    E310 | Miyamoto on 3DS, Vitality Sensor, Pikmin 3

Miyamoto sat down and discussed the 3DS, competition with Apple, Vitality Sensor and Pikmin 3 this week at E3.

With all the the emphasis this week being on the huge catalogue of Wii, DS and 3DS games shown at the expo this week,Miyamoto reflected on how the 3DS can change the industry, what's up with the absence of the Vitality Sensor and Pikmin 3.
  • The vitality sensor wasn't suited to the busy E3 environment, given its emphasis on relaxation, so Nintendo didn't feel it was the right time or place to show the game.
  • Nintendo are keen to improve the online experience, especially in an age were some form of internet is just about everywhere - but try to do things the Nintendo way, instead of doing the same kinds of things as others.
  • The tag mode which lets players connect to networks and other users on the go can be used to change game data, add new things whilst players are on the move - Nintendo hope this will be one of the ways to add the "Nintendo feel" to the online/wireless experience.
  • Nintendo usually produce a quick Mario tech demo for new hardware but felt that they needed to hold back so a new Mario game would be ready before its shown. Now that work on Super Mario Galaxy 2 is beyond completion, Nintendo are able to work on a new game for 3DS.
  • Miyamoto declined knowing about possible software installations mentioned in a Nikkei article.
  • Miyamoto hasn't had time to try out Playstation Move and Microsoft Kinect, however he feels it's a good thing for gaming - to broaden the market even further.
  • The topic of competition with gaming on mobile phones and on Apple products has come up in discussion, however Miyamoto feels if the product and hardware (DS, 3DS) offers something unique enough, players will want to carry Nintendo hardware around with them.
  • There are some ideas that Nintendo wanted to implem, ented with the Virtual Boy that they can carry on to the 3DS. With the console, everyone will have the ability to go 3D if they want to, whereas with a periperhal it can be fairly limiting to only those who'd buy the glasses etc.
  • Bringing back Donkey Kong Country for the fans, particuarly in North America, and for the team at Retro Studios being very excited when the franchise came up as an option.
  • Pikmin 3 is still in development, but Miyamoto wasn't able to discuss it. However he has confirmed that it still is going to be for Wii.

Im glad pikmin is for the wii first although I would love to see it on the 3DS, the tech demo looked good.

I dont know why the Ipod is effecting the DS so much. One screen with no buttons and download only makes for a very cramped awkward and limited experience. I cant imagine any of the games have any real depth to them

Those of you worried that Retro's talent is wasted on DKC4 or that they're being forced to develop it can rest easy.

It seems Retro love old Rare too.

Why is it wasted? I think just about every DKC fan has been wanting this since the DKC3, including myself. Retro are also taking it very seriously and making sure it's right for the fans. They've commented on the visuals and music being highlights of the original games and are making sure those two areas don't disappoint this time.

I didn't see anyone saying NSMBWii was a waste. DKC Returns looks far better.

I like the fact that Nintendo are getting other companies like Retro to try their hand at different franchises. Other big companies often stifle small developers talents with one franchise done to death.

Not knowing about software installations is a bit disheartening. Maybe it isn't true then. Smilie

Quite the contrast attitude relatively to MS and Sony words on their conferences. I kinda like it coming from him.

Or maybe, since there's a rumour he's retiring, he's trying to become more friendly towards the other companies so he can go to them after leaving Nintendo >_>

I was one that said they were wasting their talents, but mostly because I never cared for any Donkey Kong game. I'm just glad that they are getting to work on something they love.

And I was wondering where the Vitality Sensor was at E3. I thought they would announce some games, but it'll probably be used only in a couple (casual) games in all.

I would trust Retro to make just about any game. I'm pumped about DKC4. Nostalgia to the max! Smilie

NO Kremlins foor DKC Returns. BOOOOH!:-x

Still looks awesome though, but because of that, it lost half of my childhood's magic. Kremlins were the coolest, most badass villains ever. Especially in the darker, more piraty DKC2

I think the DS should be used as a control option for pikmin.

I kinda wanted to hear about the Batman Brave and the Bold Wii game with connectivity with the DS game version.

I liked the use of Everything or Nothing GBA connected with Everything or Nothing GC...

Stop with the vitality sensor and look into making games that work with the DS and Wii together...that was invisioned a long long time ago big n!!!

This bothers me. I understand them wanting to really push the "we're different from the rest" thing, but still. Why have something worse just in order to be different? Activision are even kicking Nintendo in the arse about online for COD: Black Ops on Wii, really pushing for voice chat and trying to avoid friend codes.

They shouldn't have to do all that, because it should just be there already.

Somehow Capcom got around the friendcodes for Monster Hunter 3, so I don't see why Nintendo wouldn't let anyone else.

It may be because Capcom set up their own free servers for it. In any case a game that big seemed to be a decent indication that friend codes were slowly on the way out.

However yeah I'm also worried by the fact Nintendo want to be different. Friend codes are horrible.

I agree that Apple is effecting the DS because on the iPod you can download music, apps, pictures, books(on iPad), and games. People think the DS isn't as good because they think the graphics stink, know that theirs no 3G coverage, and you can have music and apps on your iPod.

A thing that effects the Wii is Playstation 3 and xbox360. Most of the people I know are xbox360 players, but they have a Wii. Guess what games they play on their Wii. None. People don't like the Wii because the graphics aren't good and their is no gore or blood that looks real in any Wii games. People who don't like the Wii don't like it because of this. There should be better graphics and there should be more violent rated 'M' games, but still Nintendo games separate from those games. I'm not asking for Mario to be able to use guns and knives to kill Bowser with or anything, but Nintendo should get more hardcore, violent games on Wii for kids, I mean mature adults.

The 3DS should be able to make the iPod look like a ten-year-old cell phone, hopefully...

Pikmin 3 would have bern lost with all of the other games in E3, so I'm happy that they didn't annouce anything in E3 even if I'm Pikmins' #1 fan. I've beat Pikmin about 15 times and Pikmin 2 about 10 times. I finally was able to get all 30 parts in 13 days to beat my record of 14. I wonder if there is a record of how fast you can beat Pikmin. I'm bored.... I might as well go to sleep and dream about getting Pikmin 3 at midnight the day it comes out then playing it for hours and beating it just like how people get a new Harry Potter book then staying up all night reading it. I really am bored... I talking gibberish*snores:zzzzzzzzzzzz*
