Nintendo's grip on the UK market has been increasing week-on-week recently, and now the Christmas No.1 has been claimed. Whilst on the Top 40 Entertainment Software list (all prices, all formats combined) it is Activision Blizzard at No.1 with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3, Xbox 360 and PC), Nintendo is the biggest victor as it claims the top four places on the individual titles Top 40 list, with Wii Fit Plus, Wii Sports Resort, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and New Super Mario Bros. Wii all flying higher than the individual format sales of Modern Warfare 2.
Check out Chart Track UK's blurb on the combined format chart below, followed by the Top 20 Individual Formats list:
As with 2007 and 2008, week 51 is the final published chart before Christmas and this is therefore the Official Christmas Chart of 2009. So, in the final analysis, Activision Blizzard’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 remained No1 on the All Formats Chart for 6 straight weeks since tearing up all the records in week 46, all the way up to claiming the Christmas Chart No1 (+3%).
The anticipated surge on EA's FIFA 10 brought the title up 3 places but not enough to dislodge the aforementioned Activision title, settling at No2 (+24%). However, EA can take comfort in the fact that an EA title has held the Christmas No1 11 times over the 25 years that we have been tracking videogame Christmas No1s. For those with any interest in this ranking, the No2 behind EA in terms of Xmas No1's is Ocean (3 times - 1988, 1989, 1991). Bringing us back to the present, Nintendo take 4 out of the Top 10 with Wii titles, 2 of which follow directly after FIFA 10 - Wii Fit Plus at No3 (+9%) and Wii Sports Resort at No4 (+0%) were both strong Christmas purchases.
Ubisoft are down 2 places to No5 with Assassin's Creed II (-5%), Sega are up one place to No6 with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (+13%), Nintendo's New Super Mario Bros. Wii is No7 (-1%), Microsoft's Forza Motorsport 3 is No8 (+11%) and Nintendo's Mario Kart Wii is No9 (+12%). Ubisoft's Just Dance continues to delight Wii customers with an interest in perfecting their moves, all at an impulse price point – the title drops 2 positions but rounds off the Christmas Top 10 (-18%). Also of note this week is Ubisoft's James Cameron's Avatar: The Game, which is benefitting from an overload of advertising at present, both for the film and the game, plus the 360/PS3 versions this week saw around £10 off – the title rockets from No29 to No12 as the highest climber (+129%).

I would love to see less of the wii not-a-proper-game series up on the charts and more games put up.
Still, can't have one without the other, so happy me

I remember the Gamecube days where everyone used to stare at those charts and be amazed that Nintendo had titles in the top 10.. now 10 of the top 20 are Nintendo titles and four are the top slots...
Now I find myself wishing the top four games were -better- Nintendo titles. Well, except NSBWii, which frankly, I love to bits.
Nintendo truly can't seem to satisfy me whatever it does, like a really crap ... no, dirty.

They don\'t really want to play them, the TV just tells them they want to.
They don\'t really have independent thought. Otherwise they\'d buy Zelda.

Zelda had a good run, it's been going for what, 15 years now?
I guess people want something new every now and then.

Being told to buy a game and being told to jump off a cliff are slightly different things.
Jeez, it\'s not like people are completely dependent on advertising for what they want to enjoy, they can think for themselves.
Tell that to people who buy Mario & Sonic\'s Winter Mediocrefest by the millions.
So they don\'t want Zelda, boo hoo.
It is a shame that people don\'t want to buy good games.

And what better way to try something new than playing 2D Mario platformer #8 and Sports games.
Although to be honest I don\'t know why I\'m complaining. This is no worse than seeing FIFA 9001 or annual music game in the top spot.
And atleast Zelda is in the top 20 at all.

You know people buy Wii Sports and Wii Fit because they actually get to do the motions, which is a very new thing.
You've got a point with Mario Bros though, although 4 multiplayer platforming is a new thing too. It changes the game more than say, going by train in the new zelda or a slightly different story. (I haven't played either game though)

Zelda did CoOp gameplay half a decade ago and multiplayer has been regular ever since.
It took Mario over 20 years to have a proper multiplayer. It\'s not \"new\" because other platformer franchises have been doing it for years.
Zelda has touch screen ingenuity. And puzzles that would make even Layton scratch his head.
Those Mario Bros sales belong to LittleBigPlanet.

Which Zelda are you talking about?
I don\'t know any 4 player platform games either?
[edit] Ah right, 4 swords, forgot about that one.

Four Swords, FSAdventures, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks for Zelda multiplayer
Sonic has had three 4-player platformers released in the last decade
Kirby\'s Magical Mirror
Also \'Splosion Man and LittleBigPlanet for starters.

Well, this is probably still new to people who buy that game. Also Mario has always sold better than Zelda, so there's nothing new(hehe) here in that regard either.

Home console Zeldas still do great runs, but I have to admit the DS versions have really failed to spark enough interest in me to warrant buying it.
I think "You can use the crosspad this time" would be enough to do it. Unlike this chart then, I'm quite willing, nay, I am gagging to simply play the same game over again with different levels.
Four Swords Adventures Wii please.

There is something to be said for advertising. I can see the advert for the top 15 games clearly in my mind. They are all still on TV across all the channels I flick on to. Pompus or not I consider myself above advertisement.
I only buy a game based on it having a good write up, if dev walk throughs look good, trailers look good, game discriptions sounds interesting. But there are many that see the advert and proceed to the check out with their cash.
The really sad thing is that a game with a 3D world that you explore and has varied depth is nearly outside the top 20 on a nintendo console. Whilst mini games like mario and sonic are thriving.
Its a very clear picture of the games new nintendo consumers want this gen. The sales patterns/difference between Mario Galaxy and NSMB says this strongest.
