Nintendo have filed a new patent for a newly designed cartridge, for the DS systems. The patent, discovered by Siliconera, shows what looks like a regular DS cartridge, along with an added fatter part on top of it. It also protrudes out the top of the DS system, compared to the regular style carts.
Other than that, there isn't much else that can be said about the new patent. Siliconera have confirmed that the patent states the DS used in it is for "illustrative purposes only." and that it has the same amount of pins as a standard DS cartridge.
Rumours are also already circling around, claiming this could be designed for the DS successor.
Do you think Nintendo will use this new cart? And what could it be used for?

It definitely looks like a rumble pack or something related, but sticks in the DS slot instead of the GBA slot. I doubt it's for the DS successor.

Reminds me of certain cart SL has dedicated his life to hating...perhaps a lock-on feature?It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

With the gameboy games when it had fat carts it was usually an extra feature like Motion sensor (wario ware twisted), rumble, sunlight sensor, but dont forget the DS has had weird carts in the past, like the japan only TV arial to watch tv on DS. I think it would either be motion sensor or maybe some kind of wireless adapter.
