Square Enix has finally confirmed another Dragon Quest game for Nintendo's Wii console. Following the half million selling Dragon Quest Swords and the confirmation that Dragon Quest X will be coming to Wii, everyone started to wonder first of all where a MotionPlus-enabled Dragon Quest Swords 2 was, as well as any other Dragon Quest Wii games to build up a strong fan-base before the release of DQX.
Now, though, a port of the popular arcade game sequel, Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road II Legend, which launched on 15th January this year, is heading to Wii under the name of Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory, with a release coming this Summer in Japan. With Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 due to take the Nintendo DS by storm on 28th April, now is indeed the perfect time to bring this to Wii, especially given the system's resurgence in Japan thanks to New Super Mario Bros. Wii as well.
Battle Road Victory is a card-based battler, where physical cards are used to bring classic monsters from the long running RPG series (I-VIII) to life on the big screen and get ready for some fighting fun. Considering Square Enix has now sold over 200 million cards for Battle Road, there is really no doubting its popularity and thoughts are that this could well become the second Wii Third Party million-seller if marketed sufficiently. For this Wii update, four players will be able to challenge each other on the same system, as well as jump into the fray with others elsewhere thanks to the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. As well as the addition of online play, there will be a Tournament Mode so that players can go around the in-game village, taking on various battle challenges in order to obtain even more cards. Since the core user-base will have invested so much time in the Arcade machine, though, Square Enix has ensured there is a link between that and the Wii version, via the Nintendo DSi and its camera. If owners download Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory Colour Code Scanner from the DSiWare Shop, cards can then be scanned and transferred to Wii.
Currently only a teaser website has been opened, but more details are expected soon.
There has been talk of a Dragon Quest X announcement coming in Japan today, with even the official blog for Dragon Quest IX on DS hyping the impending event. However, with Square Enix launching the Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory website today, it could well be that some wires have been crossed. Alternatively, it could be a full reveal of Battle Road with some confirmation that Dragon Quest X is still progressing well. If anything develops, Cubed3 will update accordingly as and when it happens.
What are your thoughts on this Dragon Quest Monsters spin-off heading to Wii?
