Reggie Asks Gamers to Support Mature Games

In an interview with MTV, Nintendo USA President Reggie Fils-Aime is asked about why there aren't many mature titles on Wii. The reason? Nintendo's developers don't particularly like making them, and they think it's up to us, the consumer, to support the mature third party releases in order to get bigger and better titles.

Now, the challenge for us is that we, ourselves, Nintendo, don't create that type of content. We're not experts at it. Our developers don't particularly enjoy making that content. They probably could make stellar content, if they chose to. We choose to do something else.

He then goes on to say that that kind of content is mainly a responsibility of the third parties working on Wii. However the third parties aren't getting the desired sales from gales already on the market, so they too are hesitant to bring out new mature content.

I’d say that there have been also, while maybe not commercial successes, certainly the products have been stellar. Grand Theft Auto on the DS as an example. The Conduit is a very good game. But what we want to do...candidly is encourage those very consumers who have been saying ‘hey, Nintendo where is this content?’ to go out there and buy it and support it.

Certain members of both Capcom and SEGA have threatened to abandon mature game development for Wii if their sales don't improve, however other members of both companies have since been slightly more reassuring.

Do you agree with Reggie? Have you been supporting the mature releases on DS or Wii, or do the types of games available not interest you? Express your thoughts below.

Whether it's a mature game or not, that doesn't bother me. I'll buy a game if it looks and sounds great.

Fortunately, there are plenty of quality third party titles on Wii and for me, there's more than enough coming out, along with games I still need to get.

Just what I was thinking. Madworld has got some pretty good reviews and I decided to buy it just now from TheHut for a fiver. There, I supported it.

The Conduit, whilst less than 8 quid, seems to only have average reviews so I think I'll pass on that one.

But yeah, the mature content that's out on the Wii is pretty poor, mainly consisting of on-rails shooters which no one is interested in. Let's face it, if people want quality mature gaming they don't look at the Wii.

I agree with Reggie, and even though I don't care about mature games (like erv said, quality is more important), if people are complaining about the lack of mature games, they should either try to branch out and play games for babies/better games (same thing really), or play the mature titles that already exist on Wii.

They're perfectly decent, but people just ignore them because the Wii has no core games.... makes perfect sense.

Exactly, furthermore i'd rather play Mario over Halo or Gears of War, not that i dont play those games either. But lets just say im anticipating Galaxy 2, Other M and Sonic 4 more than any other games this year.

Nintendo have to find that their hardcore market is so much more different than their competitors, if we wanted to play games like GTA, Metal Gear, or FPS' we go to the consoles that deliver that with high quality.

Nintendo's hardcore market is based upon their core franchises which they are very very reluctant to make! They are ignoring the people that want Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Pikmin and so many others.

It just sounds like a broken record now! Over and over again we are just making so many familiar statements!

I agree with everything else, but I still think the Wii is the best platform for FPS games, if only we had more of them Smilie

I agree with Reggie. Nintendo can't create every single game on the system. Yet people push any 3rd party developers aside and scream "more Pilotwings, Kid Icarus, Starfox, Donkey Kong, Pikmin!" A broken record indeed.

I'd rather buy Mario and Zelda and support games I want to see again. NMH and Resident 4 are the only mature games I have for Wii.

Reggie what don't you fucking understand?

Capcom has exactly 0% right to bitch about people not buying their M-Rated content.
Hey Capcom, want people to by Resident Evil?
GIVE US A REAL RESIDENT EVIL.
I don't care how they spin it. They could've put RE5 on Wii at half capacity (which is far less thanthey could've done with the game) and it would've sold more copies than both Chronicles games combined.

Rant aside, quality should come first. If people really look at a letter on the cover to decide which game to buy, they're probably a pretty lousy target audience to begin with. I don't need to see gallons of gushing blood when playing a game to try to stifle some feeling of inferiority. Case in point, I've had more fun with Super Smash Brothers than I'll ever have with Mortal Kombat.

Wait, why are you blaming Reggie? He's the one saying it's not Nintendo's responsibility to aim for an M rating just for the sake of it...

That's the point here: These games only are mature. Not exceptionally(!) good.
I bought Red Steel, The Conduit, NMH 1 and will buy 2, Disaster even.
But these games are only good, not extremely great. We are nurtured by Nintendo only to buy the best games.

These games are good, I think they are better then most of you here are saying, but that's the point: I never was given great fps on X360 or enjoyed Kratos on PS2 and 3 and was satisfied with soso games with great graphics. So we have good games on Wii without great graphics. People tend to discover flaws more easily without being blinded by great visuals. And We expect much better games on Wii, because Nintendo delivers such things for years.

That's why mature games on Wii have to be much better then on X360 or PS3. Sadly, but that's it. And this the developers don't deliver. That's why we do not buy them.
I find your lack of faith disturbing!

Why do people keep bringing up The Conduit here? That game isn't rated M, lol.
