During the 13th Annual Japan Media Arts Festival, Shigeru Miyamoto not only won an award, but also spoke about some inspirations for Super Mario Galaxy and also some interesting news of a new MotionPlus game he is working on. He also confirmed that new Nintendo hardware is in development.

During the event, Shigeru Miyamoto received a Special Achievement Award, presented to him by the Agency of Cultural Affairs. He was also joined by Square-Enix executive producer, Akitoshi Kawazu, who was heading the panel selecting exhibits for the festival's Entertainment category. More interestingly though, Shigeru Miyamoto spoke about an experience involving a hamster, which inspired part of Super Mario Galaxy.

Before the development of the game, Shigeu Miyamoto revealed the idea for it came from a hamster he was caring for in his house. At the time of development of the game, he was faced with complication with 3D control and wanted Mario to run freely like a hamster. The game was set on spheres with gravity on a set point and was designed that way so anyone could play. It allowed players to run around pointlessly and return to the same point.

Shigeru Miyamoto apparently revealed that he is also working on a new MotionPlus based game. Unfortunately, he didn't reveal any details on it. Furthermore, He confirmed that new hardware is in development, but again, no details were talked about.

    This is true.
However, at the same time, R&D don't confirm that a new console is in development as soon as they release a console. The fact this is being confirmed means that it's probably on the way in the next 2 or 3 years.

2012 at the earliest should be when we get to see the Wii's successor and by then Nintendo better have figured out what will happen to our digital purchases on Wiiware and the VC as I'm not paying to download them again, but would like to trade in my Wii if the next console is BC up until GC... which doesn't look likely.

I will seriously burn Nintendo to the ground if they screw us on our VC/WW purchases. Smilie

I love this guy. He really gives the impression that he lives life to the fullest and loves every minute of it. It's wonderful how he finds extraordinary inspiration in the most ordinary things.

It's probably the Wii Vitality Sensor Plus, which actually detects the pulse rate rather than just if there is a pulse or not.

It's not the Vitality Sensor for the simple reason that it has already been announced...

If it was the Vitality Sensor they would just say that instead of "we're developing new hardware, but can't say what it is."

Well, there's more to this article than just "New Hardware" being developed. There's apparently a new MotionPlus game, wonder what it is?

Also, Mario Galaxy inspired by a Hamster, must have been a long trailer of thought.

PSP owners got screwed when they bought the PSP to begin with.

Ive been heavily reccomending people not buy the PSP Go, if it was a commercial failure then companies would have to reconsider but unfortunately people want the console.

Considering the WiiWare/VC downloads are linked to your Nintendo.co.uk account then they could be carried over...or you just could keep your wii...

Well it wasn't a keynote address, development presentation, or anything like that. It was just a few comments he made in an acceptance speech (and who knows how long he had to talk anyway).

To be honest, I would really like a Wii HD. Maybe then developers would actually take the console seriously. I see the Wii losing its sales flow faster than DS. I just think its too early for a new handheld from them.

I'm not saying HD makes better games; however, I do think HD is the one thing thats holding Wii back from developers.

Unfortunately it's not as easy as just releasing an HD Wii. There are currently 70 million non-HD Wiis and obviously HD Wii games won't be able to run on non-HD Wiis. That segments the market because then people will complain that they want to play a certain HD only game on their non-HD Wii while others complain that titles they want aren't in HD.

Maybe you could have it so the Wii simply renders the game in HD with the same polygon counts, etc., but then there would be significant graphical limitations that would in no way help the third party developer situation as they still would not be able to simply port over their games because everything would still require more horsepower.

Also, this fall will mark 6 years since the DS's release, though I too feel it is a year too early.

I agree it's inconvenient but I think Nintendo needs to do something in the next 1-2 years because the Wii sales are going to decline soon. Perhaps the HD Wii could be compatible with regular Wii?

I think they should announce a new console thats powerful enough to out-do both the 360 and PS3's graphics; and of course have some new awesome controller/ motion thing. Then developers could develop games for it the next 2-3 years and then the big N could release it with already quality titles! But this is just a dream...
