High Voltage Software Have Completely Revamped The Grinder

Last time we saw The Grinder it was a First Person Shooter featuring four characters in a Left 4 Dead-esque adventure that was seeing a release on multiple platforms. Since then, it seems that High Voltage Software have gone back to the drawing board and completely revamped the style of the game. Gone are the first person perspectives, instead replaced with a top down view with gameplay that looks akin to Alien Syndrome that was previously released on the Wii, along with hacking and destructive action to progress through various floors.

Little else is known about the title so far other than it will feature co-operative online gameplay and will also be released on the XBOX360 and the Playstation 3.

What do you think about this radical change to The Grinders style?

I can't tell if I absolutely hate it or absolutely love it. I was really looking forward to the first-person game. This reminds me a lot of Hunter: The Reckoning, which was an okay enough game.
I think this helps defeat a lot of the argument that the game won't be worth shit on Xbox 360 or PS3, though, so it's probably a good sales move, at least. I'll have to see more before I can decide.

If you like fantasy horror fiction, please check out a short story I wrote, called "Hole."

It's completely free to download. If you enjoy it, please also check out a collection called "Dark Things." This one is $.99, but the first two stories are free.

Reminds me of the Gauntlet games for the Xbox. It's not impressive, but it looks like it could be more fun (especially with 4 players) than a 1st person perspective.

    Nice.

Now add some fun, and someone might consider buying it. I hope. For them.

That was a very disappointing change. Wonder if it has something to do with the conduits failure?

Reminds me a lot of Loaded - dunno why they chose this route, could have made a good DS/PSP version or download - the FPS looked pretty alright :/

I don't like the new style at all, its like a completely new game.

The wii needs more FPS. Not this.

High Voltage had so much promise, now its all gone.

Well IGN says that it's not yet decided whether this genre change will come to the Wii version, and they might just leave it as an FPS.

Maybe they'll try an FPS some other time. To be honest, I thought the Conduit was a good attempt, but an overall mediocre game. After beating it I had no urge to play it again.

Months ago after looking at gameplay footage for The Grinder and seeing some of the same mechanics that The Conduit had gave me less than average expectations for the game.

Now after looking at the new gameplay footage today I think it may be a good idea. The Grinder was going to be a 2 player online game and now it has the potential to be an online 4 player game by the looks of it.

I could get a couple of my buddies and play this and I'm looking forward to it.

SmilieDamn I go on a videogame media black out and come back to see the grinder as a 3rd person topview shooterSmilie

maybe they changed it to have more time to work on the PS360 versions. It looks like they went back to their hunter the reckoning roots with this, but I was more excited seeing them take HTR into 1st person rather than seeing the original updated for recent consoles. The narrator gives it a lil of a bioshock sound though. That voice sounds like it's from the 1950s.

I thought the grinder was always meant to be a 4-player game online, or did I miss something Smilie

From what I remember people were griping about the fact that there were 4 playable characters with only 2 people you could go online at a time with.

I suspect the game will be cancelled for the Wii, it would appear that The Grinder is now aimed purely at the Live PSN market place titles and not a fully fledged retail purchase.

HV are probably attempting to get some much needed cash flow after The Conduit sale to Sega was driven by a profit share deal that failed to generate the sales they had hoped.

It's a shame as the original title held so much promise.

Hm it looks like it might be fun. Reminds me a bit of Diablo.
But the cheesy voice-over doesn't fit the game at all.

And it's a shame to see the FPS gone, although how much fun was it going to be with just 2 players?
