Classic Mario Tops Pokemon B/W in Japan on Nintendo gaming news, videos and discussion

Pokemon is one of Nintendo's best selling franchises, and with Black/White out the pair were unstoppable in Japan. Until now!

The Super Mario Collection Special Pack, which includes a disc copy of the classic Super Mario All-Stars, a Mario booklet and soundtrack, was recently released over in Japan and has since knocked previous crown holder Pokemon Black and White off the top spot.

Up until 24th October the new monster-collecting duo had sold over four million copies in Japan alone. Yes, Japan alone - and in the last week adopted 81,915 new Japanese trainers.

With that in mind, this time round it still wasn't enough to keep first place. Super Mario Collection blitzed the charts, and retailers with over 307,000 units sold in just three days.

Super Mario All-Stars is out in Europe on December 3rd.

Wow - crazy number sold. I'm not too convinced on getting this really. Wasn't the biggest fan of classic Mario, and have played these over and over - but can see why Japan has gone crazy over this - wonder how it'll do over here?

Would do on a handheld if done differently though, like with the 3DS doing the whole 3D thing with GB games.

Anyone planning to get this outside Japan?

And SOME people thought Nintendo should have took the effort to include more games. Just goes to show that Nintendo still knows how to sell games (by taking 20 year old games and releasing them as-is).

Got the collection earlier this week, it's boss. I like the presentation of the History booklet.

I'm probably going to get it since I don't have those on the VC and the booklet really interests me. Still, they could have easily put all titles pre-N64 in there and sell it for more. Wonder why they didn't?

Oh and I think it will sell pretty well over here too. I just looked on amazon and it's already in the top-selling Wii games which means lots of pre-orders.

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition is coming to North America in December!

And Nintendo has yet to announce the game for release over here. It would easily sell 1 million in the Americas alone.

@jb: I'll buy this release not only for the games (which I already own in original cartridge on the NES and SNES) but for the included booklet, soundtrack and packaging.

Ok, the collection was just announced for release in the Americas for only $29.99! Pre-ordering the game just as I submit this message...
