Donkey Kong Country Returns Wii - More Footage on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Footage taken during PAX earlier this week reveals new gameplay snippets from a minecart level in Donkey Kong Country: Returns.

Retro Studios is taking the world's most famous simian duo back to the jungle with classic mechanics including the rather tricky but fun mine-cart segments, barrel blasting and funky co-operative play with Diddy Kong.

Yes! "K" "O" "N" "G" is back! It's awesome how they're putting the small, but important, game conventions in DKC. The mine level looks nostalgic as well. I hope Retro uses the foreground and background with these levels (not just barrels, but the cart itself goes back and forth). That would be really fresh and innovative.

Looks like Retro know how to bring back a franchise in the proper fashion while including updated mechanics. As long as the music and atmosphere are as good as the SNES games.

It does look good, but from what I've seen, it doesn't have the same atmosphere as the original games. It reminds me more of Jungle Beat and DK64, which are two of my least favourite Donkey Kong games.

I don't want to sound too critical though. This does look far better than NSMB Wii and the environments look lush and detailed. I love some of the gameplay aspects I've seen so far, like the jumping between foreground and backgrounds on levels.

I will miss the Kremlings though, I think will be one of the key things missing that make it feel like a DKC game, in my opinion. I can only hope the music will be high quality, like the original games.

Please let this be Rambi on the box art (surely it has to be?). Then there's a chance animal friends will be back.

It looks great, but I still think its a big waste of Retro's talents.

It reminds me more of Jungle Beat

Jungle Beat was fantastic.
Some of the most imaginative level designs of any game.

Kinda sucks without the drums though.

The drums are what made it so bad, for me.

What!? It was so intuitive, and bashing those bongos to pummel a boss or scoff down a load of bananas was awesome. (Wasn't there a remake of Jungle Beat without the bongos for the Wii?) Anyway, I suppose that's a bit off-topic.
I'd actually prefer a Jungle Beat sequel, but this looks okay. I hope there's a bit more to it than just timing your jumps!

I adored the everliving crap out of Jungle Beat. I've never actually been a huge DK fan, but the amazing score based, almost puzzling aspect of Jungle Beat made it so that it was easily my favourite DK game.

Plus the graphics were just breathtaking.

Have to say i hated jungle beag aswell, the bongos made me feel like a complete retard more so than any motion controller game has lol.
Plus it was kind of short and i wasn't into getting hi score.

Everyone has failed to mention the horrific controls. It was basically unplayable for me.

I don't understand how anyone could like to control a platform game with some bongos (a musical instrument) over the precision of a controller (designed for videogames). Plus, hitting those bongos continuously only made my hands hurt and become red.

Noone's failing to mention them, because that control scheme is actually acclaimed among many critics and fans. The bongos are soft, and the game just wouldn't play the same with traditional controls. The bongos were fully integrated into the gameplay, they helped with the scoring.

I can understand how you may not like it, but so many people adoring the game can't be wrong. It was so fresh, so unique, it was one of those final GC games that made people think "wow, Nintendo still have a lot of ideas".

It's just my opinion then.

Jungle Beat with the bongos was great. Incidentally, you were able to play it with a GameCube pad even on the original, but that control scheme was nowhere near as good. Shame it didn't sell too well - never played a DKC, but by all accounts it was style over substance, which could not be said of Jungle Beat.

Eh? DKC was not style over substance, it was a really good platform.

With Jungle Beat they sabotaged the GC controles just to force you to play with a crappy peice of plastic they where desperate to sell.

I didn't think the controls were too bad, though they could be a bit awkward at times. And me and my brother did have to keep taking it in turns to play a level, just to give our hands a rest. Smilie

Yes, yes, yes and more YES! Can't wait to play this.

Like video game music?!
