Reggie Speaks About The Lack Of MotionPlus Games

When Nintendo revealed their MotionPlus accessory, for the Wii Remote, many thought it would become the standard for most future Wii games. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case so far and we've only seen Wii Sports Resort.

There's also the upcoming Red Steel 2, Fling Smash and the new Zelda, which will utilize the accessory, but with only three upcoming titles utilizing it, there still seems to be a lack of support for it.

In an interview with MTV Multiplayer, Reggie Fils Aime spoke about the reasons to the lack of MotionPlus games available for the system. One of the reasons is due to Nintendo allowing developers to be flexible and not forcing them to use the accessory. It depends on the sort of game and whether it will work well with MotionPlus, as he put it.

There’s tremendous support for Wii MotionPlus. First, what it would highlight is that Wii Sports Resort continues to sell exceptionally well. In addition to that you’re seeing some fantastic third party support. Red Steel 2 …about to come out. And from a first party perspective we showed Fling Smash. There are more titles that are coming, it continues to be a core part of what we do.

But I guess what's unique with Nintendo is we don't force our developers to stick to a particular type of control scheme, and you've seen that. Everything from the new 'Metroid' title to be single remote driven to 'Fling Smash' utilizing the Wii MotionPlus. So it's all about what's right for the game.

Reggie Fils-Aimé, President of Nintendo of America

What's your feeling on MotionPlus and do you feel more games should be taking advantage of it?

We'd probably see more support if nintendo did something for patch updates for games like ps3/360 do. There are alot of excisting games that could of really benifited.

I've barely used my Wii MotionPlus.

I got sick of having to keep recallibrating it and didn't really get into Wii Sports Resort in a very big way either. I've probably only clocked up about an hour on it.

I'd hardly say one third party game coming out soon is fantastic support Reggie!

I like that give their developers flexibility, but really, support for MP sucks so far.
    2 games isnt enough.

1 hour? That wouldn't be much recalibations then.

Ive clocked about 20-25 hours on it, mostly on sword fighting. Its a lot more depth then it seems at first.

No, games need to be designed from the ground up for motion plus.
While you could get marginal benifits to filter out noise with it, the real point of MP is 1:1 and supplying developers with a way to use the "missing axis" that the wiimote alone cant do.

This is not something that can be patched in,its too fundamental to gameplay design.

I think developers don't integrate motion plus in their games because they believe that gamers will complain that they need an expensive peripheral to play the game.

Always the same with these kinds of peripherals, n64expansion pak, wiifit board, segacd or whatever, they get very limited support.

Again... I think this is yet another perfect example of why Nintendo should not give 3rd parties so much freedom in developing for their consoles. Ugh, they're waaaayyy too lenient on the quality control.
