So they haven't even looked at a 3DS yet? Urgh. 3DS is surely more capable, and original, than the old version of the iPhone?! Give it 5/6 months after the 3DS release and we'll see new headlines of Epic doing 3DS.

Every time I hear Mark Rein speak about Nintendo I can't help but wonder if he was somehow spurned by Nintendo in the past.

He freely admits he hasn't even seen the system, yet he's already declaring that Epic will never make games for it.

Also, it's not quoted here, but he also made a statement along the lines of "if Nintendo really wanted me involved, they would have called." Jilted lovers?

So, he hasn't even been able to assess it's specifications, yet he's already saying no, on grounds of it's technical limitations, what an idiotic thing to do. I guess Nintendo fans shouldn't expect any different from a company so far up Microsoft's arse. I recall one of their reps recently gushing about the possibility of Microsoft developing it's own handheld touch device, with Kinect integration.

Isn't this the same guy who was talking about future consoles being tablets and going into a bar with a portable XBOX 360(Kinect included) to play a round of Dance Central or Kinect Adventures? Yeah, there goes all of his credibility.

Rein has always been a jockey when it comes to Nintendo. Its good though, the 3DS does NOT need plastic looking, 4-hour long generic shooters.

Strange that a companies only requirement is the specs of a console. Its very much in line with those who write on other sites like IGN and kotaku.

Those who have been criticising the 3DS say its not as powerful as current mobiles like the iphone. On that bases alone it is not worth purchasing.

I hate this obsession held by some; those who can look at screenshots of a game and dismiss it due to textures and bump mapping and so on.

��£100 says the PSP 2 has graphics closer to the PS3, 2 analogue sticks, motion control, touch, cameras and possibly 3D tech.

They surely have mastered replicating nintendo and adding more gloss

PS I think his comments were mistakenly taken out of context. I dont think he meant they would not make a game for it, just that it hasnt got the minimum requirements to run their engine.

The 3DS is indeed most likely below the minimum specs for the Unreal Engine, but I imagine that Epic could easily modify it to run smoothly on the 3DS. Not that a PC developer would have much luck on a portable, though.

WOW!! Just downloaded EPIC Citadel to check out what Mark Rein is talking about and I'm amazed. It's so unbelievably detailed and beautiful (even when you walk up close to textures). BUT it's not a game. It's just a barren town with nothing happening in it. 3DS could probably do a demo like that, but once you start adding characters with animation and things like that the detail and scale would have to drop. So we obviously won't see anything as detailed as that in a propper full game for 3DS or iPhone for that matter. Although some of the games for 3DS, like Resident Evil aren't far behind and it is a full game.

I think the guy must either not have seen anything of RE or MGS, or be utterly blind.
The system is clearly FAR beyond the current gen iPhones in terms of graphics. The shaders, self-shadowing, motion-blur etc are no where to be seen on iPhone games. Its not even in the same league.

It would be more understandable if a specific iPhone feature he was talking about...like gps....or even if the cpu clockspeed was required due to AI or something (ie, not a graphics issue at all).

But this is just complete FUD.

Well to say the iphone cant do something because there are no examples on it is not a solid argument. THe mobile game industry model is different. Its about catchy gameplay not realistic graphics. The only market is ITunes so an expensive game lost in a sea of cheaply made ones is more risky on a mobile platform so tightly constrained.

But we can't say the 3DS can't do anything either by the same logic.
And we have seen plenty of screens and videos of things at this early stage of the 3DS that are leagues ahead of what we have seen on the iPhone (thus far).

I've seen some good graphics on the iPhone, but (at best) it seems to sit between the PS2 and Wii. Draw distances, polygons and texture res seems Wii like or better, but shaders seems to be just at PS2 level.

If the iPhone could do self-shadowing or more advanced lighting wouldn't we have seen it in some form by now? I appreciate these developers have vastly less investment due to the smaller scale of the games, but some of those things really don't take much effort at all.

I did find a few examples of normal-mapping on the iPhone, however. So thats possible at least.

This is one thing I REALLY hate about epic, they're selfcentered graphic whores. Seriously who denys deving for a system JUST BECAUSE it can't produce enough "Pretty Pixels".

Unreal 3 is perfectly capable of running on the Wii. It would just take some tweaking on Epic's part.

Obviously, they refuse to let Unreal Engine run on the Wii.

And it's pretty clear that the 3DS is at least as powerful as the Wii, and very likely more powerful than it.

This is quite obviously a case of simple bias. The fact that he claims what the 3DS can or can't do when he doesn't know the specs at all proves this.

It's a beautiful demo and shows what the iPhone can achieve. But I think 3DS can create graphics as nice as this, maybe not at the same resolution but just as nice.

I took thes pics from my 3GS so it'll look even better on iPhone4.

herp de derp, making an engine is so easy. I'm a Nintendo fanboy so I must know what I'm talking about. Derp. Porting it to the 3DS which has a completely architecture to a modern console/PC is totally worth their time and it's obviously so simple, it'd take 5 minutes. Durrrrrrrrrrrr. Some people like pretty games, but since I'm a Nintendo fanboy I think the only feature worth spending time on is gameplay because it's not like games are a visual entertainment medium. Derp de derp.

Honestly, why do these articles get posted? It's the same thing every fucking time. At the end of the day, Epic make stunning looking games for the people out there who sometimes actually just want to blow the living shit out of stuff and not much else.

I think most people here missed the point Mark Rein was saying. In fact only 1 person seemed to realise what he was specifically saying. Meeto who realised it falls below the minimum specs for Unreal and would require serious alterations to the engine to get it running which simply isn't worth it because that's not where their target audience lies. The rest of my post was just a rant/attack at the usual Nintendo fanboy attitude that wanting good looking games is some kind of sin. Funny isn't it, that before the Wii, Nintendo's games were always the best looking.
