Motion Race is 'Embarrassing' Says Reggie Fils-Aime

Building on past talks with Forbes, in light of the announcement by Sony of Playstation Move at GDC, Nintendo of America's president Reggie Fils-Aime described the competitors race for motion as rather 'embarrassing'. He also re-iterated Nintendo's claims for not having a High Definition (HD) Wii system along with the need for innovation that would be necessary before they contemplate producing a new console, coupled with strong ongoing sales that show the Wii still has quite a lot of remaining life-span.

Do the coming of Xbox 360's Project Natal and Playstation Move mean that Nintendo should start thinking about their next console? Is it time for a Wii HD?

"For us high definition by itself is not the next frontier," Reggie Fils-Aime, president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America told Kotaku. "For us we need to provide a whole new compelling experience in our next generation."

And that moment won't be tied to an arbitrary lifespan for their current console, he added.

"When Mr. Miyamoto goes to Mr. Iwata and says. 'I have this great idea and I can't do it on the Wii,' that's when there will be a next generation console. What that includes we'll see," he said. "I think Mr. Miyamoto himself has said that he is very interested in a high-definition experience, but to be 120 percent crystal clear, HD by itself in our view is not enough to go for a new console past the Wii."

With both Sony and Microsoft jumping on the motion bandwagon, is Nintendo in danger of losing customers to these HD giants?

Nintendo has no reason to have any fear of the other two companies. They outsell them pretty much every month if I'm remembering correctly, minus a bit here and there. It's all about the fun people have. A game can look pretty all it wants, but if it's not fun, then it's nothing.

Only problem with your argument is that there are loads of fun PS3/360/PC games and very little Wii games with any fun.

Fuck motion controls, regardless of console.

The lack of many good games on the Wii is not Nintendo's fault (entirely). In fact, the best Wii games were made by Nintendo rather than 3rd parties. Hopefully Monster Hunter and Red Steel will sell well enough to lure more serious developers in.

Eh, fun is subjective. Nintendo's games are more compelling to me, but I can understand that they're not everyone's taste. It's all still a matter of opinion. While motion controls might not be perfect yet, I can't understand why so many people are so adamantly opposed to them, especially when several games have already proved they have potential. Why must you be so cynical?

Reggie is 100% fucking right though. What is with the fixation on a "Wii HD"? As if just adding high definition capability would be a bold response to competitors, and be worth an upgrade.

Fans really, really have no clue what they want.

I thought he was embarrassed of this.

Baby rattle + Black Wiimote = THAT

Yeah, I know. You wanna talk about a blatant rip off, check Playstation Move... Smilie

I have to agree with Reggie on this. HD is great, but it's not the be all, end all benchmark in entertainment that media outlets are trying to push it as.

Personally, I find Nintendo's games have a magic about them that's missing with titles developed else where. Not to say I don't love any other games, but that only Nintendo's titles truly evoke a child like wonder, sheer fun, and amazement that no other company can produce for me. And they've been able to maintain this ability throughout all these years. Though, like trgdr777 said, it's subjective. To each their own. I'm a gamer, first and foremost, but Nintendo will always be my first love.

So... can anyone name any Wii game that takes advantage of motion control? Except Wii Sports and maybe WarioWare.

Mario Galaxy, Brawl, Kart, NewSMB, Zelda etc - all of Nintendo's first party games have simple point and light waggle. WOW!!!!

LOL Reggie is right on 2 things: Sony badly ripping them off like they are doing, and the point of which only adding HD wouldn't justify a new console. Home consoles are not like portables, they cost more and people only buy it once per gen (in general). Hope Sony fails and comes up with something which doesn't copy anyone else. I thought the dualshock was bad enough being a SNES pad with analogues, but this is ridiculous.

Wow indeed, well I didn't expect a troll to know Nintendo games but Metroid, Trauma Center, RE4, RE:UC, Zelda TP, Tiger woods, Shaun White, etc use a lot out of the Wiimote. Research first perhaps?

It's one thing to try to cash in on Nintendo's market, its another to completely rip them off.

I remember when Microsoft and Sony both dismissed Nintendo on their success and said they would "stay with the core audience" Now after being outsold 4 years, they come and stab Nintendo in the back. Bitches.

I have all three consoles and i have to say that wii is the one that gathers dust! I have a couple of games that i don't even bother to play on my plasma tv. Maybe for you guys graphics are not important but for me is half of the game. But honestly, who wouldn't want to see Metroid in high definition?

That's my general feeling to. "Why not?". People are mad over MS/Sony trying motion controls but are fine with Nintendo essentially saying "we can make money fine without it"? Gawd.

The thing is, Nintendo is a business, they had 2-3 gens in a row with the better hardware, yet sales were shit. For once since the SNES Nintendo is ontop making money. If it was HD, sales wouldn't be high, and with the money they make now, how was it a wrong decision for them? I'm fine with it if they keep making the games I like and making them good. Basically, you will find that most Wii owners have a Wii due to the games you won't ever get on the other systems, not because of it's hardware power. Quite easy to understand I reckon.

I will tell you why the sales of previous consoles were shit, Non existed marketing! compared to sony's ps2 domination. everywhere you turned your head you would see playstation adverts, everywhere, while nintendo relied on their existed fans. I remember sony fanboys accusing GC being a kids console, so NOT true, but never the less nintendo never replied. the war of the consoles is out there, you can't hide ninty!
What will be the answer of nintendo when tomorrow MS and sony will go 3DHD; more blured zelda and super mario? I surely hope not.
This is of course the perspective of a gamer.

When Nintendo go HD, they will have 3DHD enabled. I went to the Microsoft expo and they showed off the 3DTV, basically your console being HD was enough, it's not the console but rather, the TV.

You might want to see it through a gamer's perspective, but I think of it this way: I Like my Nintendo games more than any other, I have a Wii and a PC for gaming. But if Nintendo made no or very little money this gen, what if they went broke? (exagerrated)I wouldn't be able to play my Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. Plus, imagine if last gen I had to play Mario on the horrid PS2 controler,I hate that layout, same goes for the original Xbox. (360 has a MUCH better controller than those 2 but still not as good as the GC I reckon.)

So wanting Nintendo to make money is what a gamer who likes their games would want because the games will keep existing and that's all that matters to me.

About sales, I think you have a point to an extent. See, Proper gamers are usually on sites like these, they are always well informed, but other gamers during that time that bought block busters were casual experienced players. Players who couldn't give a crap about gaming sites, they would play every so often but they were avid players.

The GC failed (sort of) because of many factors like lack of 3rd party support, not many good titles out frequently. The PS2 had more good games out more often. But yeah, marketing as you said was a factor too.

I think when people refer to HD wii they generally arent being accurate. They mean a new processor and HD connectivity.

As for nintendo having no succes with more powerful hardware. well there are obvious reasons for that. Against the PS1 its more powerful hardware meant more expensive cartridges. They couldnt as one company compete against what capcom and SE and konami were doing for sony. Third party games were stronger and more of them.

PS2 was weaker but had DVD. It practically single handedly made DVD what it is today a lot faster. Third party support signed on for another term with sony and nintendo lost the plot. They went for power and targeted the teen market with a purple cube. They didnt understand the image connected to the demographic. It wasnt cool it was fisher price looking.

However if I was Sony I would be blushing because every thing about MOVE is just a rip off. Its the dual shock controller to nintendos 64 pad. Steal an idea and improve it. only this is far too similar. The general look, ads, demos. Its pathetic.
