3DS Added to Nintendo Trademarks

3DS Added to Nintendo Trademarks on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

The 3DS may just be the final retail name for Nintendo's console, with the Japanese giant trademarking a few 3DS-related terms.

Despite continually reminding us that the "3DS" is a working title and not the console's formal name, Nintendo seem to be taking steps to protect the concept whether or not "3DS" becomes the final name by popping off a few terms in the ol' trademark database.

According to Siliconera the company has added "3DS, N3DS, 3DSPlay and 3DSWare" - suggesting that there might be a Wii Play-esque title that would presumably introduce the new 3D mechanics to players, as well as a continuing download capabilities on the handheld.

Nintendo seems set to continue the "DS" concept too, with various other trademarks popping up in the Japanese database - "DS Sound, DS Name Card, DS Magazine, DSMovie, DSCamera, DSCinema, DSMessage, DSMusic, and DSAlbum". Again it's not certain whether Nintendo will use any of these.

Do you think Nintendo should go down the 3DS route, or would there be a more suitable name?

I'm quite excited by these trade marks. Smilie I don't mind the name 3DS, sounds good.

I hope they do keep the "3DS" name. It sounds like a perfect fit for the new 3D system to me. And digging those trademarks. Are they part of the name systems's menu options? Smilie

E3 is less then a month away!!!

Nintendo's conference is 2 hours long this year as well instead of being an hour. I can't wait.

Cubed3 Member

3DS should be the name. It has DS in it's name, it has 3D in it's name. What more could they need?

Cubed3 Member

Wait, the conference will be two hours long? Well, that should make the live streaming even more interesting!

Really? I heard it's their pre-conference Press Briefing that will be 2 hours. Where did you hear the conference would be two hours?

I think Nintendo should go with a more "new" game, still simple, but something more unique...
One of the main reasons I miss when SEGA were in the console business, their console names were actually awesome.

I don't mind "3DS" but I do agree with SuperLink that Nintendo should use a more original and exciting name. (To help increase popularity and sales)

Well, we'll find out more information at E3 this year, which I must say I'm looking forward to. Even if it sticks to the same name, I won't be buying it for the name. (That is if I do buy one, chances are I will)

Actually popularity and sales wise, sticking with the DS name is definitely the best way to go... D: they have a huge audience who are influenced by the DS name, not the Nintendo logo on the system.

I just think it would be a little boring using the same branding over and over, but then I remembered that the GameBoy brand was around for well over a decade anyway >:.

Oh yeah, I forgot about all the "casual" people who use the device for reading/learning. That and, Nintendo have a strong enough advertising campaign that they could probably convince people enough to buy anything.

Oh my! I guess it is two hours then!
I certainly hope they don't fill one of those hours with charts and graphs, how utterly drab that would be.

Still I'm really looking forward to it!! Smilie

All good names! Smilie

I quite like the name "3DS", though it always reminds me of 3DStudio Max, which is shortened sometimes to 3DS. I do undetstand Nintendo's dilemma though - DS is rediculously popular so they would want to continue the name, much like Sony with PlayStation, but they would want to establish it as a new console, rather than yet another DS revision.

3DS: it's simple, easy to remember, and not hard at all to spell, say, or type out. They hit a good mark with this one.

The former top user was Keven! You'd probably give birth to yourself 1000 times over until you sprout wings to fly away into the fading sun, that or you'd just turn into a lesbian. Who knows @_@ - L, 12/06/09

In all seriousness, Kevin is right on this one. Shiggsy and Reggie first said similar things about the name "Wii" it's easy to pronounce, spell and say. Even for those who are not native English speakers.

Edit: I don't know why my quotes are mucked up... I just clicked the quote button on Echoes' post. Weird.

Maybe this is already up on C3 somewhere, but I haven't seen it.
