Square Enix has confirmed a release for its Final Fantasy DS spin-off in North America and Europe this year.

Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (better known as Gaiden) is the first all-original Final Fantasy game for the platform, a DS exclusive made by the folks who remade the third and forth games for DS, Matrix Software.

This time round we take on the role of a boy known as Brandt. Brandt bas just turning a youthful 14 years old, and today is the day he becomes an adult and so he wanders off to the castle to present himself to the King (no, not like that - ed). Upon his arrival Brandt finds the leader of his kingdom in tatters - his daughter, the youngest princess, has been kidnapped by the Witch of the North. With the King unable to afford anyone with a bit more experience he turns to poor Brandt, who sets off to save his future lover.

  • Turn based battle experience, relying on Action Points. Simple set of commands in a classic battle setup.
  • Over 20 jobs to choose from using the "Crown Job System". Customisable abilities, magic skills independent of what crown a player has equipped.
  • Co-operative multiplayer mode for up to 4 players.
  • Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light will arrive in the US on October 5th 2010, with Europe following shortly after.

    Fantastic news! It's a cute little game...a nice change of pace from the FF remakes.

    I love the art style. The DS isn't the most powerful of machines, but they've got 'round that by making the graphics almost look like an impressionist painting. 8)

    I've been playing FFIX lately as some of you know, and it's getting really pumped to finally have a new classic style FF coming out on DS.

    Even if the chibi characters annoy the hell out of me, the environments look lovely and the music sounds brilliant.

    After what they've accomplished with FF III and IV on the DS I'm looking forward to this new portable FF game. Will be priced at $34.95-39.99 but that's how much RPGs like this cost on DS. Still cheaper than console games.
