Little King's Story for Nintendo DS, Moon RPG Remake?

Update - The full interview is now live on Cubed3 and can be read here.

Original Story - Could Little King's Story head to DS, and Moon Remix RPG make a return? There is a definite possibility, according to Yoshiro Kimura of Marvelous Entertainment. Cubed3's Adam Riley recently caught up with the former Love-de-lic developer to discuss Little King's Story, a game he worked as Director and Producer on for Marvelous. In the interview, which will be publised on Cubed3 later today, the topic of a future Little King's Story was brought up. As well as confirming there is already a concept in place for a sequel, Kimura-san revealed that a portable version may well be possible as well.

Cubed3's Adam Riley: Do you feel the idea of LKS could be replicated on Nintendo DS and would you consider making a portable version to offer the game to an even wider audience?

Yoshiro Kimura-san: LKS on DS, huh? That sounds like fun. So yes, I'd like to think it's possible. But in that sense I'd like to consider the possibility on all the platforms. To tell you the truth, until recently I thought it would be difficult to do on a handheld device. However, I came up with an idea that might work well as a handheld RTS action game...

Additionally, an off-topic question was thrown into the mix about a couple of Kimura-san's past projects, Moon Remix RPG and Chulip. Moon Remix RPG, from the PlayStation in 1997, was the first game by Love-de-lic, a Japanese team consisting of several developers that had worked on Squaresoft Super Nintendo games such as Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, Live-A-Live and the Hanjuku Hero games, whilst Chulip is another graphic adventure RPG, this time from on the PS2 and a title that did eventually receive a US release.

Below is what Kimura-san had to say about the idea of resurrecting his past projects in the hope of bringing them to the masses in today's market:

Cubed3's Adam Riley: Yoshiro Kimura, you previously worked on cult hits like Moon and Chulip. Do you have any wishes to bring these Lovedelic’s and Punchline's games back for the new generation, perhaps teaming up with the guys at Vanpool, or Kenichi Nishi at Route24/Skip Ltd. again?

Yoshiro Kimura-san: Hello, I'm the perennial drunk, Kimura! I still go drinking with Kudo-san at Vanpool and Nishi-san at Route24 so if some fun ideas come up we might end up creating a game together. So with some luck we might be able to do something *laughs*

I still love the Lovedelic era and Punchline era. Once in a while I do think about how much fun it will be to play those games on the current consoles. If we make it, will everyone play it? If there's a whole lot of users that love or want to play them on the new systems then we might bring it over...maybe I should use Twitter and start asking "Does anyone want to play MOON?" "Would anyone like to play CHULIP?"

For anyone wanting to find out more about what makes Moon Remix RPG so special, they should definitely check out this in-depth article on the game.

The full interview with Yasuhiro Wada and Yoshiro Kimura will appear on Cubed3 later today. In the meantime, why not take another look at Cubed3's review of Little King's Story to see why it is one of the best Wii games available.

Would you like to see Little King's Story appear on DS, or see Moon Remix RPG remade and finally released in English?

Never keen on these stories. You ask them if its a possibility and they say yes. Not a story. Now had he dropped the news or hinted at it voluntarily then its a story. Go ask Capcom if they will make an RE game without onrails. They might say its possible. . .

Really? Unless the right questions are asked, you may never find out the information until the game finally appears. You've not learned 1.) He has already made a concept for LKS2, 2.) He didn't think the game could work on DS, but has recently thought of a good way to making it portable via the Real-Time Strategy route, 3.) He has a desire to bring his old Lovedelic games back, if there is the opportunity and desire.

You may not like that sort of information, but I'm sure there are quite a lot of others that do want these sort of questions asked and are happy to get such answers.

Nothing wrong with the question. Its just this type of answer is nearly always the only one given.

The problem is the headline \"Little kings story for DS?\" which insinuates there is a more definitive answer or a greater hint towards what is in the works. In reality it has more in common with tabloid news titles.

What also seems to be inferred by this article is that LKS has possibly lost its Exclusive home on the wii. Totally understandable. I hope in your interview you probed for more IR controls. THere seems to be a growing trend for smaller indie games to do away with IR controls or motion. I understood Muramesa\'s reasons. Still baffled by A boy and His Blob (despite CUBED3 asking them) and LKS

    He recently told Gamasutra
Remove all the Wii remote motion control features: When we started to work on LKS, we considered using the Wii remote motion control functions but eventually we abandoned this idea as it didn’t really work with the game, and didn’t make it more fun to play.

Our conclusion is that implementing the Wii remote motion features just for the sake of implementing them is wrong.

I didn't ask about it in the interview as personally I didn't really think it was that important.

As for the title of this 'teaser' story, it doesn't insinuate there would be a firm 'Yes, I'm doing it', otherwise I wouldn't have put that all important '?' in there. He admits the idea sounds fun, which if left at that would not be news-worthy, I agree. But the fact that he follows up with how he has in fact already thought of a way to make it work as an RTS is, in my opinion, a key point.

As for losing its Wii-exclusivity, well, Marvelous has stated its desire to bring many under-performing Wii projects to other systems, so seeing a PS3 or 360 port in the future would not surprise me. Hearing and idea to make it work on the DS, however, did take me back a bit. I was expecting a flat no, to be honest.

Anyway, I'm more interested in the idea of Moon Remix RPG coming back. That looked like a really fun adventure/RPG that sadly never got released outside Japan and doesn't even have a fan translation available (unlike Chulip, which does).

I hope there's a question about future Wii support, MMV has ZILCH outside of NMH2 known to be Wii-bound. :'(

Moon and Chulip look like ideal Wii projects, hopefully the Wii will be a future home for them! Smilie

I never read that past interview but his original answer leaves me a bit scratching my head.

It seems the only feature of the wii that interested the team were slightly cheaper development cost. Which in terms has been counter balanced by poor sales. For a game with a few real time strategy elements similar to Pikmin. Saying a game wouldnt benefit or be smoother with point and click is a weird statement but then he wasnt quoted to saying that. Your quote mentions motion. And I agree with him - waggle or unresponsive motion (without M+ is rubbish). But like boy and his blob simple intelligent IR integration would demo how these games can work better on consoles or atleast on par to PCs.

The importance of all this? why third parties seem unable to use what the wii has in some meaningful way. Either using motion when it doesnt work or isnt needed and neglecting IR controls because they dont make a bold enough statement.

Its sad but they have some things going for them. They had longer R&D. I think nintendo tarnished the idea of motion controls along with third parties because M+ wasnt available from the word go. Devs were trying to get the original remote to do things it couldnt whilst others created waggle fest games. That turned a few core gamers completely off.
PS3 wand shouldnt suffer this problem and I think with foresight they see the need to have core franchises using motion and IR controls (meaningfully) and are probably working with key devs like capcom, konami to get some great games out.
Same for microsoft, although both will try and muscle in on the casual market.
If I had a choice of playing Red steel 2 on wii or PS3 with motion controls I would choose PS3.
