Iwata: 3D Video Chat Possible on 3DS on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With its numerous improved and new features, the DS successor can do a fair bit, including the possibility of 3D video chat.

In an interview with Forbes Magazine, the Nintendo president revealed that the ability to stream 3D images in some form of chat is technically possible using the hardware.

Technologically speaking, a variety of different things are possible with the 3DS, for example, 3D video chat.

The 3DS will be able to produce 3D images using the camera function, but whether Nintendo will include video/video chat is still unconfirmed.

Would you like to see/use a possible 3D video chat feature?

umm...but isn't there just one user-facing camera?

I read this somewhere else and the biggest argument against this feature is that, the 3DS would be incapable of doing 3D Chat if the 3D cameras are on the outside of the system. Unless the inside, single camera can some how record you and produce you 3D to the person your are speaking to, then a redesign would be in order for two inside cameras right? Only time will tell for sure, but hopefully this will be a reality.

probably on the v2 of the 3DS.

Boy I really hope that's not the case... They still have enough time to incorporate this into the final product even if this does call for a redesign of the E3 model shown. I DO NOT WANT TO HAVE TO WAIT AND BE CHARGED MORE MONEY FOR A 3DSXL. This thing is already going to be expensive enough with the software that follows...

The 3DSi is inevitable. Just looking at the 3DS you can see numerous ways they can improve it. Bigger screens, better button placement etc etc.

Even if 3D video chat isn't possible in the current set-up, normal 2D video chat is so I fully expect to see it.Smilie

I'm not too bothered about video chat, personally. It's not something I'd hardly use, if at all.

I am patient enough to wait though and I may do for the next model of the 3DS anyway. A year feels so quick to me now, so it won't feel like I'm waiting that long.

I wish I was that patient. Smilie I'll just get the first model, skip the second and then get the third. Smilie

You just know there's going to be one. Smilie

Then again, let's not forget that what we saw as just a working prototype Smilie

Iwata once said that Video chat was possible with the DSi too. With a proper new device, maybe they'll finally implement this. Would be great if we could have friend lists too (sans 12 digit codes of course Smilie ).

True. Smilie I don't think the screen size will change from now till release but the button layout and other aesthetic features will likely change.

I don't really need 3D video chat, but regular video chat would be kinda cool.

I'll get the first model, and skip all the succeeding models.

If the DS is anything to go by the upgrades will be mininal and not anything worth noting, a bit like the PSP upgrades.

it's just something that will happen, regardless of what we see now.

every portable nintendo has had, has been through changes. everything one of them.

Gameboy, (to Gameboy Color), Gameboy Pocket
GBA, GBA SP, GB Micro, then GB SP with better screens
DS Phat, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL

lol i'm pretty sure we've bought 1 of each...i know i have lol

I was disappointed when the 3DS only had one front-facing camera. There is so much you could do with 2 cameras (think Natal).

Natal works mostly by IR reflection actually, its only got a single RGB camera itself. (the 3d is 2 of its 3 lens, with 2D colour one in the middle).

Still, yes, with 2 camera inside could could triangulate some stuff.

Eh..no one is forcing you to buy the newer versions, you can still play games on your DSphat for instance if you bought one way back in 2004(unlike certain older iPhone which can't use certain software).
There second iterations of there devices are usually just cosmetic changes, the only major thing the DSlite had changed other than the look of it was the screen brightness.

DSi added a lot of fluff, theres the DSiware but it's not been very good so far and it will be in the 3DS from the beginning so not much of a loss there.

Yeah, don't worry about new iterations coming out later in the lifetime. If the 3DS is worth it to you, then buy it. Who cares if a revision is released later? You just need to make another purchasing decision.

I think I may be a little misunderstood. I'm just saying that if Nintendo still has this window of opportunity to implement some of these awesome features they say are possible, why not do it now? Lord knows at the way Nintendo keeps coming up with these innovative concepts, in two-three years when the 3DSi or 3DSXL comes around, I'm sure they will have some new tricks and features to unveil. I just want to really get the most bang for my buck the first time around with this new system.

I CAN'T WAIT TO GET MY HANDS ON IT!!! Smilie

Exactly.
I'm still using my original DS and am perfectly happy with it.
I didn't care for visual revisions (DSlite) I didn't care for any current online distributed stuff nor the current camera games (DSi) and I dont have bad eyesite (DSiXL).
So I'm happy with my "ugly" original DS and couldn't care less untill the games stop coming Smilie

This is going top be so cool! Im stoked to play some 3d games, but now 3d chat! hell yeah!

I'd love to see video chat, but to be honest, I'd probably not know anyone else with a 3DS. Smilie

Nintendo never said that what we saw was the final 3DS design. So they could be going to put two cameras inside!

same arguement can be made of the ipad huh?

no camera added nor a usb support.

and then later on, they allow to use the iphone as a camera to the ipad and there is a new model mentioned or coming out of the ipad with usb support, but no camera....i think...

Video chat in .3 megapixels = "Hey, Mr. Pixelated Blob! How are you today?"
