Send your SD Card for Metroid: Other M Glitch Fix on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Nintendo has warned owners of Metroid: Other M of a glitch within the game that keeps a door locked. The fix? Send in your SD card.

Kotaku report that owners of the game might be experiencing an error in sector 3 where a door remains red and locked. In order to fix the issue if you've already saved, you'll need to copy it onto an SD card and send it in the mail for Nintendo to fix.

In the room after the large lava area in Sector 3, battle the Space Pirates to unlock the Ice Beam.

Proceed to the second room ahead.

Defeat the enemies with spiked, purple legs to unlock the door at the end of the room.

To create the issue: Do not go through this door and instead backtrack to the room where the Ice Beam was obtained. Continuing to play from here creates the issue.

To avoid the issue: Proceed through the door that was just unlocked at the end of the room before doing any backtracking to any previous rooms.

There are probably like 3 people that this affects. It would be more cost effective for those affected to send in their saves, instead of patching. That, and I don't think the Wii allows patching.

Yes.
If there are several glitches like this, they should make a downloadable patch. Nintendo need to keep up on that, compared to other platforms.

I have, however, not seen any glitches. Lucky?

I genuinely wonder why Nintendo are so scared to patch things? Can the Wii just not handle it?

Surely Nintendo could update the Wii's firmware to allow for patches. Nintendo are supposed to be moneywise, yet here they are throwing it down the drain for the sake of tradition.

Wii games aren't installed and patching on the fly is impossible. Theres no way to change the executable file on the disk at all.

The only way it could be done would be to effectively issue a complete new executable file ver Wiiware or something, which then used files from Other-M disc.
Not impossible, but certainly very awkward.

For the record though, I'm 100% behind the way the Wii operates as it allows almost all its processing power to be used for the games and thus get more bang for the buck. The Xbox and PS3 both have reversed cycles/cores for system functions.
You also don't need to install a game on the Wii, thus most load a lot quicker.
The downside is patching becomes very very hard, and thus games should be checked very completely before release.

Typical Nintendo nonsense at work here, people. Such a caveman method of getting a fix. Heck even in the stoneage it would probably be quicker. Get a terradactyl to fly over your game saves!

This situation is purely the result of Nintendo's policy on patches.

Those systems can multitask, the Wii can not.
When you run a Wii game, it uses 100% of the cpu...none is reserved. Theres no way to dynamically add code in. It has to be first on the flash memory.

So, as I said, the -only- way to do it on the Wii is a complete replacement exe file, booted from the flash memory, and referencing the disk merely as a resource.

(and actually, yes, many PS3 and Xbox games are installed, they make use of the hard drive both as a cache and decompression space, its just done without you noticing.
Most patching would be done on the hard drives I think, rather then in ram on execution, but I haven't looked at the official method so I admit that part is a guess..in either case, neither method is suitable for the wii hardware)

How about making a Wii channel that fixes your save instead of mailing an SD card? This channel can be removed after the fix, as to not fill up the wii's limited memory.
