PANG was originally devised back in 1989 by Mitchell Corporation’s CEO, Roy Ozaki, whilst supping tea in a coffee establishment. After taking the world by storm in both arcade and home console format, all went quiet on the PANG front…until now, that is. Teaming up with Rising Star Games, Mitchell is set to bring the winning formula back from the dead, resurrecting it with a completely new main character, going simply by the name ‘Magical Michael,’ in the self-title PANG: Magical Michael. What do we know about this elaborately dressed purveyor of potions? Absolutely nothing yet, which is why it is the perfect time for a ‘meet and greet.’
Statistics
Age: Coincidentally, Magical Michael is the same age as the developer that created him, Mitchell Corporation; in other words, he is only 21-years-old.Species: Human, with a twist, since magical blood pumps through his veins, giving him greater powers than mere mortals and allowing him to exert his ‘talents’ on a regular basis in an effort to please the public.
Location: Presently, Michael resides somewhere in Europe, yet he has no particular fixed abode. The building we see in PANG: Magical Michael goes by the name of Dharma Castle, and is a place that can only be seen by the minds of children and those with a strong sense of humour and inner innocence.
Birth: Whilst intricate details of his birth are neither known, nor particularly relevant, we do know that all of Michael’s ancestors are of wizardry descent and that he is an only child. His father is a wizard and his mother is a witch. Since he is such a happy-go-lucky sort of guy, who likes to have fun on a regular basis, he decided he should use his skills to follow in his parents’ footsteps, becoming a magician and using the power of magic he learned from them.
Main Features: Michael is a very genial gentleman, flashing his bright white smile wherever he goes in an attempt to pass on his cheerful mood to other people. However, there are times when his proud stature buckles somewhat, such as when he makes a bumbling mistake with one of his magical incantations. You can usually spot this quite easily thanks to his over-exuberant hand actions and facial expressions.
Clothing: When he goes out and wherever he heads to, he is always dressed in the same manner of clothing as seen in the game, PANG: Magical Michael; his swanky purple suit, white high-collared shirt and bustling red cravat, white gloves and matching top hat. Of course, his centrepiece, the special oak staff with its crystal globe upon the end, cannot be forgotten about…As for when he returns home to rest, riding back on his large black Ace card (who needs a magical carpet?), he simply lounges around in his boxer shorts!

Concept
Working as an illusionist for several years, Michael has always tried his hardest to achieve great things and pull off elaborate experiments that nobody else would dare try. Consequently, though, given his young age and tendency to make magical mishaps, not everything goes according to plan overall. Whilst Michael wants to entertain people with his craft, going outside and performing in the street to the masses around Europe, sometimes it may have simply been better to stay indoors…especially after seeing the results of his latest experiment, which led to the existence of PANG: Magical Michael in the first place. The fun-loving protagonist totally messed up a special concoction, then had to helplessly stand back and watch as balloons started to spill out of his cauldron, into the world at large. Thankfully, being the sort of person to take responsibility for his actions, Michael sprung into action straight away. One of his main concerns is about the environment around him, since if the world is not a clean and tidy place how can people be as content as he is? This is why he also practices ecological magic; to make the world a better place on the whole. Sadly, in his eagerness to amuse a new group of admirers he met, things took a turn for the disastrous! Despite wanting to do entertaining magic that is friendly to nature, the magical mishap that led to the creation of so many balloons, in this instance, left him with the daunting task of destroying all of the spherical menaces with his mighty staff so that they do not dirty the Earth any more than they already have.
Appearances
Best Appearance
This is Magical Michael’s first time appearing in the world of gaming, with PANG: Magical Michael set for release sometime in Autumn, likely in a few months. However, despite this being his debut, he could not have picked a better title to appear in. PANG and Buster Bros. were enormously popular back in the 1990s and now the original developer is back, boasting the classic gameplay that gripped gamers decades ago, as well as a slew of new ideas and modes that will encourage newcomers to the fold. This new Nintendo DS version of PANG is all set to become one of the hottest puzzle games not only of 2010, but on the DS in general.
Do Not Mention...
Michael is a massive fan of sushi and teriyaki hamburgers, but if anyone dares to give him celery, then they had better get ready to run for the hills. He is not a malicious or violent person by any means, but boy does he hate celery! He really does not appreciate ignorant people either. After putting so much effort into entertaining, being ignored makes him extremely upset. Rather than sulking too much, though, he normally then goes in search of those with a good sense of humour who will give him the attention he yearns for.Magical Michael is certainly the sort of character that will capture the imagination of gamers everywhere, and will hopefully have the chance to appear not only in PANG: Magical Michael, but numerous other games in the future. His career in the limelight has only just begun, yet given his taste for fame and the general love of attention it would be surprising if we never saw him grace our gaming systems again. Keep an eye out for his debut DS game later this year in Europe!

It's been a long while since we did a Character Profile on Cubed3. What do people think of the slightly updated format?
Magical Michael seemed the perfect candidate for this sort of article since he's brand new on the scene and nobody knows anything about him.
Just to clarify, all the above details are official. They came straight from the development team at Mitchell Corporation

No, Mitchell created/owns PANG, whilst Capcom licensed it for the arcade. Capcom owns the name 'Buster Bros,' though.

Cool, thanks for the info, man! Really makes more sense now. Wondered why they'd changed from the Buster Bros!
Magical Michael sounds cool. Is he gonna become Mitchell's mascot?

But in the credits of Pang, all the staff was from Capcom! Including Yoshiki Okamoto as director.

Well, obviously you can't 100% rely on information from Wikipedia, but it does back up what I was saying. I'm not discounting what you said, though, John. I'll have to ask Mr. Ozaki next time I speak to him.
There's an interview about PANG: Magical Michael coming up soon as well. Hope readers are enjoying the PANG coverage so far
