E310 Media | Mickey Gets Epic Makeover on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

No doubt irritating the abandoned Disney stars yet more, Mickey Mouse was thrust into the spotlight at Nintendo's press conference at E3 2010 last week with his latest game outing, Disney Epic Mickey. The famous mouse must traverse a world full of Disney's forgotten side-characters and ran by Disney's original star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, in order to become an 'epic hero'.

Mickey must solve the wasteland's problems with the power of paint, using the colourful stuff and paint thinner to respectively create and destroy objects in the environment. Every puzzle can be solved in multiple ways, and it is how the player chooses to approach things that will effect how each character's story ends. When it was originally unveiled, Mickey would morph depending on decisions, even beginning to look a little...well, malevolent. This has now been changed, with small guardians instead floating around the rodent to let players know how his morality is holding up.

While much of the game is set in 3D lands, Mickey also has to hop his way through a series of 2D levels that connect the different areas. These sections are based around classic Disney shorts such as Mickey's own Steamboat Willy, and also take inspiration from the SNES/Mega Drive Mickey Mouse platformers of old.

Yes. Art style is pleasantly better than the first Game Informer screens let on.

I thought the gameplay demo looked aweful. Bad level design.
