Eternal Darkness Wiimake/Sequel on the Way? on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Silicon Knights' much loved psycologicial GameCube hit, Eternal Darkness, might be seeing a sequel or a possible port to Wii.

Siliconera report that the game name has been re-trademarked after it was cancelled late last year. Nintendo now own the rights to Eternal Darkness again, and the sudden re-trademarking could be signs of a possible remake with Wii controls, or even the prospect of a that sequel you've all been waiting for.

...Or Nintendo is simply keeping records up-to-date by ensuring the name is protected.

Would you like to see a sequel or a New Play Control edition for the Wii?

well they better clean it up, i thought the original had piss poor graphics, looked like a dreamcast game but worse. Don't get me wrong, it is a generally good game, just has its flaws like any other game, they can't ALL be perfect like Super Mario Galaxy.

I'm hoping for a sequal since theres only 1 game of the series and it was apparently popular, don't you think any game series deserves better treatment than that, let alone bunging it onto wii unchanged, only selling it to people who know what it is and already played it.

Quality Sequal or GTFO.

Eternal Darkness is now owned by Nintendo? How did they do that? Did Silicon Knights just give it up or something?

Would be nice if something came out of it.

I never played Eternal Darkness. I'd try to pick this up it was a port or sequal. I've always been really curious.

fix up the control system. Its was so incredibly clunky slow and boring. I really enjoyed walking around and getting to the story but dreaded the combat.

NOOO WAGLE for combat. button pressing or motion plus

Eternal Darkness was always owned by Nintendo. Remember the famous "All Rights, including the copyrights of Game, Scenario, Music and Program, reserved by NINTENDO" line at the end credits? Yep, it was in ED too.

I loved the first one. Played through it on the three different paths to get the ultimate ending. Loved how it ended too with the slight hint that a sequel could happen.

I'd love for another ED game. Not a Wiimake/port though because I've already played the first one thoroughly. If they could think up a sequel then that would be great but I imagine they'd have to give Silicon Knights a phone call to get them to do the job properly.

I wouldn't like a port because the original game had some unfixable flaws such as the combat system and clunky control system (just changing it to a Wii controller wouldn't fix it).

A sequel would be exciting, however. I wonder if Retro Studios would be able to make it.

The name's indeed always been owned by Nintendo, which is what Silicon Knights from making a direct sequel without Nintendo's blessing.

Really hope this at least gets put into a fresh selection of New Play Control! titles...It deserves another chance to shine.

Id love this to mean something, but renewing a trademark means nothing really.

Fantastic game though.

No. Utterly the wrong genre for them.
Any sequal or even a port, should be made by the same team as the first.

Yes, please!
I believe the original had such poor graphics and controls because it was moved to Gamecube from N64 last-minute.

More like Eternal Whiteness Smilie

Anyways, good news, I hope it will make the first one available in some way since I didn't get the chance to play it and it was well praised.

Actually, it had great graphics. It was just very inconsistent in places. Practicularly everything was remodeled for the GC.

It looked good in as much as things were rendered very well, but when it came to movement, things were very choppy and, as you said, inconsistent. And they skipped out on some things. I mean, the overhead view of the underground city was just a 2D texture, lol. But it had some sweet cinemas and, most importantly, a really great story.

Probably built on the new SMG engine if it's going to be a new game.

however if it's a Wiimake I reckon that Monolith will pick it up.

I brought Eternal Darkness the other week from Cex and I haven't got round to playing it, since I've brought too many games in the past month and I'm playing through them at the moment instead.

I reckon this will be great as a New Play Wii game. But I think a sequel, or even a prequel, or whatever would be a better choice.

I'm also wondering if geist will ever get a sequel/remake.

Forget a re-release. I agree with the person who said the graphics were poor because production was shifted from N64 to GC at the last minute. Have you played the game recently? I have, and it looks very outdated; to the point where I found it unplayable.

A fully-fledged sequel could be immense, especially if they utilised the graphics of the Wii properly. But look what happened to Project Zero 4 - a horror-themed game that was never released outside of Japan. So why would Nintendo bother with an ED2?

I do not believe the general public will care much for a port. Eternal Darkness IMHO was overrated on GCN. It was a one-trick pony with dull gameplay. 8.25/10. A sequel could do more, yes. I'm optimistic.

How can you just completely ignore the fact that it had one of the most deep, enthralling plots ever found in a video game?

Most people, such as myself, care more about the gameplay and controls more than the story. Eternal Darkness had great ideas about the gameplay, but it was executed poorly in some places.

No one claims it is a perfect game, but it deserved another look.

See, I see games as a form of entertainment, so the most important things are that the game is fun, and has a great story. As far as ED goes, the story is excellent, and I thought the controls were actually done well, especially when it comes to how you can target specific body parts. Fallout 3's V.A.T.S. system put it to shame, but I almost feel like ED was a precursor to what they did with Fallout 3.
