Those of you waiting for Nintendo DS versions of Final Fantasy V and VI may have to wait a little bit longer, but the chances of them eventually appearing have no longer been thrown completely out of the window. An update from Shinji Hashimoto of Square Enix on the official Twitter account, has really stirred matters up.
First up, one fan asked Hashimoto-san about the idea of Square Enix's Ever Heart Odyssey appearing on anything other than iMode, to which the response was, "This is at present undecided." This was followed up by a question regarding the Japanese-only release Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2) and whether it would eventually be appearing on Virtual Console, following the success of the original Secret of Mana on Nintendo's Wii retro channel. The response given here was almost exactly the same, "This is also at present undecided."
Finally Hashimoto-san was mobbed for information regarding if Matrix Software was continuing its sterling work on the Final Fantasy DS remakes. With Final Fantasy III already a multi-million seller worldwide, and the even more impressive update of Final Fantasy IV from the SNES and Game Boy Advance out for a long time now, fans have been wondering where FFV DS and FFVI DS are. According to Hashimoto, "For FF5 and 6, there are technical issues as well, so at present these are also undecided."
Could this be related to the lack of power behind the DS? Given how stunning Final Fantasy IV is, though, Matrix Software certainly knows how to squeeze more out of the DS, yet perhaps Square Enix would prefer to use the extra power of the DSi or even the impending release of the Nintendo 3DS.
In light of this news, Cubed3 will soon be revisiting the DS remake of Final Fantasy IV for review.
Would you rather wait longer for Final Fantasy V / VI to come on another system, or would Final Fantasy IV's engine suffice for these remakes?
