smilie

Do we really need ANOTHER Sonic collection? There's quite a few out there already. Admittedly not for a handheld though.

Good stuff, one of my favourite series of games - EVER.

That said, already own the original carts and Sonic Jam so probably won't splash out on this.

If this was on a home console I would agree with the notion that enough is enough.

However there are no satisfactory versions of the original Sonic games available on handheld yet; so this is awesome.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles wherever I go!! Smilie

Hmm, wonder what they'll do with the second screen?

Hopefully the pending release of this will encourage Sega to finally get Sonic & Knuckles onto Euro Virtual Console - you owe me that one Superlink. Smilie

But how could you say no to Sonic 3 and Knuckles on the DS?Smilie

Yeah that's what I'm worried about... they might just use it for nothing at all. Or a menu or something.

Wouldn't saving at anytime make the games, except Sonic 3 which you can save anyway, alot easier? I don't need the save points, some people do, I might get it just to have something that I know i'll enjoy again and again on my DS.

Maybe the second screen will be a menu.

Very nice.

I've never actually beat Sonic 1 (got stuck on some spinning barber pole thing) and I don't remember if I beat Sonic 3 or not.

I'll definitely pick this one up.

Anyone know what this is about? I don't remember Sonic and Knuckles both fighting that boss together Smilie

Maybe SEGA are stupid and put some emulator screenshots in their news SmilieSmilie

Maybe they\'ve added a single-cart download play co-op mode? That would be like player 2 controlling Tails in the originals, except you get a screen each and one of you doesn\'t keep getting left behind. I\'ll be pretty impressed if they\'ve done that. ^_^

Have any other games been ported and re-released as many times as the original Sonic games though? How many decades can Sega keep milking them for? Smilie

Also, addition of saving is good. Very lame that Mega Collection on GameCube didn\'t have a save feature added, when Sonic Jam on Sega Saturn did. Smilie Infact Sonic Jam is still easily the best Sonic compilation...

Pretty impressed? I've been wanting something like that since the game's original release! However I highly doubt it... just sounds too good to be true.

May be more likely than you think! Smilie

But the idea of not having a save menu in the other Sonic games was because they were easy to complete without the need to save. The only reason I save Sonic 1 and 2 is because I have them on handheld. I also have them on mega collection and finished them both within over an hour with all chaos emeralds.

We know Captian we know.

As for the saving, I never liked the idea of saving in Sonic 1 and 2, but I guess Quick Saving would be quite handy for a handheld title? I probably won't be using it anyway.

Thanks for the pointer...

Well this is just great isn't it?

I knew it, *sigh* I fucking hope this will actually turn out as a quality port and not Sonic Genesis style shit.

For this to be worth it they really need to pull out all the stops.

Make it a sonic equalivent to "Mario Bros DX".

Have the games in their original states, but have extra modes too. Things hidden in the levels to find, models to gain, unlockables.
These things wont add much to the development time but they would massively increase the incentive to replay.

If you go on the page that SuperLink has lined in his post then you will see that this will not be anywere near Mario Bros DX.

Well it is just speculation.

Besides Darkflame, what about the Mario Advance series? Any upgrades in those games were incredibly minimal, and they sold seperately at GBA full price! You can't justify those in comparison to this.

Easier, yes, but for a handheld game this sort of thing is absolutely essential. Remember they\'re designed to be played out and about...

And I never bought any of those games for precisely that reason Smilie

(allthough to be fair, one of them did have that card-reader thingy with extra levels, before that died off)

Man I would have loved to have played those. I wonder if they can be accessed through an Action Replay? o_o

I'll have to investigate! I still have my GBA action replay.
