Duke Nukem Set for 2010 Comeback?

Duke Nukem could well be in for a major comeback in 2010 if 3D Realms' CEO is to be believed. Speaking in an interview with new publication Gamesauce, Scott Miller pointed out that whilst it may look like there is no future for Duke Nukem, following legal wranglings with Take-Two over the infamous development of Duke Nukem Forever, the burly protagonist is all set to return with a bang in 2010, with plenty of new content heading to various formats.

Currently there are two iPhone games known to be in existence, as well as Duke Nukem Trilogy for the Nintendo DS and PSP, as well as a rumoured project for the Xbox Live Arcade service in the form of a Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project port.

"The next few years should see a strong resurgence in Duke. There are numerous other Duke games in various stages of development, several due out this year [2010]. We are definitely looking to bring Duke into casual gaming spaces, plus there are other major Duke games in production. Almost all of these [projects] are unannounced.

"We've never said that Duke Nukem Forever has ceased development. Yes, we released the internal team, but that doesn't correlate to the demise of the project."
    - Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms.

Is Duke Nukem still a franchise readers are looking forward to seeing make a return?

Usually, with these sorts of attempts at rebirth, a lot of unfamiliar customers will give it the cold shoulder while the die-hard nostalgia fans will pick it up and declare that it's just not the same.

If they come up with the correct gimmick, however; this series may become even more popular than CoD, Halo, and XXX Hero combined.

Or everyone will watch Ventrilo Harassment and just buy the games for lulz. Either what was declared to be dead will stay dead, or the paradox will overwhelm everyone in a frenzy of purchases.
It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

Casual Duke Nukem? I'm not sure whether I can bet on Duke this time.

I was going to say, "I'm not going to hold my breath," but with Duke Nukem it just seems like a major understatement.

Well I guess you can call me an unfamiliar customer on the count that I am only 17 years old and was not really a gamer when the Duke Nukem series was popular, but I am still happy to hear that they are making a new game with Duke in it because I want to see Duke in all of his awesomeness in a new game with awesome graphics.
I hope that more gamers like me will try this game out and make it commercially successful if indeed it does come out next year.

Meh, Duke Nukem shouldn't be a casual game.

It's all about perspective. All three main entrants into the Duke Nukem series are now very old (in the case of Duke I & II - extremely old). Duke Nukem 3D at the time was a ground-breaking game. Tech-wise it was an impressive step-up from Doom, it had interactive environments, and the game just had great humour.

If you didn't play it when it was new, it's difficult to really judge it's worth, and whether it was over-rated or not. Then again, maybe your completely unbiased perspective gives you greater clarity on the subject. Maybe it's all nostalgia and Duke 3D was never that great. You could say that about anything, though.
