Move Moving Wii Players onto PS3? on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

With Sony's PlayStation Move out now in stores, EA's Jens Uwe feels that the primary Wii audience may move onto PS3.

When quizzed by MCV on whether the new controller from Sony can "convert" the casual Wii audience, he praised Nintendo's efforts into introducing new types of players and feels that the Move and Microsoft's Kinect will lure these new players into a "deeper experience".

We also always hoped those people would later buy a next gen gaming machine that does stuff the Wii doesn’t do as well as the others and we can certainly expect that the combination of reducing the entry barrier of the price and making the PS3 and 360 more accessible via Move or Kinect, we will certainly get people who now enjoy playing video games and want to play online or enjoy games in a much high resolution. We do expect quite a few people to do this.

Whilst many traditional gamers own more than one console or play games on various different formats, there are a strong chunk of players who are used to the Wii's format, style of motion-driven play and would only stick that setup.

With the new motion tech out for Nintendo's high-defition brothers, do you think these folk will include the Xbox 360 or PS3 alongside the Wii?

I can't really see it happening for the casuals to be "converted". Really don't like that word, urgh.

The main selling point for Wii is the price, the fact - for certain types of player - you get it all in the box for £X would sound more appealing than having to buy a console and the extra controllers/Kinect hardware.

In the last year or so, there's also the incentive to bundle on Wii Sports Resort and MotionPlus in the box.

I can certainly imagine those types of players being impressed, particularly by Move as at a glance it's similar style of controller to the Wii. It should allow players to get into these games pretty easily.

But I still don't think the visual gloss would be enough to draw those occasional Wii players in.

Though that said the incentive of a BluRay player and the various other neat media functionality may be that added push, but I don't think these people that are being described (imo) as potential "converts" are the sort to dash into a store to spend so much on another console they'd play occasionally.

if the ps3 wanted more players they already know what to do: cut out all the unnecessary junk and put in a processor to handle back system games.

still i doubt the ps3 or xbox will come up with anything truly "unique" to outclass the wii anyways.
meh mine as well wait and see what happens.

i have tried the PS Move and I have to say it feels very smooth and really great. the controller by far is more advance than the wii and what bothers me with the wii is that it is taking them this long to make a controller that includes motion plus.

Sony already has motion plus included.

May not convert the casual fans that nintendo has whored to themselves, but is definitely as enjoyable.

Mario, Mega Man and Rayman FTW!!!

OMG Obviously the Wii owners will move onto PS3?! The graphics, sound, all the internet stuff is much better than on the Wii and with Move there is no reason now to get the Wii. He is so right Smilie

Isn't the Wii an absolute rip-off for what it is, though? Wouldn't be surprised to see MS/Sony offering 'motion console bundles' for a similar price to Wii. Value-wise, Wii really isn't all that hot. There's less than the price of a game in difference. Then of course Wii motion plus is an extra.

I'm not saying Wii-users will make the jump. I don't pretend to know what millions of people want. I do think new customers taking a dive into current gen will have little reason to choose Wii unless they're well into Mario etc. It has GameCube 1.5 graphics (at most), doesn't look that nice on HD televisions, and costs you nearly as much as the others, and even they are starting to look old hat.

If anything 'saves' Nintendo in this regard, it's that it's probably too little too late for this gen. Nobody really gives a fuck about Milo or whatever motion crap is on PS3. I own both consoles, and haven't felt the urge to learn much about either manufacturer's motion solutions. You don't hear people talking about it online. Nobody seems to care. At least from my experience.

If he thinks that the type of audience they are trying to "convert" cares about superior tech or HD graphics he's dreaming.

Let's talk again after holidays.

And what will these developers do with innovative gameplay abilities?

Let me guess: make chunky ps3 signature controls. Ah, let's move... not...

I have a PS3 three and to be honest I don't see the point in forking out for move. Yes some games will be converted to play with it and I think Resi 5 would be much better for it, but at the moment I'm just not exited by it. I think the biggest flaws at the moment are that it's not bundled and it's not the main way of controlling you PS3 and most people when asked, I think would just say they'll stick with the normal controller.

I think it's inevitable PS3 will start outselling Wii anyway, with or without move. It's much more poweful and will end up as cheap, if not cheaper than Wii eventually. I think the PS3 has got a longer life in it because of it's massive graphical jump over Wii.

I think it's up to Nintendo to keep innovating all the time to keep ahead, and Nintendo know that. We know they are constantly trying new things out behind the scenes and they may just come out with some new innovation that puts Xbox and PS3 in the shade once again (sales wise).

I think of myself as a hardcore ps3 player. Always loved gadgets and still do. I bought move on the first day just for laugh. Me and my wife tried it out with a lot of scepticism. But have to say: IT IS GOOD! We owned Wii for approx 3months then i gave it away for charity (something for children). Xbox is sold due to noise and bad video quality and lack of DTS HD sound. PS3 is with us since the release date and it is absolute king of the consoles. MOVE is fantastic kit if you got some spare cash, if not then most likely you are one of those haters Smilie
There is no way to compare it with Wii, Wii is for preschool kids and for people who dont really know what else is there. COME ON! Just have a look on Mario - it is awful and looks like someone forgot him from the 80ies.
At this stage i could even imagine that MOVE might substitute old controller for good. Black Ops with move and navigator would be awesome! Precision is incredible trust me. We just need to wait a bit when more games are out, but this is deffo 1000 times better than Wii!!!!!!!!!!

Not really. The pointer functionality of Move seems well used, but the the motion controll stuff seems as poor as Wii's early stuff.
The technology is fine, its just developers are really slow to get it right.

Hopefully with Sony and Nintendo effectively with the same controllers now, games on both platforms will get better.

I find it funny how Sony trashed the idea of motion controls 4 years ago only to now try and play catch up. Still, the PS3 is fantastic value now for what you get. Will be picking one up for myself sometime in the near future.

Back at release, the Wii's price was much more appealing than the competitions (even if the Wii is a rip-off for the tech you're getting).

Plus, it's common to see Wiis selling brand new for £130 now and that's with the Wii Sports Resort with motion plus bundle which ain't too bad now.

The big difference between the two is, the Wiimote is the standard controller for the system, and Wiimote support is the standard control method for all retail games released. Some don't use it, but these are very few.

In contrast, only a few games will use the Move, developers given the choice may well opt for traditional control methods, and if Sony start shoving it down their throats they'll lose good favour with a few devs for sure.

Then there's the advertising. As annoying as it may be, the Wii is advertised brilliantly. The Move just isn't. The Move is also a huge additional cost to the already pricey PS3.

Basically I'm saying I'll be surprised if it managed to fully emulate the Wii's success. There's no doubt it will attract some of the audience it's after, Sony aren't complete idiots, but I don't think you can assume the Wii's demise either.

I don't know, it's too hard to say. Like someone said, earlier, that Sony and MS did Motion controller too late, in this gen. and; that people who own a wii, isn't really someone, to run to the store and just buy a new system, just for the motion sensing. well if they would've released their consoles, as motion sensing, at the get go. Nintendo, might not even be around, today (like how sega pulled out, last year because of poor sells for two or three generations, in a row.)

Nintendo has to really think about cutting the prices, of the wii, again if it needs to be done. Because they have to remain competitive, and not depend on what they have, especially if the other two, might be better.

There's no denying that the PS3 games look better than the Wii games. Even the Move wand looks sleeker. But where are the games?

The options are:
1) Wii with lots of games, many decent and not just family/party genre.

- or -

2) PS3 with only some gloosy motion control games. Easy choice, I think.

I already have 5 people who got the move last week, one was my aunt (age 40 something) and uncle, my dad got one to play with my step brothers and some mates of mine who used to be Wii owners. It's starting already

Looks to me as if Cubed3 is getting hits from Sony's viral marketing teams, some of the posts on here tow the Sony party line almost word for word, it's uncanny, "Wii is for kids" "Mario is stuck in the 80's". What? Of course the move cotroller is going to be technically superior to the Wii wand, it's new tech. Here's a new bombshell for you - the next gen consoles will be technically superior to the ones we have now, so I guess everything made before the future is redundant right?

The Move is actually incredibly similar to the Wiimote internally.
The advantage is it can track position when not facing the screen, thanks to its ball-and-camera. But in terms of pointer functionality it isn't more accurate, and its highly unlikely the gyro's are more accurate either. (there isn't that much choice in gyro technology at that size/cost).

The big question in terms how "better" is move to me is if the eye/camera can auto-calibrate the gyroscopes, as thats the main weak-point with motionplus.

Time to redress the balance of these faux-pas 'guests'.

PS3 IS RUBBISH. My Mega Drive has better graphics and motion controls than PS3, and it doesn't even have any graphics or motion controls. It can also play Blu-rays in higher quality than PS3, even though it can't play Blu-rays at all.

Not a chance on either Move or Kinect for me.

I am just the casual/family/grandpa(at 42!)/insert pidgeon-holing category moniker here/etc. that bought a Wii for what it was and still enjoy playing it now three years later (by myself and with my kids).

No interest in shelling out ANY money on complete consoles to get slightly improved systems that have nothing that I want to go out and buy to play.

I would rather have a new experience and I will wait for that with a 3DS.

Look unto me in every thought. Doubt not. Fear not.

I already have a Wii. I don't want another one, no matter how smooth the controls are and no matter how sleek the graphics are unless it's made by a company that already has REAL games for it.

It requires great courage to look at oneself honestly, and forge one's own path.

I already have a Wii and motion controls haven't convinced me they are the way to go forward in gaming, so I'm not interested in Move at all.

Nope, this is not going to happen. Will I get Move? Sure, I'll eventually get it once more games are out there that appeal to me but current Wii owners won't buy a PS3 and Move and forget about the Wii.

Is Move better than a Wiimote? Well, that a Wiimote by itself I'd say yes but it's almost the same as a Wiimote with WM+. And the fact that Move is at least an $80 investment (Camera and Move controller) versus a $10-20 investment on WM+ means Move better be an improvement tech-wise.

Right now over 120 Wiimotes are in the hands of consumers and WM+ must be attached to at least 10% of those which means WM+ is at 12 million (or more) while Move is at 200k. Which one has a bigger chance of getting support? And now Nintendo has announced the new Wiimote+ with FlingSmash (which I'll get) and it will probably be included with Zelda as well.

An extra controller released way after launch will never get a shot against a controller that is the standard and that is included with every console purchase and that is the battle Move and Kinect can't win.

@Martin: Right now if you want motion controls with your console you can buy a Wii for $199 and get two games, a Wiimote, a Nunchuck and WM+. A similar setup runs you $400 on PS3 and $300 on 360 but the first one is twice as much and only has one game and the second one doesn't have a HDD (which is another $130) but now finally has a built-in Wi-Fi receiver.

If someone hasn't bougt a PS3 or a 360 by now, Move isn't going to change their mind.

Agreed. Motion control needs a harmony with conventional controls for me to accept it as an evolution. Having one or the other doesn't do much for me. Remote shaped controllers can't really be used for traditional gaming like a standard pad can, so I have a choice to go with, rather than one controller that does it all.

Although the industry is definitely making a killing out of it.
