Original Story - Square Enix has confirmed that the Dragon Quest VI remake on Nintendo DS has already shipped a million units in Japan. The first ever remake of the sixth Dragon Quest RPG entry, which originally appeared on the Super Nintendo, is following in the footsteps of the Dragon Quest IV and V DS remakes in looking set to easily cross the million sales barrier in Japan alone. Both previous remakes reached around the 1.2 million mark, but it is expected this could well surpass those due to it being the first time it has been remade.

The game launched in Japan on Thursday this week and with one million shipped so soon, clearly it is not only Square Enix that has high expectations, but retailers as well. The final weekly sales result will not be unveiled until next Wednesday or Thursday when either a Famitsu leak appears or Media Create officially updates.

    16.) (7) Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles (Wii, Capcom) - 13,900 | 107,000 (92%)

Umbrella Chronicles ended up at around 300,000 units in total and this sequel definitely deserves to do better. However, the demand for on-rails shooters has definitely dropped worldwide, so it'll be good for this if it manages to crawl towards 200,000 eventually.

    17.) (12) The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (NDS, Nintendo) - 13,800 | 550,100 (78%)

Wow, what went wrong here? Phantom Hourglass is nearly at the million mark in Japan, yet Spirit Tracks still hasn't sold through its stock supply yet. Being at a 78% sell-through rate this long after release is worrying, since the majority of stock left at retail will no doubt have been highly discounted (happens more in Japan that here in the UK).

Even if it does manage to scrape its way to just over the 700,000 mark (roughly the current amount of stock on shelves), it's disappointing given how it originally looked like PH had expanded the Zelda market.

    18.) (NEW) Shiren the Wanderer 3 Portable (PSP, Spike) - 13,800 | NEW (48%)

Back in June 2008, SEGA release this on Wii to the song of ~70,000 units first week. By the end of 2008 it had nearly reached 100,000 units, according to Famitsu's Top 500 for the year. Sales were classed as disappointing and given how poorly Shiren the Wanderer on DS did in the US, SEGA dropped it like a hot potato.

Now Spike is bringing Chunsoft's Shiren 4 to DS instead, Atlus is bringing Shiren Wii to the US and Spike thought it would cash in on the PSP's newfound success and grab some more Shiren 3 sales by getting Chunsoft to port the Wii game to Sony's handheld. Looks like it didn't really pay off at all, with not even half the stock being sold in Week One!

Now, could it be that Shiren fans are simply mainly based on DS/Wii now, could it be that the series is losing popularity, or is it simply that Spike is nowhere near as big as SEGA on the publishing front? If it's that last point, then I fear for Shiren 4 DS later this year...

    19.) (15) New Super Mario Bros. (NDS, Nintendo) - 10,600 | 5,719,600 (99%)

Do readers know that this is now the second biggest selling Mario game, behind the original Super Mario Bros.? It is indeed! The NES/Famicom game is reported to have sold just over 6.8 million, so still looks pretty untouchable...unless Nintendo brings out a budget range on DS eventually!

    20.) (NEW) Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars (Wii, Capcom) - 10,500 | NEW (64%)

The first version of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom (Cross Generation of Heroes) managed to reach 41,672 units by the end of 2008, going off Famitsu's Top 500 for the year, which is not too bad given how it started with 24,000 units sold in its first week. This slightly modified version (which is the first one the West has ever received, but is just a re-release for Japan, pretty much) hasn't done too bad for itself. It'll be a little clearer how it's doing next week.

    24.) (NEW) Livly Garden (NDS, Marvelous Entertainment) - 10,100 | NEW (64%)

This is the second So-Net casual property Marvelous has picked up. The first was PostPet DS, developed by the brains behind Tingle, Chibi-robo and the Mario & Luigi RPGs. Livly Garden (yes, no 'e'!) is by Nintendo's Brownie Brown and has done far better than PostPet so far (given how that never made the Top 50 upon release at the end of December last year).

It's interesting how Route24, AlphaDream and Vanpool all have Squaresoft roots...as does Brownie Brown! I'll hopefully be looking a little closer at Livly Garden soon.

    26.) (18) Phantasy Star Portable 2 (PSP, Sega) - 7,600 | 549,300 (97%)

SEGA put a lot of faith in the PSP with this sequel and it's paid off. Not initially, as it looked like it would be a failure compared to the first one, but it's now crawled to around the same sales total. Makes you wonder if a Phantasy Star Zero DS sequel will come this year as well...

    28.) (19) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PS3, Square Enix) - 6,900 | 215,200 (97%)

Considering how well CoD: MW2 has done in Japan, and how it's spurred on sales of CoD 4 on budget, I'm stunned Square Enix isn't releasing CoD: MW Reflex for Wii in Japan as well.

    29.) (23) Momotaro Railway 2010: Sengoku Ishin no Hero Daishuugou! no Maki (Wii, Hudson) - 6,900 | 209,900 (93%)

Is this what has been keeping Hudson from making Mario Party 9? Possibly. It's flagship Monopoly-style game has really carved out a nice little market for itself on DS and Wii. Considering it was one of the Sony-stalwart franchises a few years back, it's very indicative of the shift in power in the marketplace.

    30.) (20) PokePark Wii: Picachu's Great Adventure (Wii, The Pokemon Company) - 5,600 | 293,900 (96%)

Considering this came out at the same time as NSMB, it's done pretty damn well for itself. Rather than being crushed by Mario, it's carved out a nice little niche and slowly chugged along to a very respectable total.

    33.) (22) Taiko Drum Master Wii 2 (Wii, Namco Bandai) - 5,600 | 296,400 (83%)

Given how slow this started and what a sales disaster people thought it was compared to the first Wii game, it's really managed to turn its fortunes around. 300,000 units on Wii is nothing to turn your nose up at. However, it's still a far cry from the 600,000+ the first game's sold over the past year and a bit.

    34.) (16) Last Window: Midnight Promise (NDS, Nintendo) - 5,500 | 36,400 (80%)

This is VERY sad to see. The original Another Code sold 100,000 in total, whilst Hotel Dusk hit something like 230,000 in the end. CiNG's AGAIN: Eye of Providence only sold around 1,000 units in its first week as well. Could it be that Japan has lost interest in CiNG's style of adventures?

As far as Spirit Tracks is concerned, I think people bought that game up because it was a continuation of Wind Waker. I don't think the train as the same draw as a boat. (I personally haven't played the game yet. I just finished Bowser's Story and am ready to start Spirit Tracks).

I would also like to say it is good to see SEGA have some success with Resonance of Fate and Valkyria Chronicles 2. Japan is warming up to them again.
