Majora's Mask Spawned from Miyamoto Challenge

Majora's Mask was quite a surprise for many, arriving so soon after Ocarina of Time. There was a reason, though, according to information revealed in the latest 'Iwata Asks' article about The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on DS. Following the completion of development on 1998's The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Eiji Aonuma (who was simply a dungeon designer at that stage) was not too happy about the direction the RPG series was going in. It had been decided that The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest would be the next project, simply taking Ocarina's story and changing the dungeon structure slightly.

As a result of the apprehension shown by Aonuma-san, Shigeru Miyamoto issued a challenge - take charge of a team and create a new Zelda game in just one year. If achieved, then none of the members would have to be involved in the Master Quest title.

"So you're saying The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was the result of your team picking up the gauntlet he'd thrown down?"
    - Nintendo President Satoru Iwata.

"Yes. That was the deal. We were supposed to make its sequel in a year. At first, we had absolutely no idea what sort of thing we were supposed to make, and we just kept expanding our plans. The 'Three-Day System,' the idea of a compact world to be played over and over again, came down from Miyamoto-san and one other director, [Yoshiaki] Koizumi-san. We added that to the mix, and then, finally, we saw the full substance of a The Legend of Zelda game we could make in one year."
    - Eiji Aonuma, Producer of The Legend of Zelda series.

"I feel as though, back then, we were given a glimpse of the concept that 'Deep, compact play is one form of the games of the future.' In that sense, as a product, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was a big turning point for Nintendo. That said, I had no idea it was the result of an argument."
    - Satoru Iwata.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was completed and released a mere 18 months after Ocarina of Time to great critical and commercial success and now Aonuma-san, promoted to looking after the Zelda series in general, has recently completed Spirit Tracks, the new DS Zelda adventure, which lands in Europe this coming Friday, 11th December.

Majora's Mask is probably my overall favorate 3D Zelda.
    Ocarina was the most revolutionary.
And Twlight Princess had the best, most diverse, gameplay.

But Majoras Mask...it had the best story. The best atmosphere. It was creepy, and original, and it played with action and consequences. It wasnt just travelling in time, it was allowing us to see an active, breathing world for 3 days and how our actions could change it.

Id LOVE for this concept in some way to be explored more in the future.
Not a remake, but another zelda or zelda-esq game that is "4D". In the sense the whole world is a big animation playing out, which we can interact with.

Well, from some of the comments Aonuma has been giving, the next console Zelda may well be going the way that MM went in terms of a completely different sort of story, and atmosphere, as he said that MM was "a turning point" in the Zelda series, and he keeps saying that OoT wasn't good enough.

I've decided that Aonuma should replace Miyamoto.

He truly is a genius to be able to have his team make Majora's Mask in a year.
    Best. Zelda. Ever.

One day I will be a real life anime.

I've recently replayed both OoT and MM, and I've come to the Conclusion: OoT > MM.

MM has a nice mood, but the dungeons suck. I enjoyed replaying Ocarina of Time more than Majora's Mask.

Replace is a strong word. Especially considering a lot of the meat of the game still came from Miyamoto.

That said, I like Aonuma's work. The Zelda series is my favorite, but is in need of some changes.
