Warren Spector Talks to ONM about Epic Mickey on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Back in the Day, Mickey was seen as the most recognisable fictional character in the world, he even had some great video games to his name. Now, he's but a mere shadow of his former self, and Mario is far more known around the world, and Hannah Montana being a more popular Disney Character. A preview by Official Nintendo Magazine comments on Warren Spector being confident that his new Wii game will turn the fortunes of the mouse around. He also tells us more about the game mechanics, and influences he got from other games.

On Influences:

I enter it kind of out of frustration from the games I'm playing and a desire to take things that don't belong together and mash them together to see what happens. Much of what's driven this project is that as much as I'm enjoying the Zelda and Mario games, from a design standpoint they really haven't moved very far in the last 20 years. They're much prettier now, and that's kind of it. The other games that were most inspirational are the Ratchet & Clank games. They really float my boat. They're interesting combinations of story, exploration, action, platforming and all that kind of stuff.

So I started thinking 'what would happen if I took the exploration and tool use of a Zelda game, and the platforming of a Mario game and brought in some of the character customisation and story and role playing elements of, say, a Deus Ex, and mashed them all together?

On Gameplay:

There will be an action-adventure feel to this game, but depending on how you choose to interact with the world and the characters, as well as how you choose to solve the game's problems, you really can make it feel more like Mario than Zelda. Or you can play it in a way that it'll feel more like Zelda than Mario. What per cent of your game has exploration or what per cent has puzzle solving or platforming? I can't answer questions like that. I want it to be up to the player.

In terms of what missions everyone does and problems we ask the player to solve, that is going to be pretty linear. The thing that isn't linear is how you go about solving those problems.

I want every player to get to the end of the game and describe an experience that is unique. The arc of the story belongs to me and I think we're going to tell a great story, but how you get to the end of that story, who's there with you and who likes you and who doesn't, that's all up to you.

We want to make the best game in the world and that's our goal. The opportunity to mess around with one of the most recognisable icons on the planet doesn't come along every day, so you gotta embrace and honour it

It could be awesome! He has to make sure that he doesn't try to do too much at once and end up not doing the regular things correctly. That's a pitfall I hope the game doesn't fall in.

I love his enthusiasm and his knowledge about Mario and Zelda not changing within the past however many years. He's great in taking note of Mario and Zelda. Those are really great influences and that is an understatement.

I can't wait to see how this turns out. I wasn't much of a mickey fan until Kingdom Hearts and now I'm somewhat fond of him.

The best thing he can do is while pursuing the big picture not to miss out on the obvious little things that polishes the game play; this could prove an awesome title indeed.Smilie

When I saw screen shots I was a bit disappointed but only because the concept art was amazing too good. Im really excited for this game.

This will be wiis finest year:
Mickey, Red steel2, metroid, zelda (maybe) Fragile, trauma team, mario, No more heroes, Monster Hunter

Thats my wii collection doubled in one year if only every yr could atleast read like the above list even with nintendos games taken out of the equation.

Im still waiting for star wars to be announced. Hopefully there are a handful of motion plus projects that will excite me. Not forgetting What the metroid team are up to

He has been saying this stuff on the record since October. I am certain that he can pull this off... If only gamers stopped looking at things in terms of "casual" and "hardcore." That and if all the male gamers stopped having masculinity issues.

On edge waiting for this one.

I think it is important to look at it in terms of casual and hardcore because devs are certainly doing so. Take FFCC, one of the team even commented that its the kind of game even grandma will play. What was the result? all reviews say 50 percent of the game is littered with mini games side quests. Whats the fighting mechanic like? You pick up enemies and throw them and thats it. Level up? Nope. They messed with the mechanics not to be fresh but to be deliberately uncomplicated and try to sell to a demographic that will probably never play the game anyway. Meanwhile the FF experience I was looking for seems to be tampered with. So who wins?

Ok, bad pun, but forget mario and zelda. With the description and brush mechanics, even having some leveling...I\'m expecting it very much like Okami.

Well, they are wrong to do so.

There is no hardcore/casual distinction.
Its rubbish. Fiction. Nonsense.
Dreamed up by marketing departments and then enhanced by fanboys on both sides.

Theres -accessible- games and -inaccessible- games.
Both of which can be played to death, or played just once inwhile. Its the player that determains it, not the game. Tetris, The Sims, Bejawled...whatever. These games people can be fanatical about playing 24/7. As hardcore as anything else.

I'll have to see some gameplay videos and know a little more about the mechanics and world before I get excited about this game.

Style and characters are very important in video games for me, but the screenshots and characters didn't get me excited.

Great concept: linear story telling is the easiest to make compelling and having options on how you progress from level to level can be very satisfying.

The art looks so-so so far.

Could be great though...I like the ambition, "We want to make the best game in the world and that's our goal".
