Pokémon No.1 in UK, Red Steel Wii Starts Slow on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The latest sales list from Chart Track UK has revealed that Pokémon SoulSilver is the biggest selling game in the country, whilst Red Steel 2 is struggling after its first weekend on release. Looking at the Individual Formats Top 40, the Nintendo Pocket Monster duo have taken the top two spots, keeping them ahead of Just Dance on Wii, whilst Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus continue to maintain a strong grip at the top end of the chart.

Check out the Top 20 Individual Formats list below:

Elsewhere in the Individual Formats Top 40, the Wii version of Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games returns at No.32, one place higher than the debut position of Red Steel 2, Ubisoft's great hope on Wii. Considering how popular the first game was, it must be hoped that this Wii MotionPlus-exclusive sequel can perform far better in its second week, similar to how other Wii games perform. Dropping eight to No.34 is the DS edition of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, whilst Sonic Classic Collection on DS is back down from No.23 to No.38 after a strong second week showing.

The only other games of note this week are SEGA/Platinum Games' epic space strategy adventure, Infinite Space, which has made a surprising appearance at No.26 in its first week. This may not seem like a high placing, but given the current market conditions, seeing anything RPG-related and not of the mainstream variety enter the DS Top 40 alone is a magnificent achievement! On the DS Budget Top 40, Ubisoft's second DS CSI game, CSI: Deadly Intent lands at No.9 in its lower-priced guise.

On the Wii Budget Top 40, MadWorld leaps from No.26 to No.11, possibly thanks to cross-promotion with Platinum's other release, Infinite Space, Capcom sees Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles go budget and enter at No.12, Ubisoft's camera-enabled Raquet Sports Party slinks in at No.20, Winter Sports 2010: The Great Tournament leaps upwards from No.39 to No.24 and Call of Duty: World at War disappears from the full price list to appear at a cheaper price at No.30 here.

To conclude, here is Chart Track UK's blurb about the combined All Formats Top 40 that places Just Cause 2 at the top of the list:

Square Enix Europe rack up their second All Formats No1 this year so far (previous being Final Fantasy XIII) with ‘Just Cause 2’ thanks to their subsidiary Eidos Interactive. The original Just Cause released almost four years ago just missed out on the top spot, debuting at No2 in the All Formats Chart. Nintendo’s remake of Pokémon Gold and Silver (originally on Gameboy Color) debuts on the DS this week with ‘Pokémon SoulSilver’ at No2 and ‘Pokémon HeartGold’ at No4, with EA’s ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2’ sandwiched in between at No3. Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ moves down a place to No5 followed by Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ which bounces back up to No6 from No10. Last week’s No1, Sony’s ‘God of War III’, has dropped down six places to No7 followed by Square Enix’s ‘Final Fantasy XIII’ which has dropped down five places to No8. Nintendo then finish off the Top 10 with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ at No9 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ at No10. Outside of the Top 10 we have Koch Media’s TV tie-in ‘Prison Break: The Conspiracy’ new at No17 and Ubisoft’s ‘Red Steel 2’ debuting at No34.

Do you think Red Steel 2 will be able to recover next week, and how long can Pokémon claim the top spot in the UK?

It's struggling? Despite all those TV adverts?

Oh wait...

I know! it's not selling after all that marketing! The Wii is doomed!

Red Steel was marketed over here in the US. I don't know about the TV, but I've seen print ads and internet marketing. I wonder how it is doing in North America.

Maybe the requirement of Motion Plus, besides, due to silly timing of release there are loads of titles to be grabbed at the moment and loads of titles on sale because of Easter half term.

For a title not known amongst the "casual" gamer which by-far out number the Hardcore gamers (at least on the Wii) this game will struggle dearly! Such ashame because it seems fairly decent.

However i will be making my Pokemon purchase tommorow! Woop! Returning that shitty Sonic Classic Collection, arghhh what a terrible emulation!

I don't see the value of print ads for core games - they tend to appear in gaming magazines, and readers of those mags will have already been told by the mag whether the game is good or not. To do well on the Wii, I would have thought you would need to advertise to the kind of people who don't read gaming mags or visit sites like this - otherwise, you're pretty much preaching to the converted.
