Nintendo of America today confirmed plans to lower the retail price of both the Nintendo DSi and DSi XL from September.

With the 3D powerhouse, 3DS, on the way in the next six months or so, those who want a slice of regular DS and nifty treats on the DSiWare service can get hold of a DSi console with a $20 reduction to the recommended retail price.

From September 12th 2010 Nintendo DSi will sell for around $149.99, with it's larger-screened brother for $169.99.

Not fussed with the additional DSi features? You can still bag the adorable DS Lite for a tidy $129.99.

The reductions fall in line with plans to announce 3DS release details on September 29th 2010.

Certainly paves the way for a 3DS release this year. I'm sticking with my initial guess that it'll match the DSi XL's original price at £150.

With these price cuts, could the 3DS really be $199?

Not big surprise. I wouldn't be surprised either if GameStop started a trade-in bonus for anyone exchanging a DS for a 3DS.
It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

DSi = lulz. A total aborted fetus of a console. I feel like an idiot for owning one.

My DSi has served me well. Got quite a few great games off DSiware and the games look better on the bigger screens. It's a shame Nintendo didn't take advantage of it's extra power but I never expected them to.

When the 3DS arrives, I'll still use my DSi for DS games. The 3DS will be 3DS games only.
