Zelda: Link's Awakening, Super Mario Land due for 3DS Treatment

By Jorge Ba-oh 29.09.2010 22

Zelda: Link

Within the 3DS launch date and price excitement came news of a new Virtual Console service allowing past Game Boy games in 3D.

"Where are the downloadable Game Boygames?" many of you have asked in the past. Well, the much loved original portable adventures are back, and this time they'll be playable in 3D (you can imagine this being said a Reggie-esque voice).

Nintendo confirmed the new "Virtual Console 3D" service as part of the launch plans for the console earlier today, allowing classic Game Boy games to be downloaded and available in 3D.

Two announced games include The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX and Super Mario Land, both available in 3D and restorable to their original look via the slider.

LINK'S AWAKENING IN 3D?!? OMG!

Does this mean higher res textures or wut? I don't see how these games would work in 3D tbh.

Awesome, awesome news. Link's Awakening was always one of my favourite Zelda games, infact my first actually. Great story and awesome non-Hyrule setup. Definitely can't wait to see how they pull this off, will be interesting to see how the old 2D graphics translate into 3D.

O wow, that's epic. I loved that zelda game. I still have it, too. it will be amazing to see it in 3d.

Actually, doing these ones in 3D would probably be pretty simple. Just a little bit of rendering things at a slightly different angle, or they could even take a layers-based approach.

So Kind of, like pokemon ruby, and saphires (3d attempt) but from the gameboy classics time?

Makes sense. I would like to see some higher resolution textures, though. Classic games with updated sprites and 3D graphics = Thumbs up

Hold on, are they retaining the 2D graphics and adding a 3D perspective or are they updating the graphics to 3D also?

I doubt they're completely overhauling every game. It's probably just going to be a minor adjustment, like with Wii VC giving games higher resolution or framerate.

Two of my most beloved GB games Smilie

3DS Code 2578-3122-0744

Link's Awakening is the only main Zelda title I've haven't played. Finally. Smilie

Super Mario Land revamped into 3D sounds great, I did think that the graphics were really good for a GB game, oh man this is awesome news. I have not managed to complete Links Awakening because it is so damn difficult to play. It is one of the more difficult 2D Zelda games in the series.

I suspect it will be all layers-based. Games with existing parallax effects would work, not sure of others will look much better though.

I would like to see some textured post-processing though. As these games are at...what 160x140 resolution? Thats tiny.
Rather then just stretching, a Pixel-resize with a texture could look quite nice.

I can't wait to see what they're going to do with the classic games.

Link's Awakening was the hardest Zelda game I played, and it wasn't even the DX version with the color dungeon.

The games aren't going to be remade whatsoever. No new textures/sprites. Things are just going to kinda pop out a little. Characters/monsters/objects.

Wow, this is great! I've never gotten the chance to play old game boy games, and now, like the virtual console for the Wii, I can.

This is EPICLY EPIC NEWS OF EPIC-NESS!! And it's about damn time. Smilie

Although, in the back of my mind I can't help but think Ninty's going to do the same thing they've done with Wii's VC service. Which was one of the most brilliant ideas in gaming ever, but it's been stifled by releasing only a trickle of the awesome classic gems gamers have been clamoring for. I don't know what the hell's going on, but now we're lucky if we get ONE VC title per week. There are still so many awesome games they could be releasing... *sigh* Oh, Nintendo... what. The. Hell?!

Screw Virtual Game Boy, I want me some 3DS!

This article completely misunderstood Nintendo. The Virtual Console will NOT have any games re-made in 3D. From the original press conference on September 29, the Virtual Console will have games for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. In addition, there will be a seperate service on the eShop for Classic Games, in 3D (either called "Classic Games" or "3D Classics"). These are seperate from the Virtual Console, for example, Xevious was remade in 3D, which was an arcade game release in 1982 by Namco. There will be no Super Mario Land in 3D, or Link's Awakening in 3D.
