Nintendo Pulls Zelda Fan Movie

Nintendo Pulls Zelda Fan Movie on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo recently pulled fan-made Zelda movie The Hero of Time from being viewed online after allowing producers to air during Christmas.

The Hero of Time is a feature-length tribute movie to one of Nintendo's most loved franchises, telling the tale of good ol' Link who battles his way through evil Ganon's minions to save Zelda - following closely, but not entirely, the Ocarina of Time chapter. However due to licensing issues and to protect its franchises Nintendo ordered the studio to stop distributing and streaming the film.

Hey, everyone. We just wanted to let you know that Dec. 31 was the last day that The Hero of Time was available for viewing. We came to an agreement with Nintendo earlier this month to stop distributing the film. In the spirit of the holiday season they were good enough to let us keep the movie up for you to watch and enjoy through the end of 2009, but not past 2009. We understand Nintendo’s right to protect its characters and trademarks and understand how in order to keep their property unspoiled by fan's interpretation of the franchise, Nintendo needs to protect itself — even from fan-works with good intentions.

This has been quite an adventure for us and we have a real sense of peace bringing the project to a close. Between the screenings and the online release many of you were able to see the film and we hope to not have only inspired those of you that live, breathe and dream Zelda but we also hope to have inspired all of you aspiring filmmakers out there! Thank you again for all your patience with the project and we hope you had as much fun watching our movie as we did making it. Thanks for all your wonderful messages of encouragement and support! I'm sure our next project will be right around the corner! No, it's not Majora's Mask.

Years of work, a month of viewing, and then dead forever.

It will live forever amongst the interwebs' dark alleys... and, you know, Bittorrent.

Well it was a clear risk when they started the project.

I'm sure it's not dead forever though, it'll turn up in the far reaches of the internet.

wtf this doesn't harm Nintendo in any way surely?

Avoid Games Like the Plague, productivity++

Well, the problem was probably it was on DailyMotion advertised as official content from a premium producer.

They might not have been trying to make money from it, but that was probably too close to seeming like a big thing for Nintendo to be comfortable.

Still, Nintendo should do what Paramount do with Star Trek and "officialy unofficialy" allow fanfilms.
(and, seriously, some of those Star Trek fanfilms are just amazing...often having the real actors guest staring too).

Thank fuck, as the film itself is absolutely awful. Don't try and make a film out of something that has no storyline.

I don't think I could take 104 minutes of that. Smilie

But, being fan made and by an independent film maker, I respect that.

I thought it wasnt bad, but it could have been shorter and a lot more fluid.
    I liked the shopkeeper.

I really respect the huge amount of work it took though.

nah, Zelda has enough story to make a film, and they wisely didnt directly make a film of Ocarina. The problem is its very hard to make a film without a decent companion character. You need something for the conversations to spring from.

Storywise Majoras Mask would have been a better choice overall, but I think Twlight Princess would have been the easiest to script as Midna (unlike Navi) is someone you could have a conversation with.

Of course, given that its not a direct conversion anyway, perhaps they should have been more lose with it, and told their own story in the universe rather then being "roughly ocarinaish"

Yes, now no one can see the horribleness of this movie. Bad lighting (bad placement I mean), Bloom EVERYWHERE, unneeded fake British accents, terrible writing, and looking at their 3D effects they should have made the Gorons CGI too (instead of Asian). There are many more things I can say about this movie, but that would turn into a book. There was absolutely NOTHING good about this fan film.

If you think that it being a fan film is an excuse for this, it isn't. Watch the MGS fan film, and the Ghostbusters fan films, they are much better and were done on similar budgets.

Smilie if it been online someone will repost it somewhere dont worry

it look good but only for looking so bad it good Smilie

Well I doubt I could have done a better job, but it does look and sounds horrible watching that trailer.
    So I'll pass.

It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

There was absolutely NOTHING good about this fan film.

Decent bluescreen and very well integrated matt-backgrounds.
Things most fanfilms dont need nearly so much and don't do nearly so well when they do.

They had reasonably music too, considering they were avoiding overly explicit Zelda themes due to copyright issues.
(again, few fanfilms demand much, if any, composed music).

Also, outdoor landscape scenes are hard to do right.

    --

Incidentaly, anyone here played Little Big Adventure?

I made a fanfilm of that so I know how much effort it takes to even make a 10 minute thing.
(and mine was a Swede, not a serious attempt, so it was vastly easier to do)

That might all be true, but it still sucks absolute balls. I've no interest in how much work went into it if the end product stinks.

You're right about that, except that their idea of lighting is "PUT BLOOM EVERYWHERE" it ruins even the best light placement. Actually, the music was good, that was probably because they were well redone Zelda melodies. I just want their songs, forget the movie.

Personally I respect the effort that went in, but I absolutely do not respect the end result. It's just plain embarassing really.

Why make a fan film, spend years doing something that has such a huge chance of turning out like utter crap, when you can make fanfics, fanart and especially fangames instead? This was probably ONLY fun for the movie creators, and that's fine.

I guess for hard-core fans this is a slap in the face. So far I've only looked at the trailer for this and it looks like fun. It seemed to have decent lighting. Perhaps my taste in cinema isn't as high as others. If it was something like Mario (which I am hard-core about) I wouldn't take it as serious as some and take it for what it is, a fan-movie.

I have always found fan-fiction to be quite unnecessary and lazy. When you have no ideas of your own, why not make an inferior version of something else?

Watching it as i type, near the end, it's not aweful but not great either, actors look nothing like they should and the talent is dry, Ganon looks great though, you can tell that big nose is real and not make up Smilie, but otherwise meh.

If you wanna see a more desent Zelda related live action thing, watch "The Ledgend of Neil", it's hilarious.

Should have just made a movie out of the CD-I Zelda games. There would have been no way they could've screwed that up! Smilie

    Second.
Legend of Niel is utterly brillent.
Season 2 twice as good as the first too.
(Little in-jokes there as well, with Falicity Day mentioning \"I\'m not really into internet musicals\", when she stared in Doctor Horrible as well as a music video for The Guild [both also well worth watching])

, when you can make fanfics, fanart and especially fangames instead?

Be fair, most of them are rubbish too.

Fanfics aside, you mustn't have seen many fanarts and fangames if you think most of them are rubbish.
Even then, better to have a 3:4 ratio of good:bad fanart than just one very crappy fanfilm.

    My thoughts on the trailer:

The music is gorgeous. The rest is a joke. Terrible acting, make-up, lines.... I wouldn't have watched it if I could.
