Nintendo Trademarks Zii - Wii Follow-Up?

A new trademark has appeared over in Japan from Nintendo, leading some to believe a Wii successor is coming. On 30th October, 2009, Nintendo registered the term 'Zii' for "use with video games and other electronic devices" and the database has just been updated to reflect the fact that the paperwork has gone through and been approved. What could 'Zii' refer to, though - a potential update for the Wii console, an unusual codename for the new Zelda project or an entirely new product from the innovative company?

Interestingly enough, there is already a product called Zii on the market in the West, which would obviously prove to be a major roadblock for Nintendo should this idea ever comes to fruition and heads to the Western world.

What do you think 'Zii' could relate to?

from what I can think of, it could be a new Nintendo handheld with phone features. Have nintendo and the stemcell computing teamed up to create a new Nintendo Zii Phone? Smilie

They are covering their base's, simply as that.
Nintendo probably registers lots of trade marks on the offchance of use.

Incidently; A Zelda fanfilm "Hero of Time" has just come out. Been in development forever.

The next logical progression for "Wii" given the inclusive nature and all the shifting paradigms that Nintendo won't want to leave alone is "Us" ... try making a name from that though!

    The Oos.

Anyway, it is probably just Nintendo covering all the names they can, I don't pronounce Z as Zee I pronounce it as Zed, as I'm sure many British people do.

No since the Wii is called doing a number 1, and number 2 is the next in order, it would be most logical to call the next console 'The Shit'.

Like in, 'This console is the shit innit!'. Smilie

Here's for a console that does not require a tv screen, as shigsy always wanted.

See, zii? Oh and otherwise, new wii, name is recognizable, has "see" in its talking style and has hd - of course - which is now far more widely known and accepted.

No brain stuff in your game personalities for a long time, I guess.

I'm off to copyright the names "Twizz" "Fwam" and "Shloz". I sense marketing potential.

I do hope that Nintendo do better at the naming game than us. Us, as website members, not the aforementioned "We" sequel...

    I like this idea.

But I doubt "Zii" has anything to do with the next console since it doesn't mean anything and Nintendo likes to name consoles based on it's attributes.

I have a feeling that we will never find out; either they won't use it, or it is some unimportant, insignificant name for a minor feature in a game.

Definitely just a bases cover. Nintendo didn't trademark the true name for the Revolution until after it was revealed, and that made the shock factor all the more hardhitting. Console No. 6 should have that edge too I believe.

I always thought there was a huge market for that actually.
Not a big thing, but rather a portable system without a screen at all. Something that worked purely with audio and forcefeedback.

I always pictured a little analogue stick on a keychain sized thing. Which could be played by the blind, or those that want to play a game without people knowing :p

I think you could build some decent audio-adventure games, especialy if you could have the analogue stick have direct feedback. (ie, dosnt just shake, it litteraly can move itself, or prevent movement it certain directions...so you can "feel" when you hit a wall on one side).

I can see it now. Wii\'s codename was Revolution, so are they going to pitch Zii as \"the last game console anyone will ever need?\"

Haha, it\'s probably nothing. These companies trademark and patent stuff they never use all the time. This is exciting, though. An update to the Wii has a lot of potential, especially if it\'s graphically on par with the other systems - better ports, and they\'d get a hell of a lot more starting support from companies like, say, the Call of Duty guys.

And, hopefully, we\'ll get a REAL online system; perhaps the ability to download updates and demos. Maybe we can get some of the cheaters off of the Conduit, get some of the glitches fixed, etc; I can\'t even play that game anymore, too many cheaters/glitchers.

Anyway, I\'ll definitely be keeping an eye out for where this goes, if anywhere.

Edit: And I get to be the jackass who obviously didn\'t read through the comments, lol. The post above mine pretty much puts this to rest, it would seem.

Then it wouldnt be an update.
Anything that splits game compatibility isnt an update, its a new system.

As for a "proper" online system, we just need better software for that. We are already better in some areas. (Webbrowsing, for example).
Updates are needed to some extent, but I'd rather still have my games running of the disk system them being installed (leads to less errors to start with).
However, I dont see why we cant have downloadable patchs working like channels do. Your not litteraly patching the exe file, your replacing it, but still taking the data from the disc.
Exe files normaly arnt that big at all, its the game-resource files that are so huge. I think this could be done on the current wii hardware with just a system update.

I don't know if you've ever played The Conduit, but there are some serious problems not with the game, but caused by Nintendo's set of rules. I can't talk to anybody on my team. I can't friend request anybody. These things are built into the game; I get a disclaimer telling me I'm entering a voice chat session every time I get to the lobby, but all voice chat is blocked by Nintendo.
There's a glitch in the game that lets people have rapid-fire rocket launchers. The game is now all but unplayable. As soon as you spawn, you get hit by fifty rockets. This can't be fixed, because Nintendo doesn't allow for downloadable updates. The only thing they've even said is "we're looking at some options." That was in July.
That patch system sounds interesting... but here's where I see a problem, at least in this case: can they force people to use it? If Joe the Cheater wants to keep using infinite rockets, can't he just not use the patch? I'm asking because I'm obviously not as tech savvy.

On the Xbox, when there is a new patch for online games, you HAVE to update. It won\'t let you play online without it. Plus, it could cause a lot of technical problems if people with the patch play with those not using it.

The Conduit version you bought from the shop is v1.0. If they were to release a patch and you updated, your version of the game would be 1.1, then 1.2 for the next patch so on and so forth. Players playing v1.0 could only play players with the same game version i.e. All players in the match would all have the same version of the game. Two different versions of the same game cannot connect and play together.

Apparently Nintendo have trade marked other names too like Cii, Bii, Oii, Yii and Zii, if thats the case then their obviously just covering their bases, means nothing.

Or so Maxconsole say here http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=38109

So, settle down childeren, no new console, no "secret" zelda titles we already know is comming, no nothing, just pointless tradmarking so noone else can.
